NEWYORK (AP) Justin
Bieber is in the holiday spirit:
The singer is the first artist on
the Universal Music roster to
have part of his album sales
benefit charity.
Partial sales from Under
the Mistletoe, his Christmas
album that is out Nov. 1, will
go to various charities, includ-
ing Pencils of Promise and the
Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Universal never actually
allowed money from the
album to go to charity, so its
kind of a unique thing and Im
very happy and proud of what
weve done, the 17-year-old
said in an interview from
Lima, Peru, on Monday.
Universal Music Group in
the parent company to labels
like Interscope Records and
Island Def Jam Music Group.
Its roster includes Eminem,
Rihanna, Kanye West and
Lady Gaga.
Bieber said he isnt sure
how much of the sales will go
to charity, but thanks his team
for helping him achieve his
goal of wanting to help others
during the holiday season.
I tell them basically what I
want and they kind of go and
help me get it done, said
Bieber, who will also donate
money to various food banks.
Under the Mistletoe fea-
tures collaborations with Mari-
ah Carey and Boyz II Men,
among others. He said he
wanted to work with people
who had great experiences
with Christmas albums.
They were all great people
and fun to be around, said the
Canadian-born entertainer,
who appears on a super fes-
tive version of Careys classic
song All I Want for Christ-
mas.
Chris Brown co-wrote and
co-produced the song Christ-
mas Eve, which Bieber says
all the ladies will like. And
there are also tunes featuring
Usher and the country trio the
Band Perry.
Theyve been really suc-
cessful and great in the coun-
try world, so I wanted to get
them on my Christmas album
and cross some barriers and try
to get some different audience
members to listen to my
music, he said.

Aviewer uprising
for zombie drama
NEWYORK (AP) AMC
network says The Walking
Dead began its second season
with a vengeance, delivering
7.3 million viewers for Sun-
days premiere telecast.
AMC reported Monday that
the zombie drama went on to
boost its total viewership to 11
million viewers for the nights
three airings of the episode.
This eclipsed the year-ago
audience for the series, which
emerged as a surprise hit by
averaging 5.2 million viewers
weekly during that first season.
Based on the popular comic
book of the same name, The
Walking Dead depicts the
aftermath of a zombie apoca-
lypse confronted by a group of
survivors outside Atlanta. Its
cast includes Andrew Lincoln,
Jon Bernthal and Sarah Wayne
Callies.

MICHAEL SULLIVAN/The News-Review
Draper Brewing owner Sam Eslinger discusses his brewing process last week in Tenmile. The Umpqua Brew Fest returns to
the Roseburg for a second year Friday and Saturday. Proceeds benefit Umpqua Watersheds; organizers hope to present 40
kegs from about two dozen breweries. A home brewers competition is featured this year as well.
ON THE COVER
RYAN IMONDI
The News-Review
ix weeks before last years inau-
gural Umpqua Brew Fest, Buzz
Long and Steve Bahr sat down to
plan the celebration. They had
ideas and hopes, but everything else was
a guess everything except for the beer.
From what were learning from beer
people, if you pour it, they will come,
Bahr recalled.
Following that logic, the two gathered
up as many breweries as they could,
booked music and made sure there was
food.
The end result was a success, the two
said. Although the weather was far from
favorable, with daylong showers outside
the Douglas County Fairgrounds Floral
Building, more than 1,000 tasting glasses
were sold and 22 of the 25 kegs they pur-
chased were emptied.
It was a great time. This year were
inside, though, said Bahr, laughing with
Long about how unpredictable fall
weather can be in Oregon.
Satisfied with last years efforts, Long
and Bahr decided to grow the event for
its second year. Both work for Umpqua
Watersheds, the nonprofit conservation
group sponsoring the festival.
This years brew fest has expanded
from one to two days and is expected to
have 40 kegs from 24 breweries. Four-
teen are from Oregon with breweries
from California, Washington, Colorado,
Hawaii and Utah all featuring beers. The
number of tasting glasses has tripled
from last year to 3,000.
Were in for the long haul for this
event, Long said. We want it to be on
peoples radar every year.
Long said that even though wine
appears to dominate the landscape in the
Umpqua Valley, there is a solid chunk of
beer drinkers in the area. He added that
local breweries such as Ninkasi Brewing
Co. in Eugene and Deschutes Brewery in
Bend have helped energize an ever-grow-
ing Oregon craft beer market.
We dont have a community with
30,000 college students or a brewery
HOP

