The Basic Concepts of Sewer Construction

There's little doubt that sewer construction has radically improved living conditions in the modern world. These networks of subsurface pipes gave us the comfort of indoor plumbing and eliminated the need for outhouses. Most people don't think about sewer construction until they experience a problem with a broken pipe or clogged sewer line. Even then, they don't consider the inner workings. Instead, they're on the phone calling a sewer contractor. Sewer construction involves the use of multiple methods to install and maintain the endless network of sewer pipes. Installation methods and construction materials have to be in compliance with Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. Construction projects can fall into one of five categories. These include: industrial, institutional, municipal, commercial, and residential. Each category requires different sizes of pipes and installation processes. For example, installing sewer lines in a residential community utilizes different methods than installing pipes for industrial facilities. A complete sewer system is referred to as sewerage. There are three types of sewerage which include sanitary, storm, and combined. Since these pipes transport raw sewage that is polluted with human waste, harmful bacteria and organisms, sewer pipes are separate from water pipeline. Septic tanks are a type of sewerage that is generally used in remote areas and rural communities. These are individual sewer systems that require the installation of septic tanks connected directly to the house via pipes. When rural areas are developed into residential communities, landowners are usually required to convert septic systems to public sewer lines. This can be costly because homeowners have to hire sewer contractors to connect to city lines, then drain and plug the septic tank.

The most common type of sewerage used in the United States is sanitary sewers. These networks of pipes carry industrial and household sewage waste to treatment plants. Several methods are used to filter and process wastewater into biodegradable products. Combined sewers transport sewage and storm water via a single pipe. Combined sewer systems are an efficient way to collect excess storm water and deliver it to discharge locations for immediate release to minimize flooding. A considerable amount of research and planning is performed during the design phase of sewer construction. One vitally important factor is calculating the precise flow rate of wastewater that will be generated in the community where the sewer system is to be setup. Exact flow rates are vital for assisting engineers in selecting the pipe sizes needed to satisfy the demands of the community. In advance of sewer construction, pipeline contractors utilize subsurface utility engineering to gather data about the worksite. SUE provides data regarding the exact location of existing pipes and utilities. After installed pipe coordinates are obtained, contractors clear and grade the land in preparation of trenching. Trenching is the most frequently used process of installing pipes, but other methods are used when pipes cannot be installed underground. Once installation is completed, pipes undergo testing for integrity and leakage. Afterward, contractors' backfill trenches and restore the land. It is always recommended to retain services of experienced sewer construction contractors regardless of the size of the job. Make certain contractors have sufficient insurance coverage and possess required work permits and licenses.
