Oct 13, 2011 Senator Robert Portman Russell Senate Office Building, Room 338 Constitution and Delaware Avenues, NE Washington, DC 20510-3506 Subject: Sen. Portman I'm Disappointed You Voted Against Good Jobs Dear Senator Portman, With nearly 30 million Americans unemployed or seeking more work, President Obama's American Jobs Act is a critical piece of legislation that would create almost two million good jobs and put our economy back on the path to recovery. It should have passed. Your vote against the American Jobs Act proves that you don't understand the struggles of everyday Americans. Instead of ignoring the millions of unemployed across the country, and siding with millionaires and billionaires, you, Senator, should be helping working families put food on the table, fill up our gas tanks, help us keep our homes and provide a better future for our children. Senator Portman, I urge you to stop ignoring the men and women who want to be working. Please stop holding up funding that will create the jobs that people in our communities need. Sincerely, Mr. David Harding

Sincerely, Ms. B. You are the freakin' rich fatcat who can come and go as you please from this dire place---we cannot. I know you and the vast majority of the GOP do not give a rat's ass about any of this--it is ALL MPG w/ you---Money, Power, Greed so why don't you just say it? Rob, we of the middle class are getting really fed-up with rich fascists ruining this country! The president is providing opportunities to turn things around and ignorant, greedy republicans keep F-ing up the solutions for fear of losing some lobbyist dollars! We would appreciate if you would start working for the country instead of your wallet! Senator Portman, I urge you to stop ignoring the men and women who want to be working. Please stop holding up funding that will create the jobs that people in our communities need. Sincerely, Mr. Eric Staples

Once again, partisan politics has taken the American Job Market hostage. Our elected officials need to step up to the podium and say reasonable things that will help our situation - not the rhetoric that is meant to line electoral coffers! Quit playing politics with the livlihood of your constituents. We need jobs in Ohio now. I've seen nothing from you or your party that has created anything except more of the same. What seems to be the problem, Senator? You can accept large 'contributions' from big business (I call it bribery so you will support their agenda), but you can't accept money from the Federal Government in the name of the State of Ohio in order to repair our crumbling infrastructure and provide much-needed jobs for our people here. I simply don't understand your thinking. You are being obstructionist in the extreme and it seems obvious to me that you don't have the welfare of either the state or its people at heart. The OWS is right: we definitely need a sea-change in the way things work in this country, starting with the Lawmakers who refuse to do the will of their electorate. Are there enough voters in the top 1% to keep electing you? Senator Portman, I urge you to stop ignoring the men and women who want to be working. Please stop holding up funding that will create the jobs that people in our communities need. Sincerely, Mrs. Katherine Schroeder

Sen. Portman. You don't have a clue how the average American is hurting. many of the citizins of this country can't find work at all, & yet you feel it is neccessary to vote strickley with your party on this issue. Your party talks about not taxing the rich because it will hurt the job creatures. The rich have had tax brakes for 10 years now. I ask you Mr. Sen. Portman "WHERE ARE ALL THE JOBS". We all know they are in China, Vietnam, Japan & anywhere but the U.S. You are suppose to be a U.S. Senator, not a world senator. Enjoy your time as senator, Hope it's your last. Dear Senator Portman, I feel you are not acting in the best interest of the people of Ohio. Passing the bill would put our state on the path of recovery. People would rather work than receive unemployment, welfare, or other assistance. The majority of people in the state of Ohio are hard and good workers, who as of late have been taken I feel for granted by busineesses. How would you feel if you had lost your job and their was a even a minute possiblity that the Job bill could provide you a means of taking care of your family. Congress is making almost impossible to live the American dream that our parents and grandparents enjoyed. Senator Portman, I urge you to stop ignoring the men and women who want to be working. Senator: I am praying your efforts on the Super Committee will show you have more unselfish interest in the benefit of our country than has been evidenced by your party -- which seems dead set on rejecting ANY policy of the Obama administration in order to defeat him. Northeast Ohioans, perhaps more than most Americans, need your support and willingness to act in their best interests. This is especially true when a fair and common-sense piece of legislation, like the Obama American Jobs Act, requires your approval, even though sponsored by a democratic administration. Senator Portman, I urge you to stop ignoring the men and women who want to be working. Please stop holding up funding that will create the jobs that people in our communities need. Sincerely, Mr. Micah Kirman