Umpqua Brew Fest
plans second year
of music and beer
infrastructure, but we do have
reason to believe that this fes-
tival will continue to grow,
said Long, who expects a rea-
sonable percentage of the
attendees to travel from out-
side of Douglas County.
Catering to local beer enthu-
siasts, this years brew fest
will feature a home brewers
competition. The competition
will be hosted by the Umpqua
Valley Brewers Guild and
awards the best beers created
by home brewers.
It was kind of a no-brainer.
If youre going to have a festi-
val for beer you need to
include the home brewers,
said Diane Griffin, member of
the Umpqua Valley Brewers
Guild.
Wanting to add authenticity
to the event, the brewers guild
turned to the Beer Judge Certi-
fication Program for a sanc-
tioned competition. Profes-
sional judges, including a mas-
ter judge, will be present to
rate the 40 different beers
entered by individuals.
Griffin said she and the fes-
tival organizers believed the
competition was important
because home brewing is a
foundation to creating quality
beer.
There are loads of people
who brew. Most of the great
craft beer people will be
enjoying at this festival started
out as a home brew in some-
ones garage or
driveway, Griffin said.
Although beer will be the
festivals focal point, Long and
Bahr wanted to make sure that
people are educated about
water conservation and the
importance of having a clean
water source. Umpqua Water-
sheds will have a tent at the
festival with information on
water.
We are one of the few
counties in the country where
our watershed is completely
encapsulated in our county
borders. We feel we really
need to help ensure our water
is good for us, Long said.
The brew fest at its core is a
fundraiser for Umpqua Water-
sheds. Organizers said funds
will go toward protecting and
restoring the local watersheds
ecosystem.
One of the breweries at this
years festival, Oakshire Brew-
ing of Eugene, promotes these
ideas, Bahr and Long said.
Oakshire will feature its
Watershed IPAand Landtrust
Lager at the festival. Long said
that a percentage of proceeds
from the beers will be donated
to protect the Eugene water-
shed.
The breweries get it. If you
dont have clean water, youre
not going to have good beer,
Long said.
Bahr and Long added that
people attending the festival
should remember that the most
important part is to have fun.
This is a celebration. Were
celebrating craft beer, water
and autumn, Long said.

LONDON (AP) The
Stone Roses, one of the best-
loved and most influential
bands to emerge from Britains
Madchester scene, announced
Tuesday that they are reuniting
and working on new material.
The band members, who split
in 1996 after releasing two
albums, said they will play two
shows in their hometown of
Manchester on June 29 and 30,
followed by an international
tour.
Our plan is to take on the
world, said singer Ian Brown
as the band announced its
reunion at a London news
conference.
Its not a trip down memory
lane, he added. We are doing
new songs.
Formed by Brown and gui-
tarist John Squire, the bands
self-titled 1989 debut album
was a huge British hit. But fans
waited five years for the follow-
up, Second Coming, and the
group soon split up amid inter-
nal wrangling and legal dis-
putes.
The band members insisted
for years that they would not get
back together, but Squire said
he and Brown had met recently
at the funeral of bass player
Gary Mani Mounfields
mother and in some ways it
felt like 15 years ago was yes-
terday.
The bands blend of rock,
pop, psychedelia and dance
influences made it one of the
biggest acts to emerge from the
Madchester scene in the late
80s and early 90s in and
around the northwest England
city of Manchester.

