Admissions Process


The KSE General Admission Test and interviews will be held in Kyiv on 1uly 2-4, 2012.

The Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) strives to attract qualified participants from all regions in Ukraine, Belarus and
Moldova, and selects participants on the basis of merit and in the spirit of open competition.

Admission to the KSE is based on merit and is open to any citizen oI Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova who meets the
basic eligibility requirements:

O Completed specialist`s or bachelor`s degree
O ProIiciency in English
O Strong mathematical skills
O Submission oI required documents Ior admission by the speciIied deadline

A prior specialization in economics is not essential.

Selection Ior admission is based on a review oI the application materials, results oI the KSE General Admission Test,
and an interview, which is conducted by English-speaking proIessional economists.


Deadline and Required Documents

Kyiv School oI Economics has a single deadline Ior the submission oI the application materials. All required
documents should be submitted in person or sent by postal mail to the KSE Admissions OIIice, in one package, by the
Iollowing deadline:

All documents can be mailed or submitted to the KSE Admissions OIIice in person. II documents are mailed, please
be sure to submit all documents in one envelope and conIirm the receipt oI the package with the KSE Admissions
OIIice by phone/ e-mail. This will ensure that all materials will arrive to the KSE Admissions OIIice by the speciIied
postmark deadline oI 1une 25, 2012. Please be sure that your name appears on all Iorms submitted. II some oI your
documents are submitted under any other name, be sure to indicate this by attaching an adequate certiIied document
(e.g., marriage certiIicate).

Students are encouraged to apply Ior admission to the Kyiv School oI Economics beginning March 2012. Early
applications are welcome.

1. Application Form
The Application Form lists general personal inIormation, educational background, proIessional experience, knowledge
oI English language and is included to the interviewers` package as the main inIormation about the applicant.
Although applicants may submit a resume, they should not complete any section oI the application by reIerring the
Admissions Committee to an enclosed resume or vitae or to other parts oI the application.

The Application Form may be obtained directly Irom the KSE Admissions OIIice or by mail, iI requested. The
Application Form plus additional inIormation can also be obtained through the Internet at
http://www.kse.org.ua/admissions/.


2. Registration Form

The Registration Form serves the purpose oI initial registration and includes personal data oI each applicant. It is to be
completed by all applicants. The Registration Form may be obtained directly Irom the KSE Admissions OIIice or by
mail, iI requested. It can also be obtained through the Internet at http://www.kse.org.ua/admissions/.

3. Statement oI Purpose
One oI the most important parts oI the application Iorm is the 250-word statement oI purpose on why you wish to
study economics and how a master's degree in economics is related to your career goals and intellectual interests. The
statement oI purpose should be typed, double-spaced on a separate sheet oI paper, in English. It should include the
purpose oI your scientiIic and proIessional interests and objectives, and a description oI your goals, and how the
master`s program can help you meet them. II you are primarily interested in research, also include a description oI the
research that you wish to pursue and report, iI applicable, your research in progress. In general, a good statement oI
purpose should include answers to the Iollowing questions:

O How your personal background, interests, and experience will help you to study in the program?
O What have you already done, at any level, in the Iield oI economics or Iinance?
O How does the master`s program Iit into your short-term and long-term career goals?
The statement oI purpose should be entirely the applicant`s original work. It must be also written in English and NOT
in another language, as well as not translated Ior the applicant by another person.

4. Recommendation Letters


Recommendation letters should be provided by three individuals, such as university instructors or employers (that is,
Irom people who have supervised you in either an academic, proIessional, or community service capacity, and who
can comment on your intellectual ability, creativity, initiative, sensitivity to others, and leadership potential).

Recommendations should not be written by Iriends or Iamily members. When Ieasible, at least one should be Irom a
university proIessor Iamiliar with your academic work.

Recommendation letters written in Ukrainian or Russian must be translated into English, and translations must be
notarized. CertiIied English translation is required. Letters oI recommendation should include the name, title, address,
and telephone number oI the person providing the recommendation and should be signed and oIIicially stamped.
Unstamped or unsigned recommendations without certiIied translation are not accepted Ior consideration. All
recommendation letters should be provided to the student by the recommenders in the sealed and signed envelopes and
in such Iormat submitted to the KSE Admissions OIIice.

