Extra material for the teacher on the Web: Mime the story

STEPS Explain that now they are going to mime a whole story, not just individual items as in the previous activity. Explain that in groups of three, one person will go outside to read the text; the story and then come back and mime it, phrase by phrase or line by line for his /her partners to guess and write down. Explain that it is a story so what tense will it be in? the past tense but it has some dialogue so what tense is used there? the present. Its a story so what do we expect at the beginning? a beginning e.g. Once upon a time, some characters, a setting and a problem. Give them an example with gestures. Once upon a time, a beautiful princess lived in a castle Once they have got the idea, divide them into groups of three and tell them to decide which order they are going to do the miming and writing. N.B. They all have to mime and they all have to write once. Put up one (or more copies) of text 1 outside on the wall. Tell the students they have to move quietly in, around and out the classroom. Let them start. Go around assessing and helping only if a group really gets stuck. Stop them from shouting out answers. When one group has finished part one, put up part two in a different place and then part three. As groups finish they will finish at different times look at their written texts to make sure they have done it well enough (any rushed messes should be asked to try again), and ask them if the story is finished. No it is not, so they have to decide on an ending and write it down and decide how to mime it to the group in the same way we have been doing up until now. Get some /all of the groups to mime their endings for the class to guess.
