Anti-symmetric Thin-walled Beam Theory with Structural Discontinuity

Dr Shihua Miao shihua@ship.soton.ac.uk - School of Engineering Sciences Telephone: 023 80596524
Introduction Recent trends in capacity, hence size, growth in container ships have increased the importance of torsion, particularly how it is influenced by the large deck openings and structural discontinuities present in such ships. Beam theory is still an important tool of ship design, particularly in the stage of concept design. But most beam theory dont take in account the structural discontinuity at the abrupt changes in cross-sectional properties which occur at the transitions between open and closed parts of the ship. Alternatively 3D FE methods is powerful and popular tool for ship designers. However the principal modes of dry analysis by 3D FE may contain clusters of local and erroneous information which may tends to be obscure the more important information on the global behaviour of the ship hull. Therefore thin-walled beam theory of coupled bending and torsion which takes into account the structural discontinuity has been implemented. Investigations has been mode on the consequences of these effects on the dry antisymmetric modal characteristics and consequent waveinduced loads. A beam model with more accurate representation of warping and structural discontinuities is applied to a box beam to assess these influences and compare predictions of natural frequencies and mode shapes with previous calculations and finite element (FE) predictions. The analysis is subsequently applied to a feeder containership travelling in regular oblique waves and resultant loads are compared with predictions obtained from previous two (2D) - and three-dimensional (3D) hydroelasticity analyses.