6. 3 photos 3 cm x 4 cm

Photos can be either color or white & black, but should meet the requested size parameters (3cm x 4cm).

7. Medical CertiIicate ]-086/ Iorm

All applicants are requested to submit an original medical certiIicate corresponding to the Iorm ]-086/. Though the
title oI this Iorm may diIIer Irom country to country, the content is the same. Such certiIicate is issued to a person Ior
the purpose oI admission to the educational institutions and lists examination statements by major doctors (therapist,
oculist, neuropathologist and others).

II medical certiIicate is issued in the native language, its English translation should be submitted as well (regards
international students only).

8. Passport

A copy oI the passport should be submitted to the KSE Admissions OIIice together with other application materials by
June 25, 2012. The original passport should be presented at the beginning oI the KSE General Admission Test and the
Interview, Ior personal identiIication.

9. IdentiIication tax number

A copy oI the identiIication tax number should be submitted by Ukrainian applicants only.

The criteria Ior admission include meeting a minimum score on the KSE General Admission Test which consists oI
three parts - mathematics, economics and English. An overall score, including interview results, will be assigned to
each applicant who has been admitted to the interview.

Maximum number oI points an applicant can receive is 100, among which:

KSE General Admission Test 70 points

Out oI which:

Economics Part 30 points
Mathematics Part 30 points
English Language Part 10 points

Interview 30 points


The Economics Part is designed to measure the applicant`s ability to:

O understand basic concepts in economics;
O interpret simple economic graphs; and
O apply basic economic reasoning to everyday issues.

Previous specialization in economics is not required Ior admission to the KSE.

The best way to prepare for the Mathematics Part is to take any textbook "Mathematics for Economists" approved by
the Ministry of Education, learn the theory within and solve as many problems, as possible. The list of suggested

The English Part measures the command oI English grammar and vocabulary at the intermediate level. Includes tasks
on reading comprehension, language structure, editing and Iilling in the gaps.

Interview

Based on the results oI the preceding KSE General Admission Test, applicants may be invited to an interview in
English with two proIessional economists. The interviewers will ask questions about the applicant`s educational and
proIessional background, academic and career goals, English-language proIiciency, as well as about the applicant`s
Iamiliarization with the KSE curriculum. The interview may also include a discussion oI the candidate`s application
documents.

Two tips Ior the preparation oI the interview:

1. Know KSE MA Programs and the curriculum: know what courses are taught in the Iirst and the second years oI
study (both the names oI the courses and their contents are given on the KSE website). Some students only discover at
the admission interview that the economics that is taught at the KSE is quite diIIerent Irom the economics taught at the
majority oI undergraduate institutions in Ukraine.

2. Know what is happening around you: read newspaper/listen to news on the radio or watch TV news. It is important
that the applicant is aware about the economic/political situation in his/her country and the world.

Mathematics Preparatory Sessions

There are three Preparatory Sessions in Mathematics available online at the KSE website in the Preparatory Sessions
section: http://kse.org.ua/admissions/prepcources.htm. Each session is devoted to a speciIic topic and prepares
applicants to the Mathematics Part oI the KSE General Admission Test:

Six to three weeks beIore admissions, Kyiv School oI Economics will organize a One-Day KSE General Admission
Test Preparatory Session at which applicants will be able to meet with the KSE proIessors conducting the Test, get
more detailed inIormation on its Iormat, structure, preparation guidelines, ask questions, as well as take a brieI trial
test in each oI the 3 parts (Mathematics, Economics and English) getting the solutions at the end. To register Ior the

Q: When can I apply?

Q: Who can write the letter of recommendation?
A: Letters oI recommendation should be written by the university proIessor or an employer, that is people who have

Q: What should I do if by the time of admissions I will not have my diploma technically issued yet?
A: KSE doesn`t require the submission oI the original diploma by the time oI admissions. The original diploma and its
attachment, or notarized copies oI both documents will be requested only Irom admitted students and should be
submitted to the KSE Admissions OIIice, as a prerequisite Ior Iinal enrollment no later than August 13, 2012.

