Instructions Test period Tools The test

115 minutes. We recommend that you reserve about 30 minutes to work with item 8. Calculator, formula sheet and ruler. The test includes 8 items. For most items a single answer is not enough. It is also expected that you write down what you do that you explain/motivate your reasoning that you draw any necessary illustrations. Item number 8 is a larger item that demands a longer time to solve than other items. It is important that you make a try to solve this item. Above the item is written what the teacher has to consider at the assessment.

WARNING: This is just a minimum requirement test for passing. The test gives totally at the most 36 points. To get the test character Pass you must have at least 18 points. If your goal is a higher grade, this test is an improper one. You should take the other test. Write your name on all sheets of paper you hand in.

1. For what range (s) of values of x is the following equation valid?

2 x 7 > 13 3 x

(2)

Suggested solution: Answer: x > 4

2 x 7 > 13 3 x [1p] 2 x + 3 x > 13 + 7 5 x > 20 x >

20 x > 4 [1p] 5

2. Solve the following equations: a. 16 x 2 9 = 0 b. (2) (2) (3)

(3x 2)(2 x + 11) = 0

c. x 2 + 6 x + 9 = 0

3 x = 4 Suggested solution: Answer: (a) ; (b) x = 3 4

2 x = 3 ; (c) x = 3 ; (d) x = 11 2

4 x 3 = 0 4 x = 3 a. 16 x 2 9 = 0 (4 x 3)(4 x + 3) = 0 [1p] 4 x + 3 = 0 4 x = 3 2 x = 3 [1p] 11 x = 2

3 x = 4 [1p] x = 3 4

3x 2 = 0 b. (3 x 2 )(2 x + 11) = 0 [1p] 2 x + 11 = 0

c. x 2 + 6 x + 9 = 0 [1p]

(x + 3)2 = 0

[1p] x + 3 = 0 x = 3 [1p] (3)

3. Find the smallest angle of the triangle.

Suggested solution: Answer: Smallest angle of the triangle is: 5x = 35

7 x + 5 x = 84

[1p]

12x = 84 x =

84 = 7 12

[1p] 5x = 5 7 = 35

4. Calculate the side x if the line inside the triangle is drawn parallel to the base of the triangle. (3)

Suggested solution: Answer: x 15 mm Due to the fact that the line inside is parallel to the base, the triangle inside the bigger one is similar to the original (larger) triangle, and therefore, the similar sides are proportional:

x 13 = 9.0 + x 21 21x = 13(9.0 + x ) 21x = 117 + 13 x 8 x = 117

x = 14.63 mm x 15 mm

5. Find the angles x and y . (3) Suggested solution: Answer: x = 96 , y = 42 The central angle, x and the angle 48 share the same arc, therefore:
x = 2 48 = 96 x = 96

[1p]

On the other hand the triangle whose two angles are x and y , is isosceles. Therefore

2 y + x = 180 2 y = 180 x y = y = 42

180 x x y = 90 y = 90 48 2 2 2

6. Solve the following simultaneous equation:

3x 5 y = 9 x + y = 2
Suggested solution: Answer: x = 2.38 , y = 0.38

(3)

We may solve the problem by the elimination method To eliminate the variable y , we may multiply both sides of the second equation by 5, and then adding both equations together:

7. Find the distance between the points (2, 1) and (5, 7 ) . What is the coordinates of the midpoint of the line? (3) Suggested solution. Answer: AB = 73 = 8.54 Lets call the first point A: (2, 1) , i.e. ( x A = 2, y A = 1) and the second one B: (5, 7 ) , i.e.: ( x B = 5, y B = 7 ) . [1p]. The length of AB may be found as: AB =

(x A xB )2 + ( y A y B )2
[1p]

AB =

(5 2)2 + ( 1 7 )2

AB = 32 + 8 2 = 73 = 8.54 8. The functions f ( x ) is defined as

The intersection of g ( x ) = 7 2 x

and f ( x ) = 5 x 3 is (1.43, 4.14 ) :

f ( x) = g ( x ) 5 x 3 = 7 2 x 5 x + 2 x = 7 + 3 7 x = 10 x =

10 = 1.43 7

[1p]

50 21 29 10 10 = = 4.14 f (1.43) = 4.14 = g (1.43) . f = 5 3 = 7 7 7 7

The intersection of g ( x ) = 7 2 x and f ( x ) = 5 x 3 is (1.43, 4.14 ) : [1p] f. The lines perpendicular to g ( x ) = 7 2 x , all have identical slope of 1 1 = 0.5 . k = = 2 k||

[2p]

Therefore, they all have the equations of the form: h( x ) = 0.5 x + m . The equation of the line passing through the origin is h( x ) = 0.5 x . [1p]