As a volunteer in an inner city school, I see the devastation to the children when parents aren't working. As we are reading, their stomachs are growling and they tell me about laying in bed and trying to fall asleep but they can't because their hungry. I see the dark circles under their eyes. Hello Senator Portman, I can't understand why you would vote down the American Jobs Act. It's not about being Republican or Democrat in this recession, it's about getting people back to work. Idle time for most leads to depression, more alcohol use/drugs and divorce. Having worked in Mental Health for 25+ years I have seen this first hand. In the 80's drug use and alcohol abuse were worse than any other decade until 2000-2009. We are now putting the criminally insane and developmentally disabled in prison with all the other inmates due to NO mental health money in Ohio. If it takes this reform to get the economy going, don't let a (D) or (R) be the deciding factor. Obama is doing a lousy job, be the bigger person and help the voters that will be voting for you. Think of the families that you would help, the small businesses,etc... Thanks, Bill McDonnell 4467 East Rd. Senator Portman, perhaps you have never experienced hungar or desperation through economic misfortune maybe even perhaps you have never experienced looking into the eyes of your children with the shame because you are unable to feed them or to maintain shelter for them. For countless of families this is a daily reality that they must contend with and at the same time hope for a brighter day the hope that could have been afforded to some through the passage of recent proposal to generate jobs. We all must vote our conscience and you as an elected offical hold the fate of so many families and children in your hands; if you can continue to deny the same as you excercise your right to mis-repesent the sentiments of those who elected you then clearly we were all decieved. Just as sure as the Sun does rise and set the day will come when you will be confronted with the results of your decision not to support a Jobs Bill be it directly or indirectly; then maybe you will appreciate the confidence afforded you in your position and your heart will be touched to touch the un-touchable in a way that will once again instill in them the opportunity to live their lives with the same dignity that you may feel is for a selected few. May God Bless America , because without his help we are all destined for defeat. Senator Portman, I urge you to stop ignoring the men and women who want to be working. As a retired administrator, I sat in Terrace Park school on Grandparents Day some years ago and had an opportunity to observe your son's rapid progress in the classroom. He displayed a high degree of intelligence and was quite articulate. Obviously, genetics played a role in his development but give credit to the Terrace Park faculty in his development. Just wonder how many of those fine teachers are out of work today. Perhaps your dogmatic GOP attitude has facilitated their demise. THINK about the kids future. Don't vote with the party. Vote for what you believe. I have always had a high regard for you as an individual and felt your political career would reflect an honest approach to Washington's confusion. Shame on you! I sure wish Ohio was a recall state like Wisconsin! You guys lied your way into office telling Ohioans that you were going to fix the jobs problem and all the congress has done is vote on abortion bills. All Kasick has done is alienate 70% of the republican voters by killing jobs with SB5/issue 2, blocking works in progress and selling off our infrastructure so we can pay private industry more to use it. Just you wait until you are up for reelection. I have never been so angry. Now, get off your ass and vote for the jobs bill and vote to pay for it at the expense of the people who stole America's economy. A 5% hike is too little - we should go back to the 70% of the Eisenhower era - then we could solve alot off our problems. And don't give me that trickle down crap - historically jobs increased when we raised taxes on the wealthy and decreased when we let them fritter away their ill gotten gains playing the stockmarket. History puts the lie to your whole agenda. You republican politicians are TRAITORS to America and the very people who elected you. It never ceases to amaze me that an individual in good conscience could vote against The American Jobs Act that would put people back to work in an urgent manner. This bill would show the American people that you have put the country first and NOT your party! But your actions do speak louder than words. You do realize there isn't ONE bill you have voted for in a bipartisan way that supports job creation and helping everyday struggling Americans. Whether it was to extend the unemployment benefits to long term unemployed, or pass this American Jobs Act, you are putting party above the peoples' needs. I'm so disappointed in your vote and in the Republican House and senators who time after time do everything in their power to obstruct every bill that can get people back to work. Shameful! I guess if you keep this up, nobody will have any money for anything and the the economy will go into a full depression! Dear Senator Portman, You should have voted YES for the American Jobs Act. Again you have acted short sighted when thinking about the Ohio electorate. This is not about the 2012 presidential campaign,it is about doing the right thing for the middle class and promoting legislation that will promote job growth. The majority of the American public including job creating small businesses are ready for you to tax the top 1% in order to bring down the deficit, support the affordable care act so that we can rein in the insurance costs that keep hurting small businesses and the public sector and basically do your job of representing our concerns instead of your re-election campaign and that of other republicans.
David Williams

