Concerning test material in general, the Swedish Board of Education refers to the Official Secrets Act ,the regulation about secrecy, 4th chapter 3rd paragraph. For this material, the secrecy is valid until the expiration of September 2000.

Instructions

Test period Test time Resources Test material

Weeks 4 22 1999. According to decision at the school (recommended time: 60 minutes). Graphic calculator and table of formulae. The material should be handed in together with your solutions. Write your name, the name of your education programme/adult education, and your date of birth on all the sheets you hand in.

The test

The test consists of two alternative problems of which you should choose one. The questions in the problem may be of such kind that you have to decide on the possible interpretations. You should present the assumptions which form the basis for your computations and conclusions. When presenting graphical solutions where a graphic calculator has been used, you should present your work according to the instructions and methods you and your teacher have agreed on. Even a partial solution may be a basis for the teachers evaluation of your work. A description of what the teacher may consider when evaluating your work is attached to each problem. If anything is unclear, ask your teacher.

Working methods

The responsible teacher will inform you about the working methods concerning the Open-Solutions part of the test.

1. POWER FUNCTIONS AND AREAS

The figure below shows the graph of a function y = x n , x 0 , where n is a real number greater than zero. From the point on the curve where the x-coordinate is c (c is a positive constant) lines are drawn parallel to the coordinate axes. Together with the coordinate axes and the graph, these lines bound two regions with areas A1 and A2.

1.

a)

Let n = 2 . Investigate the value of the ratio Formulate a conclusion.

A1 for some different values of c. A2

b) 2. a)

Show that your conclusion holds for all values of c when n = 2. Let c = 1. Investigate the value of the ratio Formulate a conclusion.

1 for some different values of n. 2

b) 3.

Show that your conclusion holds for all values of n when c = 1.

Now, let both c and n vary. Formulate a conclusion about the ratio your conclusion holds for all values of c and n.

1 and show that 2

When evaluating your work, the teacher will consider the following: how systematic you are in your investigation. how well you present your work and justify your results. how well you formulate your conclusions. how well you show that your conclusions are true in a general case.

2. TRIGONOMETRIC EQUATIONS
In this exercise, you are going to study trigonometric equations of the type a sin kx = b when 0 x 360 . The number of solutions of the equation depends on what values of a, k and b that are used. If, for example, a = 2, b = 1 and k = 2, we obtain the equation 2 sin 2 x = 1 . We can show, graphically or algebraically, that this equation has four solutions in the interval 0 x 360 . As a part of the explanation of a graphical solution of the equation 2 sin 2 x = 1 , a sketch of the display of the calculator may be included.

1.

a) b)

Describe how you, by using a graphic calculator, can decide the number of solutions of the equation 10 sin x = b when b = -5 ( 0 x 360 ). Find all values of b for which the equation 10 sin x = b has two solutions in the interval 0 x 360 .

2. 3.

Investigate how the number of solutions of the equation a sin x = 3 varies with the choice of the constant a ( 0 x 360 ). Investigate how the number of solutions of the equation a sin kx = 3 varies with the choice of the constants a and k, when k is a positive integer ( 0 x 360 ).

When evaluating your work the teacher will consider the following: how systematic you are in your investigations. how well you present your work. how well you justify your conclusions.