Thus begins Love at First
Bark, a witty yet poignant
story that rivals any other dog
tale because Klam relates a
heart-rending message about
how Morris helps to mend her
fragile marriage.
Klams love affair with dogs
began with a Boston terrier she
named Otto, which she rescued
virtually from the jaws of death
by euthanasia at an animal
shelter.
Tragically, Otto died unex-
pectedly. I was devastated,
she said. But out of that grief
she began volunteering with a
program to rescue dogs des-
tined to be euthanized. She
wanted her volunteer time to
be a tribute to Ottos memory.
In the six years she has been
with the program, she says she
has fostered 25 dogs until
homes could be found for
them.
Love at First Bark is the
second book she has written
about her experiences rescuing
otherwise-doomed dogs. Earli-
er she wrote You Had Me at
Woof, again detailing, as in
this book, the joy each dog
brings to the rescuer in the
form of love, loyalty, patience,
friendship and companionship.
The story of Morris rescue
was the platform for Klam to
tell other stories
about rescuing dogs.
These include
Clementine, a very
sick dog with a neu-
rological disease,
and a horror story
about a Hurricane
Katrina survivor
with its head stuck
in a pickle jar a
pitiful dog who got
the name Jarhead.
Klam had gone to
New Orleans to help
with the rescue of
dogs displaced dur-
ing the hurricane.
She joins the
chase after Jarhead
is spotted a chase
that sends her racing
through receding
flood waters in the
only pair of shoes
she brought on the
trip. The dog is
finally trapped and
is renamed Pickles.
When its discov-
ered there is another
dog in the shelter
with that name, the little
female dog is rechristened yet
again. Shes so feisty that shel-
ter workers decide to call her
Jalapeo, later shortened to
Pepper.
Finding homes for the dogs
is Klams devoted task. Even-
tually, Morris is accepted by
the Connecticut-based Simon
Foundation, which trains dogs
to become adoptable. Pit bulls
like Morris are the most misun-
derstood of the canine breeds,
Klam says. She said Morris
was an abused animal with cig-
arette burns on his paws,
apparently inflicted in an effort
to make him more aggressive
for fighting. What she found in
Morris was a lovable, sweet,
mellow dog that had been
through hell.
What Klam hopes the reader
will take away from this book
is the reward for people willing
to take a chance with dogs and
cats or with anything else.
You never know what the
reward will be until you come
through to the other side, she
concludes.
You dont have to be a dog
lover to enjoy the delightful
way Klam writes about her
passion.

Heres a sports fairy tale
that never gets old: Under-
dog team with few resources
but a lot of heart beats the
odds and comes out on top.
That is what actually hap-
pened to the 1971-72 womens
basketball squad at tiny
Immaculata College.
Its also what happened to
The Mighty Macs, a small-
budget movie about the teams
improbable national champi-
onship that overcame its own
obstacles to make it to Holly-
wood.
The film starring Carla Gug-
ino, Marley Shelton, David
Boreanaz and Ellen Burstyn
hits theaters Friday.
We really needed to be
patient and believe in the story
and the right distribution plat-
form for the story, said Tim
Chambers, who wrote and
directed the film. ... It was
definitely worth the wait.
The true story of the Mighty
Macs has always read like a
movie script.
It starts in 1971 with a 23-
year-old named Cathy Rush.
The former high school bas-
ketball star was coaching the
ragtag team at Immaculata, a
struggling Catholic school for
women near Philadelphia. She
was barely older than her play-
ers.
The Macs, who had no home
court because their field house
had burned down, practiced at
local gyms and played all their
games on the road. When they
earned the 15th seed in the
first-ever womens U.S. colle-
giate championship tourna-
ment in 1972, players held raf-
fles and sold toothbrushes to
raise money for the trip.
Immaculata upset three
teams to reach the finals.
There, the scrappy Macs faced
off against nemesis West
Chester in a nail-biting
rematch and won. Cue the
confetti.
In the following years, Rush
was approached many times
about making the Macs Cin-
derella story into a movie. But
every would-be production
turned into a pumpkin.
So Rush was understandably
wary when Chambers came to
her around 2004. But she was
won over by his strong back-
ing former Philadelphia
76ers president Pat Croce is an
executive producer and per-
sonal connections to the story.
Chambers had grown up in
the area and, as a child, saw
Rush and the Mighty Macs
practice at his Catholic grade
schools gym. And he was
taught by the same nuns who
run Immaculata the Sisters,
Servants of the Immaculate
Heart of Mary.
The more I was around
him, the more I was convinced
that if anyone could do this, he
could do it, Rush said.
Filming for Our Lady of
Victory the movies origi-
nal title began in 2007 at
Immaculata and, ironically, in
the gym of nearby West
Chester University. Chambers
cast Katie Hayek, a former
University of Miami shooting
guard and theater major, as star
player Trish Sharkey.
But Hayek was diagnosed
with cancer as cameras were
set to roll. Awig, tenacious
work ethic and rearranged
shooting schedule helped mask
the effects of chemotherapy,
which Hayek said successfully
treated her Hodgkins lym-
phoma.
Then, just as the $7.5 mil-
lion production wrapped in
2008, the recession hit. Cham-
bers couldnt find a distributor.
So he took the G-rated
movie billed as part Sister
Act, part Hoosiers on
the festival circuit for family
films. Good reception, but still
no bites. Chambers was
offered a straight-to-video deal
and turned it down. He wanted
a shot at the big dance.
Three years after filming
ended, Chambers got it. Ocean
Avenue Entertainment is dis-
tributing The Mighty Macs
on the 40th anniversary of the
teams winning season.
Whether it becomes a champ
at the box office remains to be
seen.
Chambers described the
movie as transcending gender
and sports to tell a story about
the equality of dreams in
this case, that young women in
the 1970s were entitled to pur-
sue their passions the same
way men did.
The film takes some liberties
with details; the nuns who
cheered on their beloved Macs
probably didnt wear high-top
Converse sneakers, as they do
in the movie. And Rush didnt
have a nun for an assistant
coach (Sister Sunday, played
by Shelton). But the overall
message is faithful to history.
Its an enjoyable, whole-
some story about something
that really did happen, said
Theresa Shank Grentz, who
played on the championship

