About the QM
The Queen Margaret Union was established in 1890 as the student union for Queen Margaret College, previously situated near Queen Margaret Union, in what is currently the BBC Scotland building. When the College and the University of Glasgow merged it became the union for female students, and remained exclusively for women until 1979. It has moved around campus numerous times, nally settling in University Gardens in 1968. Today, the QM Union is the most popular union on campus, with 6500 members, without even counting our life members (theres more on life membership further on). The QM has a packed and diverse entertainment schedule throughout the year. Over the last year alone, the QMs stage has been graced by Killswitch Engage, Fightstar, Mr. Scruff, Mull Historical Society, Sons and Daughters, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, Reindeer Section, Keane, Biffy Clyro, The Polyphonic Spree. Colin Murray happens to be a regular visitor to the QM, and has pronounced us the best club in the UK. Every week the QM has a great selection of club nights. Whether youre into the latest chart music, alternative rock, or somewhere in between, the QMs got a club night for you. You can keep up to date with whats going on by visiting www.qmu.org.uk, watching out for information up around the Union or by reading qmunicate, our fortnightly magazine. The QMs bars stay open later than anywhere else on campus until 2am every night, with cheesy pop running until 3am, every Friday. The Food Factory is the most popular food outlet on campus, serving hot breakfasts from 8am, and hot meals right through to 8pm, with pizzas, salad and many other options too. Yummy. The Coffee Bar serves lovely, real, fairly-traded coffee all day to perk you up between lectures. The shop sells a great selection of all your Uni essentials, as well as providing late-opening offsales for QM members.
Ethical Information
Its great being a student, hopefully you have reasonable health, youve probably got a reasonable standard of living, and you should be spending all day studying something you enjoy, even if it has no use in the real world. Some people dont have it so well so heres a couple of things we do at the QM to try and make the world a little more fair. Nestl Ban A number of years ago, the campaigns committee asked the members whether they wanted to put in place a ban on Nestl products in support of Baby Milk action (see www.babymilkaction. org for more). The Nestl Corporation promotes articial infant feeding around the world, breaking a World Health Organisation code of marketing. According to the United Nation Children s Fund, reversing the decline in breastfeeding could save 1.5 million lives every year. The Union did not feel it could, in all good conscience, continue to stock their products. Last year the membership voted again as to whether or not the ban should continue and over 80% were in favour. The Union doesnt stock anything made or supplied by a Nestl related company.
Fair Trade Last year the QMU introduced a fair trade policy, which states that we will, where possible, offer a fair trade alternative to our other products. In February fair trade accreditation was awarded to the entire University of Glasgow and it is now bound. For more information on fair trade issues see www.fairtrade.org.uk.
If you feel strongly about issues that affect not only the student population but also the world in general then the campaigns committee is where you should be, we deal with the ethical standpoint of the QM by organising things such as the Nestle ban and our fair trade policy. We also look after the safety and wellbeing of the membership by running campaigns on issues such as sexual health, night safety and providing services like self defence classes. Another aspect of the Campaigns remit is raising money for charities on behalf of the union and also organising and running the University of Glasgow Kids Christmas party. Entertainments entertaiments@qmu.org.uk
The QM is one of Scotlands top venues for gigs and clubnights and the Entertainments Committee is responsible for maintaining this reputation. The committees remit covers two main areas: design and set-up. Design is the rst stage of any clubnight or new idea, here the committee discusses suggestions relating to the launching of new events or the theme of our existing ones. Set-up is where the ideas come to life, this element is connected to blowing up balloons, painting big wooden things, lifting heavy shit, operating sound and light equipment and making Qudos look pretty. You also get free beer and occasionally gig tickets, did I mention that?
Getting Involved
Publications publications@qmu.org.uk
Would you like the chance to meet your favourite band? Would you like to go to a lm premiere? How about having your photo seen by thousands of people? The QM Publications Committee produces qmunicate fortnightly throughout term time as well as the Freshers Handbook and the diary that you are reading, oh and we do the website as well. We are responsible for all aspects of these publications, so no matter where your heart lies, if it can be put down on paper, wed love to meet you. Every week there are opportunities to review gigs, lms and cds, chances to interview bands and celebrities, news stories to cover, photos to take, pages to be designed, new columns and features to be developed. We also always need more people to check grammar and spelling or if a picture is in the wrong place on the page. Social social@qmu.org.uk
The Social Committee is one of the most instrumental teams within the QM. We organise the everyday running of events like The Film Night, The Wednesday Night Pub Quiz, The Pool Competition, Mousetrap and UnPlugged as well as NorthPark, the QM music label. The committee members also help to come up with new ideas for these activities and are instrumental in their completion, creating an atmosphere that appeals to the diverse range of members of this Union. Freshers Week freshersweek@qmu.org.uk
The Freshers Week Convenor doesnt have regular committee meetings, as all the hard work happens over the summer when most of the students are back home. But were always open to new ideas and suggestions for Freshers Week. If you want to be a Freshers Week helper next year, look out for posters around the building in second semester.
Getting Involved
When and Where are these Committees? The committees all happen weekly in the Board Room, which is on the third oor (turn right when you leave the lift) Campaigns Monday Entertainments Tuesday Publications Wednesday Social Thursday 5pm 5.30pm 5.30pm 5.30pm
Board of Management
The only way is up, as they say and if you are interested in getting more involved than at committee level, perhaps you should think about running for board. The QM is run by students for students, with around thirty QM members presently on the Board of Management. All QM members are encouraged to get involved in the running of their union, and any member can stand for election to the Board of Management. Elections take place in November and March. The Board of Management meets on alternate Mondays, and any member may attend these if there is any issue that they would like to be discussed. Email president@qmu.org.uk for more details.
Life Membership
Are you graduating at the end of the year but dont want to give up the QM? Dont fret, help is at hand. If youve been a QM member for three consecutive years, you can become a life member. Dont worry if you havent, the Board of Management can use its discretion to allow you a life membership anyway. As a life member, you get to use the building and all its services, forever. You can also ensure the good running of the Union by voting in elections, or even joining the board in one of the two former student member positions. For more details, contact the Honorary Secretary on honsec@qmu. org.uk You can get a life membership application form from the General Ofce on the third oor, or download one from www.qmunity.co.uk The fee for life membership is 15, for a lifetime of fun. Dont think, by the way, that your interests wont be represented by the Board of Management - the post of Former Student Member has responsibility for addressing your needs, from clocks in the Food Factory for those of you with jobs, to real ale in the bar for those of you who would rather be unemployed.
Condoms
Safe sex is good, very good actually. With that in mind the QM offers a free condom service. The C-Card service is brought to you in association with the Sandyford Initiative, and after a brief registration gives you access to free condoms at any C-Card site. To register for C-Card simply pop up to the 3rd oor of the QM. A full selection of condoms is available, along with a bit of Sexual Health advice for those who want it. Keep an eye out for posters advertising the times the C-Card scheme operates, alternatively just ask at reception. For more information on Sexual Health visit www.sandyford.org or call the Sandyford Initiative on 0141 211 8600.