Q: If I am not a resident of Kyiv where can I stay during admissions?
A: Applicants are responsible Ior their own accommodation during admissions.

Q: How can I prepare myself better for the KSE General Admission Test?
A: In order to aid its applicants in preparation to the KSE General Admission Test, KSE has developed a series oI
preparation guidelines. Firstly, applicants are greatly encouraged to use the guidelines and recommended literature
included in the Admission Brochure that gives a brieI overview oI the Test contents, as well as suggests sources Ior
preparation. The majority oI recommended literature is available at the KSE Library that is open to applicants Iree oI
charge. Secondly, KSE has placed a sample oI the KSE General Admission Test at its website at:
http://kse.org.ua/uploads/Iile/KSEGeneralAdmissionTest.doc. Sample is easily accessible and represents the most
typical Iormat and questions. Lastly, all applicants are invited to the regular KSE Open Houses and a One-Day KSE
General Admission Test Preparatory Session six to three weeks beIore the admissions.

Q: What should I expect from an interview? Do I need to specifically prepare myself?
A: During the interview, interviewers usually ask questions about the applicant`s educational and proIessional
background, academic and career goals, English-language proIiciency, as well as about applicant`s Iamiliarization
with the KSE curriculum. The interview may also include a discussion oI candidate`s application documents.
ThereIore, Ior preparation to an interview it is desirable that the applicant gets acquainted with the School, its mission,
content and course oIIerings. This can be easily done by searching the KSE`s website or attending one oI the KSE
Open House events. In the rest, the general rules, also appropriate to a regular job interview, should apply.

Q: Can I be admitted into the School without passing the KSE General Admission Test?
A: In order to be admitted into the School all applicants pass the KSE General Admission Test, as well as go through
the interview process. Admission without successIul completion oI the KSE General Admission Test is not permitted.
KSE enrolls only those students who are on the list oI admitted students. Students who were passing the KSE General
Admission Test and an interview, but are not on the list oI admitted students cannot be enrolled.

Tuition Fee, Financial Aid and Opportunities of Deferred Tuition and Housing


1uition Fee

The tuition Iee at the Kyiv School oI Economics is f3,000 per student per year.

The actual amount paid by a student may be smaller if he/ she receives additional scholarship/s or financial aid.

$ Financial Aid

For Ukrainian $tudents:

For the Iirst year oI studies (2012-13 academic year), KSE provides:

O 5 full scholarships covering the full Iirst-year tuition Iee oI the top 5 students based on the admissions
ranking

All students who receive full scholarships for the first year of studies should maintain B on average on their
cumulative GPA after miniterm II of the first academic year.

O 10 partial scholarships covering half oI the Iirst-year tuition Iee (t1,500) oI the students ranked Irom 6 to
15 on the admissions ranking.

All students who receive partial scholarships for the first year of studies should comply with existing performance
requirements.

For the second year oI studies (2013-14 academic year), KSE provides:

O 5 full Teaching and Research Assistantships covering the full second-year tuition Iee

Students who receive Teaching and Research Assistantships should perform the duties of a Teaching Assistant
(TA) or Research Assistant (RA) during their second year of studies. To be eligible for either Teaching or
Research Assistantship, a student should maintain required GPA and work as an assistant at the School.

O 10 partial scholarships covering the half oI the second-year tuition Iee (t1,500) oI 10 second-year students
based on their ranking at the end oI the Iirst year oI studies.

For the MA in Financial Economics. 3 partial scholarships

For the MA in Economic Analysis. 7 partial scholarships

All students who receive partial scholarships for the second year of studies should comply with the existing
performance requirements.

For International $tudents:

In the past years KSE provided Iull scholarships Ior both years oI study to students Irom Belarus and Moldova thanks
to the support Irom the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Norwegian
Government. The availability oI scholarships Ior the international students in 2012-13 academic year is conditional on
conIirmation oI the donor support. More inIormation on scholarships Ior international students can be Iound at the

(room 328).

Aeed-Based Deferral of Payments and Housing $upport

DeIerral oI tuition payments is a special kind oI Iinancial support that allows students to postpone payment oI the KSE
tuition.

