Graphic design is considered to be under the field of Information design, which is defined as Designing and presenting visual information

that uses combinations of materials, methods and media to convey information with sketches, concepts and working drawings, and associated mock-ups. Description of the methods and sources used to establish communication need/s and to research and generate ideas. The methods used by graphic designers to establish communication need/s varies with each designer. With freelance graphic designers, they establish communication need/s by talking to primarily companies or sometimes even corporations that need a one-off design such as an advertisement, store signage or even a logo. With permanently employed graphic designers, they are given a particular communication need/s by the employer that the designer is to complete and therefore little to no effort is required for establishing the need/s. Some of the sources used to research and generate ideas, while again varying with each designer, are books, magazines and the internet, all of which may or may not include similar work from other designers. As well as this, graphic designers may also use brainstorming activities such as lotus diagrams and flow charts to research and generate ideas. Description of process followed to refine ideas and final presentation/s. The process that graphic designers generally follow while refining ideas and final presentation/s are, depending on what they are designing, completing checklists such as those used throughout advertising that are regulated by the ACCC or evaluating different aspects of the visual communication such as the overall effectiveness or intended audience that will determine how successful the communication is. Description of decisions made in the development and refinement of visual communications. Although it completely depends on the communication need, during the development and refinement of visual communications, graphic designers have to make certain decisions for the purpose of either improving the overall effectiveness of the communication or to fully adhere to and make the communication correct according to, the constraints and considerations put forth by the client. Description of reasons for decision made about the choice of materials, media, design elements and design principles throughout a production process. The possible reasons that there are decisions made about aspects of visual communication/s throughout a production process such as; The choice of materials are that in certain visual communications there may be constraints and considerations such as price, so the materials much be inexpensive, or environmental, so the materials much have a minimal environmental impact. Media are that the client has asked the graphic designer to use a particular medium or media to be the focus of the visual communication. Design elements are that the client or graphic designer has determined that a focus should be placed on particular element/s to improve the overall effectiveness or to improve a specific aspect of the communication piece.

Description of specialist roles in professional practice. In the field of graphic design specialists such as typographers, print makers and illustrators may be externally employed by the graphic designer to complete certain aspects of a particular visual communication that either the company that is employing the graphic designer or the graphic designer them self wants to be done by a specialist. Description of the interaction of specialist in the visual communication production process. During the production process of a visual communication, depending on what the visual communication is, there may be interaction between the graphic designer and specialists in particular fields. This interaction is used to develop the desired outcome that was developed during the establishment of the communication need/s which could be the design of a unique font that the graphic designer decided to interact with a specialist, in this case a typographer, to create the desired outcome.
