The mission of Shero, Incorporated is to empower girls of various social, economic, racial, & academic backgrounds through cutting-edge & thought-provoking programming within the Greater Chicago-land area. Our goal is to inspire girls by nurturing a sense of power and strength within each girl as to help her attain her dreams & honor her true potential.
SHERO, INCORPORATED INTRODUCES the inaugural I AM SHERO SUMMIT 2011 for middle
& high school girls (grades 7-12) of various social, economic, racial, & academic backgrounds in the greater Chicagoland area on October 29th and October 30th, 2011.
THE THEME OF THE SUMMIT, I AM SHERO, expresses that each and every girl is STRONG,
FIERCE, & BRILLIANT in her own right. Every girl has been given her own gifts and talents created for a specific purpose to be shared with the world. We want girls to realize when they tap into their strength they can celebrate who they really are and achieve their most grandiose dreams!
THE SUMMIT WILL SERVE AS A CATALYST TO stimulate thought provoking discussion about
various issues affecting girls today, such as: body image, dating, domestic violence, sexual responsibility, and the importance of higher education. Our goal is to empower girls to think, feel, and conduct themselves confidently as the result of an improved self-esteem.
THE TWO DAY SUMMIT WILL BE HELD AT Rauner College Prep, located at 1337 W. Ohio Street
Chicago, Illinois 60642. This facility will accommodate over 300 girls, our workshops hosts, special guests, community members, and volunteers.
WORKSHOP I: In Take Me As I Am, girls will discuss the value of self-esteem and self-worth, challenging the
status quo of how girls feel about themselves. Participants will also discuss the importance of mental and physical health; providing them with coping skills and advice to lead a healthier life. According to a national report on selfesteem, 62% of all girls feel insecure and not sure of themselves in all areas of their lives.
WORKSHOP II: In A Womans Worth, participants will engage in a guided dialogue which will cover risky
behaviors, HIV & AIDS, teen pregnancy, & overall sexual responsibility. Participants will learn the importance of respecting their bodies and demanding that respect from others. They will be prepared to better handle difficult situations and know how protect themselves. Girls who possess high self-esteem are less likely to become pregnant as teenagers. As indicated in the National Campaign to Prevent Teen & Unplanned Pregnancy, Illinois ranks in the top ten in birth rates & teen girls with STDs. Our girls ARE worth this conversation!
SHERO SHOWCASE: The Summit will host an All Girl Expo Saturday afternoon to supplement the life
skills discussed during the Summit and expose the participants to a myriad of colleges & universities, organizations, services, and programs in the local area designed with them in mind. The Summit will host this expo to provide the girls with opportunities for positive engagement, enrichment, and empowerment post-Summit. We will create a space where our participants have access to the opportunities available first-hand in an effort to have real-life application of the knowledge and skills gained during the Summit.
The I AM SHERO SUMMIT 2011 will host 2 PANEL DISCUSSIONS & the CLOSING CEREMONY on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30TH:
PANEL DISCUSSION I: From a Mans Perspective is our opening, all-male panel discussion on Sunday
morning. This panel discussion is designed to expose the participants to a male point of view on topics such as dating, sex, self-esteem, and body image. Girls will be able to speak candidly about issues concerning them.
PANEL DISCUSSION II: In B.C.B.G. (Being a Cool Brown Girl) is the second panel discussion. This
panel will answer questions that the participants submitted on their registration form concerning their thoughts, issues, and questions concerning growing up girl. The panelists will reinforce the ideas of self-esteem, sexual responsibility, & higher education as well.