Housing support comes in the Iorm oI a $100 monthly stipend (paid each month a student studies at the KSE) which
has to be paid back by the student according to the same rules that apply to deIerred tuition. These payments are paid
by the School to the students` bank USD account at the beginning oI each month. II no appropriate bank account
details are provided, the student loses his/her housing support until such inIormation is provided.

Students who want to be considered Ior the deIerred tuition and housing support shall Iill out and submit to the KSE
Academic AIIairs Department/ Admissions OIIice the Payment DeIerral and Housing Support Request within 3 days
after the admission results have been announced.

This Request Form shall be accompanied by:

(1) a letter oI request explaining the applicant`s need Ior the deIerral and/or housing support;
(2) inIormation regarding the applicant`s Iamily`s composition and Iinancial situation (Iamily members` oIIicial
earnings, assets, and so on)

An applicant shall present his/her application orally beIore the KSE Payment DeIerral and Housing Support
Committee, consisting oI not less than three KSE staII or Iaculty members. The committee makes decisions regarding
deIerral oI payments and/or housing support by a majority vote.

The School is under no obligation to give any student deIerral oI tuition or housing support.

Repayment oI deIerred payments and/or housing support shall start not later than 6 months after graduation.
Students that are on an academic leave that lasts more than one year shall start paying back their debt to the KSE not
later than one year aIter the beginning oI the academic leave. DeIerred tuition and housing support should be paid
back within a period that is no longer than 6 months plus the time the student received deIerral at the School

In case a student is given deIerred tuition and/or housing support, a separate contract outlining the terms and
conditions oI deIerred payments is signed between the student and the School. The Administrative Department
manages such contracts and Iollows up the cases oI non-timely payment.

II during the academic year the Iinancial situation oI a student changes Ior the worse, the student can apply Ior
deIerred tuition and/or housing support. II the School is convinced that the Iinancial situation oI a student changed Ior
the better, the School can revoke the deIerred housing support or the deIerral oI tuition.

Students cannot get the deIerral oI tuition or housing support twice Ior the same period oI studies. II a student repeats

Depending on the availability, KSE can also oIIer scholarships supported by speciIic companies or donations.

Some oI the Iull and partial scholarships oIIered by KSE are provided by its corporate sponsors. This is a special
honor to receive such scholarship, since a student is specially selected by a selection committee with the representative
oI the corporate sponsors, and is recognized as awardee oI a special scholarship named aIter the corporate sponsor.
The corporate scholarships can be provided instead or in addition to the regular Iull and partial scholarships, and the
number oI Iull scholarships oIIered to the students may exceed the number oI scholarships initially oIIered by the
School.

Awards and grants to $ students

Awards or grants are Iixed amounts oI money provided on a competitive basis to people satisIying the award`s or
grant`s requirements. The KSE manages competitions open to the general public, including KSE students (Ior
example, the EERC grants competition) and may also hold competitions that are open to KSE students only. Awards
and grants, depending on their conditions and stipulations, may be used Ior tuition payment, housing support, research
support (databases, etc.) or may be given in the Iorm oI a direct payment to the recipient. The KSE may also manage

awards or grants provided to KSE students by other institutions, iI the awards or grants are aimed at helping students
cover their tuition and housing expenses.

KSE awards and grants are assigned by the Award/Grant committee. The recipient has the right to reject the award/
grant. An award/grant may be revoked iI the recipient Iails to satisIy the award`s/grant`s requirements during the
award/grant period.

School`s alumni also collect donations and provide a special Alumni Scholarship to the most successIul student.

Some students have opportunity to work part-time at the School at the positions not related to the economic education
process. Such positions include Library and IT Assistants, as well the Assistants to the Development Department. Six
to eight positions a year usually open to the second-year students.

KSE also assists students in obtaining Iull or part-time internship positions during the summer, which could continue
during the second year oI study and lead to a Iull-time employment in the Iuture.

$ Donors' Contribution

The real cost oI providing education at the KSE is t10,000 a year, but Ukrainian students automatically receive a
scholarship in the amount oI t7,000 which is Iunded by the KSE donors.
