SIZE: About 38" = 45"
MATERIALS: Yarn: Knitting worsted, 16 oz white (color
W), 3% oz each brown, tan, gold, and black for bear’s
faces, small amounts of pink, blue, and other bright colors;
crochet hook: size F (4.00 mm) o7 size thet gives you the
correct gauge; tapestry needle; small amount of polyester
or cotton batting for stuffing bear snouts.
GAUGE: 9 dc = 2"; 2rows = 1". Each block measures
about 7%" square.
BASIC BLOCK: See Blocks, page 85, for colors. Bear's
Face: starting at center, ch 2. Rnd 1 (right side): Work 6
sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join, but work around
and around with right side facing you. Mark beginning
of rnds. Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around (12 sc). End
3: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around (18
sc). Rnd 4: * 2 sc in next sc, ac in next 2 sc; repeat from *
around (6 sc inc), Continue in this manner for 4 more
mids, increasing 6 sc each rnd and being careful not to
work inc directly over those of previous rnd (48 sc). 51 st
in next sc and break off,
Snout: Work same as for face for 4 rds. Knd 5: Sc
in each sc around. Rnd 6: * Sc in 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc;
repeat from * around (30 sc}. Rind 7: Sc in each se around.
SI st in next sc and break off.
Ears: Make 2. Starting at inner ear with contrasting
color, ch 2. Row 1 (right side): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from
hook. Ch 1, turn. Row 2; Work 2 sc in each sc around,
working off last 2 loops of last sc on row with same color
as on face to change colors, Break off contrasting color.
Ch 1, turn. Rew 3: With same color as for face, sc in first
ac, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc} 5 times, sc in last sc.
Break off, leaving end for sewing.
Nose: Ch 2. Rnd 1 (right side): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch
from hook. SI st in first sc. Break off.
Border: Attach bright-color yarn to any sc on edge of
bear's face. Rnd 1: Ch 5, * skip mext sc, dc in next sc, ch
2; repeat from * around, ending sl st in 3rd ch of ch 5 (24
ch-2 sp, including remaining 2 ch of ch 5). Do not turn.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, work (2 de, ch 1, 3 dc} ower first ch 2 (first
corner made), * work (3 de over next ch 2) twice, work (3
de, ch 1, 3 de) over next ch 2 (corner made); repeat from
* 6 times more, work (3 dc over next ch 2} twice, sl st toof ch 3 (octagon made; edges may not lie completely

To complete block: Stuff snout lighthy and sew off-
‘center to bear’s face (lower edge of snout at bottom edge
of face and top of snout covering center of face), Sew nose
tocenter of snout. Embroider eyes above snout with small
straight stitches. Spread lower edge of ears to form V; sew
¥ edge in place at top of face.
BLOCKS: Make 30 in all. Following directioms for basic
block, make bears’ heads as follows: make 6 heads with
tan face and snout, brown inner ears, and black nose and
eyes; 6 heads with gold face and snout, tan, gold, or brown
inner ears, black nose and eyes; 6 heads with brown face
and snout, pink inner ears, nose, and eyes; 12 heads with
black face and nose, white snaut and inner ears, blue eyes.
Use any bright color for border.
ROSES: Make 20. With W, ch 2. Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd
ch from hook. Rnd 2: Working in front kxyp only work (3
de, sc) in each sc around. Rnd 3: Push sts of Rnd 2 forward
and, reaching behind these sts, work (3 dc, sc) in back
loop of each se on Rnd 1. Break off.
ASSEMBLY: Lay out blocks in desired color arrangement,
having 5 across and 6 down. Sew edges together with
yarn, matching sts. Sew a rose at each corner joining
where 4 blocks meet.