Dear Sen. Portman, I'm Extremely Disappointed You Voted Against Good Jobs! I have no problem with trying to control the budget of this country; however, voting against the jobs bill was a vote AGAINST taking control of the budget. By helping defeat the Jobs Act, you are keeping the tax base smaller. Somehow that Doesn't seem wise to me... If the government wants more money, then it needs a broad tax base created by adding new jobs to the economy! Senator Portman, I urge you to stop ignoring the men and women who want to be working. Please stop holding up funding that will create the jobs that people in our communities need. Sincerely, Mrs. M E DuPrey

I am disappointed in your vote - I subscribe to the Manchester (OH) Signal and have read your columns in that newspaper. Many times I have felt you have used good judgement. However, this time I feel you have caved in to the demands of those with a great deal of money (for donations to campaigns?) and the Tea Party radical movement which I do not see wanting to do anything to help anyone but themselves. Please, reconsider your stance on this. If there are ways to improve the bill, please do so, but please don't continue to ignore my friends and neighbors who are suffering while out of work and wanting so desparately to go back to work and be able to contribute not only to their families but the community and country as well. Shame on you! As W's budget director, you helped screw up the economy. Now, you're voting against jobs that you & he took away during W's presidency. President Obama is trying to put people back to work but you & your Republican cohorts think only of the wealthy & priveleged. How would you feel if you were out of work & trying to pay for food, utilities, a mortgage, health insurance, etc.? Start thinking of all the people, not just the very wealthiest that Republicans always coddle & kowtow to. Instead of ignoring the millions of unemployed across the country, and siding with millionaires and billionaires, you, Senator, should be helping working families put food on the table, fill up our gas tanks, help us keep our homes and provide a better future for our children. ge to Sen. Portman here Senator Portman, I urge you to stop ignoring the men and women who want to be working. Please stop holding up funding that will create the jobs that people in our communities need. Sincerely, Mr. john philips

You and your Republican colleagues should be ashamed of voting against cloture. In effect you voted against having any debate of the American Jobs Act whatsoever. I do not believe this is in the tradition of Democracy. The jobs which would be created by this legislation are jobs that need doing. You probably have not noticed, but a great deal of our infrastructure is falling apart. Roads and bridges are crumbling and those which are still holding together were designed for much lower traffic loads than they are now carrying. I understand that you are now sponsoring a jobs bill which would consist mainly of the same old same old--lower taxes and fewer regulations. This strategy has not worked for the last ten years and there is no reason to think that it will work now. The biggest problem with our economy now is the lack of demand. To create demand we need to create jobs and get people working and spending money again. Giving money to those who already have money will not accomplish this. In addition I believe your program includes a balanced budget amendment. This has been a conservative fantasy for years and it will not solve any of our problems. In the end it it were to pass--which I doubt--it would create more problems. If you do not like the American Jobs Act I suggest you go back to the drawing board and come up with a plan which will actually create the jobs the country so badly needs. Senator Portman, I urge you to stop ignoring the men and women who want to be working. Please stop holding up funding that will create the jobs that people in our communities need. Sincerely, Mrs. Ann Smith