NEWYORK (AP) It
wasnt long ago that Bette
Midler blasted Lady Gaga on
Twitter for appearing in a cos-
tume that was similar to
Midlers famous mermaid-in-a-
wheelchair get-up. Now the
Divine Miss M is extending an
olive branch by suggesting
Gaga buy some of her origi-
nals.
I think she should go for a
real wheelchair and a real fish-
tail because these are really
beautiful. They are decorated
and hand-beaded, Midler said
in an interview Tuesday. If
she is interested, she can have
whatever she wants because
she is a very talented girl and I
love her a lot.
Gaga and the rest of the
world will soon be able to bid
on that costume and more, as
Midler is selling some of her
most iconic outfits through
Juliens Auctions in Beverly
Hills, Calif., on Nov. 12, with
some of the proceeds benefit-
ing her charity, the New York
Restoration Project.
THE ASSOCIATED
PRESS: Was it crazy to go
through and look at all of those
costumes, sizes and styles?
MIDLER: It was my weight.
It was my height. It was the
fashion. It was what color my
hair was. It was who I was liv-
ing with, or who I was in love
with. It is very, very moving,
but it is also time to spin that
stuff out into the world. You
get to a certain point in life and
you say, Do I really want my
daughter to have to deal with
this when I am gone? It is just
so massive and you dont. You
really dont. You want people
to have the joy of it while you
are still alive.
AP: How did you decide
what to auction?
MIDLER: The Juliens peo-
ple came down to my ware-
houses and we looked through
the stuff. Some of the stuff is
so well known and iconic, they
kind of cherry-picked what
they thought was the stuff that
the fans and interested parties
would respond to the most, and
that is what they chose. I took
some of the things out of the
auction. Some of it is so senti-
mental, has great sentimental
value for me. Honestly, almost
every part of my career is rep-
resented in this particular auc-
tion. It is really stunning. There
are over 300 items stuff
from the movies, stuff from the
live show, stuff from my televi-
sion shows, stuff from record
covers. There are gold records.
There is sheet music. Oh my
gosh, shoes, jewelry. You name
it, it is all in there. It is amaz-
ing that I saved it all, and it is
amazing that there is so much
of it and that it passed so fast.
It just went so quickly, in the
blink of an eye. I have been
doing it for 40 years.
AP: What are some of the
items that you could not part
with?
MIDLER: The dress that I
wore to the red carpet for the
opening of The Rose. I kept
that back. That was the dress
that made me cry because it
was such a wonderful time in
my life and I was surrounded
by friends and I was so thin.
AP: Do you look back on
some of this and think, I cant
believe I wore that?
MIDLER: You can say I
cant believe I dressed up as a
fish. You can say that. You can
say I cant believe I came out
in a pair of knickers that were
up to my neck. I cant believe I
wore a pair of pants up to my
neck. You can say that about
practically everything. But, I
remember it all so fondly. It
was a great ride. Just the best
ride, just the most fun.
team and is the basis for
Hayeks character.
Grentz and the Mighty Macs
went on to win the national
titles in 1973 and 74 as well.
But the basketball program got
left behind after the passage of
Title IX, which allowed col-
leges to offer women sports
scholarships something tiny
Immaculata could not afford.
The school began admitting
men in 2005 and currently has
both mens and womens Divi-
sion III basketball teams.
Rush, who now runs a string
of childrens summer camps,
was inducted into the Basket-
ball Hall of Fame in 2008.
Grentz became the first full-
time womens basketball
coach in the nation at Rutgers,
later leaving to coach at Illi-
nois. Today, she works as
Immaculatas vice president
for university advancement.
Teammates Rene Muth Port-
land and Marianne Crawford
Stanley followed similar paths:
Portland became the longtime
coach at Penn State; Stanley
won three championships as
coach at Old Dominion, later
coaching the WNBAs Wash-
ington Mystics.
Rush set the example for
them and many other
women to follow their
dreams, said Chambers.
Thats a remarkable testa-
ment to her, and why shes in
the Hall of Fame, and why
shes a pioneer in womens
sports, Chambers said.

