How many doubles plus one equations can you find on the grid below? Shade in the 2 numbers that form the equation and write it along with the sum in the box at the bottom of the page. Two examples have been done for you.
3 2 5 0 8 0 5 1
5 9 8 6 4 10 6 5
1 7 10 5 2 7 4 3
2 5 1 5 3 6 1 6
6 3 1 2 0 3 1 3
8 4 4 2 5 4 7 6
9 0 2 3 9 7 9 2
0 1 2 6 7 7 8 0
Equations: 3+4=7 6 + 7 = 13

Tips:
Ask students to stand at the beginning of the activity. Once a student has read her card, she may sit down. This makes it easier to see how many people are left. Because most classes have more than eleven students, you may wish to split the class into groups of eleven and have the groups try to get the fastest time.

Front End Addition means that you add the tens first and then the ones.
32 + 46 Example: Step 1 - Add the tens: 30 + 40 = 70 Step 2 Add the ones: 2 + 6 = 8 Step 3 Add the tens and ones together: 70 + 8 = 78 So, 32 + 46 = 78
Now its your turn!
21 + 35
Add the tens: _____ + _____ = _____ Add the ones: _____ + _____ = _____ Add the tens and ones together: _____ + _____ = _____ So, 21 + 35 = _____
73 + 14
Add the tens: _____ + _____ = _____ Add the ones: _____ + _____ = _____ Add the tens and ones together: _____ + _____ = _____ So, 73 + 14 = _____
