Inference strategy Defuzzification Application Methodologies Course material for EEE411 will be delivered primarily in form of lectures. Students will be expected to read textbooks and make some of the notes to enhance research capabilities. Assignments (in form of written and oral presentation) will be used to reinforce the lecture material. Continuous assessment 3 assignments will be given throughout the semester. 2 tests will be given and each test will cover primarily material taken since last test. Final exam The exam will cover essentially the whole course material. Marking scheme Assignments Tests Final exam Total

COURSE OBJECTIVES To provide students with knowledge and appreciation of i) Measurement transducers ii) Design of complete measurement systems iii) Control algorithms employed in conventional control systems iv) Closed loop control strategies COURSE CONTENT 1.0 Introduction to measurement 1.1 Measurement transducers & performance characteristics for 1.1.0 Temperature: RTDs, Thermocouples, Pyrometers etc; 1.1.1 Pressure: Bourdon tube, Differential pressure transducer, Pressure switches etc ; 1.1.2 Position: Potentiometer, Shaft encoders, LVDT, Proximity detectors, Synchros and resolvers, Small displacement transducers etc; 1.1.3 Flow: Differential pressure flowmeters (Orifice plates, Venturi tube, Pitot tube ), Turbine flowmeter, Electromagnetic flowmeter, Ultrasonic flowmeter etc; 1.1.4 Weight: Strain gauges, bridge circuits, loadcells, belt weighers, magnetoelastic devices etc; 1.1.5 Level: Float-based systems, Ultrasonic methods, Pressure-operated transducers, level switches etc; 1.1.6 Velocity, vibration and acceleration: Tachometers, Tachogenerators, Accelerometers etc; 2.0 Pneumatics and process control valves: Compressors, Pressure regulation, Control valves ( ball, globe, butterfly), I/P & P/I converters, Actuators, Positioners 3.0 Recording and display devices: LEDs, Computer-driven VDUs, Analog or digital instruments, Bar graphs, Chart recorders etc; 4.0 Closed loop control: 4.0.1 Introduction to automatic control systems 4.0.2 Auto-control objectives