WARSAW, Poland (AP)
Two competitors at the World
Scrabble Championships were
asked to empty their pockets
when a letter G went miss-
ing.
An official said Tuesday that
the disappearance of a G tile
occurred during the interna-
tional event, which was held in
the Polish capital from Oct.
12-16.
Brian Dede, the event coor-
dinator, said a referee had to
intervene when opponents
Edward Martin from Britain
and Chollapat Itthi-Aree from
Thailand noticed a missing tile
during the last draw of their
match.
He said that led to a search
on and under the table, and
that both players were asked
to show the contents of their
pockets.
The missing letter was
nowhere to be found, so the
referee added another G to
the letters to create a
complete set.
DOUGLASS K. DANIEL

T
heres a great story
about a great actor
between the covers of
Spencer Tracy: ABiography,
yet its tougher to get to than it
ought to be. An excellent
researcher and writer, author
James Curtis needed to be
more ruthless when it came to
deciding what to put in and
what to leave out.
At 1,001 pages, the sheer
heft of the book is bound to
annoy fans of classic films and
scare away casual readers.
Thats unfortunate because
Curtis has written the defini-
tive biography of Tracy, one of
Hollywoods most respected
actors and one of films more
enduring stars.
Unlike previous authors,
Curtis had the cooperation of
Tracys daughter, Susie, and
access to his letters, journals
and other papers. Thus,
Tracys voice and perspective
are strong as Curtis follows his
path from Milwaukee miscre-
ant and struggling actor to
back-to-back Oscar winner for
Captains Courageous (1937)
and Boys Town (1938).
Another benefit is a fuller
and fairer look at Louise
Tracy, usually marginalized as
the long-suffering wife (they
married in 1923) whom Tracy
left for Katharine Hepburn. In
Curtis pages she is
much more: a promis-
ing actress who gave
up her career to be a
supportive wife; a
devoted mother of two
children, one of them
deaf and struck with
polio; and a crusader
for education of deaf
children and their par-
ents. Her marriage
was troubled well
before Hepburn
became Tracys long-
time paramour while
they filmed Woman
of the Year (1942).
The well-known
outlines of Tracys
personality deepen
considerably with
Curtis work. Personal
shyness and profes-
sional pessimism
never left him, even
after scores of films and the
adulation of colleagues. His
temperamental side he
could be petty, cranky and
unreasonably demanding
cannot be separated from his
alcoholism.
Binges were Tracys reac-
tion to professional strains and
the guilt that came from being
an adulterous Catholic. Hep-
burn, his co-star in nine
movies, wasnt immune to his
depressions and rages. The
more we learn about their lives
together he died shortly
after they completed Guess
Whos Coming to Dinner
(1967) the less enchanted
their love story appears.
Instead of straining readers
stamina with interesting but
unnecessary detail, Curtis
should have stayed focused on
what was significant to his
subject. Still, Spencer Tracy:
ABiography belongs in the
classic movie fans library. Its
portrait of the actor is
unequaled, and its description
of the American film industry
in his time is a sharp reminder
of how things used to be.

