Casey Rogers, Specialist, 19th Century Furniture and Decorative Art, comments: Exceptional quality, rarity and provenance drew spirited bidding to the offerings in the 19th Century Decorative Arts category and we are extremely pleased with the enthusiastic response for the eclectic mix of furniture, sculpture and ceramics. Iconic American collections led Wednesdays morning session and an array of international clientele bid furiously for re-discovered masterworks from the Bernard Castro Collection, which far exceeded estimates and totaled $636,000. Leading this group was a rare 1851 micromosaic table by the celebrated mosaicist, Michelangelo Barberi, which achieved $290,500. Anne Igelbrink, Specialist of European Furniture & Works of Art, said: This sale underlined the unceasing demand for rare, top quality lots across all categories. Buyers from around the globe competed heatedly and paid top prices for European furniture from all periods. Early examples, such as the Charles II Pietra dura mounted cabinet-on-stand soared, realizing $182,500 and bidding was equally spirited for later furniture such as the pair of George III pier tables attributed to William Moore of Dublin, realizing $326,500 and an Empire mahogany side cabinet, realizing $122,500, both of which soared to over double their high estimates. Melissa Bennie, Head of European Ceramics and Glass, added: Lead by the Mintons pte-sur-pte masterworks by Louis Solon, the European ceramics saw active bidding from around the world with many of the top lots ultimately remaining in American collections. Highlights included a pair of massive Vienna style vases that realized $230,500 and strong results for Berlin porcelain in the form of tea wares and plaques. The group was complimented by a solid 100% sold result for the Meissen figure collection sold to benefit The Maridon Museum.