A Biography (Knopf),

Letter G goes missin at Scrabble championship
LAS VEGAS (AP) Las
Vegas icon Wayne Newton said
a yearlong effort to turn his
sprawling Sin City estate, Casa
de Shenandoah, into a tourist
destination is almost complete.
Apromotional tour is expect-
ed to begin next month and
Newton told The Associated
Press he hopes to offer the first
public tours by February.
Visitors will be able to survey
the singers collection of Euro-
pean antiques and celebrity
mementos including Nat
King Coles watch, a Johnny
Cash guitar and a champagne
glass used by Frank Sinatra to
toast Newton.
Its going great, Newton
said Tuesday. It should be
open by January or February.
The attraction was initially
slated to open in December, but
Newton said the project was
delayed because construction
permits were not approved as
quickly as planned.
Amuseum, theater, visitors
center and other
attractions were being
added to the property.
And revised building
plans submitted last
month call for
expanding the muse-
um space and theater,
where Newton will
perform at least occa-
sionally.
Newton received
permission last year to
turn his lavish home
into a tourist venue
after a bruising battle
in which his neighbors
said they didnt want
tour buses invading the
largely residential neighborhood
where the Danke Schoen
singer built his 10,000-square-
foot home decades ago.
The 40-acre estate features
South African penguins, Arabi-
an horses, Impressionist paint-
ings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
and 17th-century antiques col-
lected from European castles.
Some of the keepsakes were
gifts from the mentors and
friends who helped make New-
ton famous, including Sinatra,
Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin and
Jack Benny.
Newton, his wife and their
daughter are expected to move
into a smaller house on the
property, ceding the main house
to the public.
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) The
effort to rebuild Joplin is getting
a boost from a popular TV
show.
ABCs Extreme Makeover:
Home Edition is building a
dream home for not just one
family, but for seven. The
makeover work was beginning
Wednesday and is expected to
take a week. It is another effort
by volunteers to reshape the
southwest Missouri community
devastated by a tornado on May
22 that killed 162 people and
destroyed or damaged more
than 7,500 homes.
The TVprogram has been
coordinating with Joplin offi-
cials for several months. Orga-
nizers say the goal is to provide
a foundation that will spur addi-
tional rebuilding.
Show host Ty Pennington
will give the call on Oct. 26 to
move that bus and reveal the
new homes to the families for
the first time.
The families picked for the
show were learning of their
selection on Wednesday, and by
midmorning, those names had
not been revealed. The shows
Builder Braveheart March
was scheduled for Wednesday
afternoon.
The construction work will
involve a massive undertaking
in a short amount of time.
Springfield, Mo., contractor
Sam Clifton is leading the con-
struction effort. The TVshow
brought in 18 project managers,
and the Home Builders Associa-
tion of Southwest Missouri was
helping to coordinate the efforts
of thousands of volunteers,
building professionals and
tradespeople. Twenty-one build-
ing contractors, including six
from Joplin, are participating.
Volunteers are working 12-hour
shifts, and crews will work
around the clock.
All material for the build was
donated, and churches in Joplin
are working together to prepare
about 30,000 meals for those
involved in the building
process.
Clifton has been involved in
Extreme Makeover: Home
Edition before. In 2009, his
Millstone Custom Homes led
the effort to provide a new
home for the Hampton family
in Ash Grove, Mo.
We are thrilled to be part of
this massive undertaking,
Clifton said at a news confer-
ence in August announcing
plans for the project. It will be
no small task, but our team is
eager to help rebuild Joplin in
the aftermath of the devastation
we experienced in May.
The EF-5 tornado reached
speeds of more than 200 mph
and ripped a path of devastation
through the heart of Joplin.
Entire neighborhoods were left
in shambles, homes completely
flattened. Shopping centers and
business districts were
destroyed. The community lost
its high school and other
schools. But Joplins comeback
is already evident. The school
year started on schedule, with
students meeting in converted
stores. Homes are starting to
sprout up. Millions of tons of
debris from destroyed homes
and businesses have been
cleared and bulldozed, waiting
for rebirth. Construction crews
are working late into the night
to fix damaged homes and busi-
nesses.

Q: Years ago, I recall some-
one saying that Dan Marino,
quarterback for the Miami Dol-
phins, ran for fewer than 100
yards in his entire career. Is this
possible?
R.M.G., Wrightsville, Pa.
A: Dan Marino played for
the Dolphins from 1983 to 1999.
His legacy as a passer is phe-
nomenal, but he was not skilled
at scrambling or rushing. Mari-
no played in 242 games and
attempted rushing 301 times, but
he totaled only 87 yards in his
entire career. On the positive
side, he attempted 8,358 passes
and completed 4,967, for a total
of 61,361 yards. He threw for
420 touchdowns with 252 inter-
ceptions.
Q: I was watching reruns of
Hee Haw. Buck Owens intro-
duced a young lady with a fan-
tastic voice named Kenni
Huskey. By any chance is her
father Ferlin Huskey?
K.B., Borger, Texas
A: No, her father is not Ferlin
Husky. (Note the different
spelling of the last names.)
Kenni Huskey was born in
Newport, Ark., and grew up in
Memphis, Tenn. At the age of 5,
in 1959, she began singing
country music and made her
first stage appearance under the
guidance of her country music
performer/songwriter parents,
Bill and Julia Huskey. At age 12,
she performed at the Grand Ole
Opry. She made several record-
ings in Sam Phillips Sun Stu-
dio.
Kenni was only a teenager
when she moved to Southern
California with her parents and
played various venues with her
family. She was discovered by
Buck Owens at age 15 and was
signed to a five-year performing
contract with Bucks band. She
also recorded for Capitol
Records and had several hits.
She appeared in at least six
episodes of Hee Haw.
One critic said, Miss
Huskeys voice is exactly that,
husky. The story went on to
liken her to a mule skinner in a
miniskirt. Her latest CD, Trib-
ute to My Second Dad ... Buck
Owens is widely available.
Mr. Know-It-All
Marino wasnt much of a runner

Movie: An American in Paris
Songs by George and Ira Gersh-
win underscore this tale of an artist
caught between two women in post-
war Paris. The thin story is merely
an excuse for director Vincente Min-
nelli and choreographer-dancer-ac-
tor Gene Kelly to dazzle viewers
with a piece of moviemaking so joy-
ous and triumphant, the movie took
the 1951 Academy Award for best
picture over A Streetcar Named
Desire and A Place in the Sun.
Leslie Caron co-stars.

HBO presents the 11th install-
ment of its 24/7 reality franchise,
this time following boxers Manny
Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Mar-
quez as they promote and train
for their Nov. 12 pay-per-view fight
in Las Vegas. Over four episodes,
the series will provide behind-the-
scenes access and in-depth inter-
views with both fighters as they
prepare for their third meeting in
the ring.

force him to vacate the premises.
He tries all kinds of nasty tricks to
force Oliver and his family out, but
the boy gets help from a neighbor

its time to move on. Cameron Dad-

Speedy cars and risky stunts,
which put police in many localities
on higher alert after this movie
opened, fuel director Rob Cohens
2001 drama. Vin Diesel (The
Chronicles of Riddick, XXX) plays
Dom, the leader of a high-throttle
gang of thieves, with Paul Walker

the group. The policeman becomes

Puppies vs. Babies
Cuteness abounds when such
viral video classics as Biting Baby
and Real-Life Cat Burglar go up
against a field of cute contender
clips. This time, the initial round is
decided by amateur bowlers, Har-

trio of karate kids. Stand-up come-

chooses which of the finalists hits it
