Base Isolation The integrity of a structure can be protected from the attack of severe earthquakes either through the concept of resistance or isolation. In designing a structure by resistance, all the members of a structure are designed with sufficient size to take the load elastically and allowed to undergo in the inelastic range with sufficient ductility. Such approach can prevent the collapse of the structure but not the damage i.e. the structure rendered to be unsafe after earthquake. Water proofing Membranes made of bituminous material provides good water-proofing to roofs and terraces. Also Specialized waterproofing chemicals with nano compounds in it enhances the efficacy of certain chemicals in waterproofing applications.

Fiber Wrapping
A Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composite is defined as a polymer (plastic) matrix, either thermoset or thermoplastic, that is reinforced (combined) with a fibre or other reinforcing material with a sufficient aspect ratio(length to thickness) to provide a discernable reinforcing function in one or more directions. There are several situations in which a civil structure would require strengthening or rehabilitation due to lack of strength, stiffness, ductility and durability. Some common situations where a structure needs strengthening during its lifespan are Application Method Surface Preparation Surface is chipped to remove all loose concrete. Major cracks are injected with epoxy mortar & corroded steel is treated with Anti- corrosion treatment. The surface is then re-profiled. Any surface irregularities are removed. Primer Coat A low viscosity epoxy primer is applied with a brush to promote adhesion between FRP and concrete surface. Surface Leveling After primer application the surface is checked again for local irregularities and unevenness. This is then filled with putty to make it even. Fiber Application Fiber is cut to measured length. In large projects fiber is saturated with epoxy using wet- layup machine and applied to surface. For shorter lengths the epoxy is applied manually and then applied to surface. Rollers are used to remove any bubbles formed and make the fiber adhere to the surface properly. Anchoring fiber wraps Fiber anchors are put in the drilled area where the fiber wrap overlaps so that it does not peel or loosen up from ends. Quality assurance During curing time, the fabric is checked regularly for any irregularities or bubbles which are removed. Finishing After curing a second coat of epoxy adhesive is applied and sand sprinkling is done to make it rough so that plastering can be done to keep the fiber wrap system enclosed and has a long life.

SERVICES
Pre-Stressing
The pre- stressing of Carbon-Fiber laminate is a very effective way of using the high Tensile strength property to much greater extend. External prestressing with other materials of the existing structures have always been difficult especially in view of the materials to be used, reinforcement corrosion, lateral instability, end anchorages and ofcourse space constraints. The advantages of resistance to corrosion and high specific strength make these materials ideal for reinforcing existing structures with minimum intrusion. Popular method adopted is bonding them adhesively to concrete structures. Application Method Surface Preparation and marking Surface is well grinded to make clean & even so that marking can be done easily and adhesive bonds strongly to the concrete. After which marking of laminate positions and marking of plate , machine area is done. Drilling and bolting After Marking, holes are drilled as per marking and High-Tension bolts are inserted for plate and clamp to be fixed. This should be perfect and very little error is allowed. Fixing of clamping device and alignment check First the clamping device is fixed just behind the plate area in the machine area with the help of L- Clamps. Final Alignment check and fixing of laminate Piston body and plate anre fixed and checked for alignment. After which the laminate is cut to the measured length and fixed in the clamping device at both ends. Plate and the piston body is fixed for process to start. Pre-Stressing The laminate is stretched according to the design requirements and is pre-determined. After sufficient load is given the adhesive is replenished between the laminate and concrete surface also the gaps which were developed after stretching are filled with additional adhesive. Dismantling of Pre-Stress Machinery Finally after applying pressure the laminate is kept in the stretched position for a day with the help of stoppers. This is done for the adhesive to get cured and hard. Hence, the laminate becomes active i.e. it starts supporting the structure(Beam and Slab) by giving a upward force to it.

Seismic retrofit according to current code requirements. Upgraded loading requirements; damage by accidents and environmental conditions. Initial design flaws Change of usage. Design Complete design of strengthening by using FRP composites are performed as per ACI (ACI110R), Euro Code (Ec8), CEB FIP (Bulletin14) and Japanese (JBDPA) guidelines. Testing Cube Testing is done extensively over cylindrical and rectangular cubes with fiber wrapped system and they show improved enhancement in their flextural and compressive strengths. For bonding strength of fiber wrap Pull-Off test is recommended which ensures the efficacy of fiber wrapping.

The Company has developed a system which easily and effectively makes it possible to Stress the carbon laminate to a designed load and bond it adhesively to the existing structure to transfer the load on itself to support the structure. Applications Restoring the Beam and slab load carrying capacity and also giving it more strength. RCC members strengthening.

SERVICES
Non-Prestressed Laminate System
Pre-Cured Carbon Fiber composites in the form of laminates, more popularly known as CFK laminates, is a new material used for external strengthening and retrofitting of RCC members. As laminates they have a very high tensile strength to weight ratio, around 8-9 times of steel, which makes it a very suitable material for providing extra strength and hence increasing the load bearing capacity of members. The most common form is Non Pre-Stressed laminates mounted on the surface of concrete. It increases the shear resistance and flexural strength. This near surface mounted technique is based on fixing, by epoxy adhesive , CFK laminates into pre-cut slits opened in the concrete cover of the lateral surface of beams and slabs. When more load is applied on the member slab or beam the laminates become active and share the load on themselves. Hence increasing the load which the member can take. At the ends of laminate anc hor plates, called non Pre-Stressing Plates, are fixed with help of adhesive so that the laminates does not peel off the concrete surface in future. Application Method Surface Preparation and Marking Surface is very well grinded to Level the surface and make it clean. After which Marking of laminate and plates are done for proper positioning of laminate. If required Grooving is also done in cases of uneven surface or in case of laminates in both direction where overlapping Is happening. Preparation of end anchorage To fix the laminates at ends either a groove of 50 mm is prepared in the side wall or anchor plates are fixed at the ends. in case of fixing anchor plates, drilling and bolting of high tension bolts is done in the plate area. Cutting of laminate In a clean area away from the resins, the laminate is carefully measured and cut according to the length required. After which a layer of adhesive is prepared over the laminate for fixing it with surface. Fixing of laminate After putting adhesive on the laminate it is fixed on the surface and the ends are either put inside the groove prepared or anchor plates are fixed. Pressure is applied with the help of Rollers so that it is properly stretched and pasted on the

Grooved Laminate System
Often there are cases in which a rectangular column has an aspect ratio greater than 3 i.e. the longer side dimension is more than three times the dimension of that of the shorter side. It has been proved that fiber wrapping is most effective with circular column and is less with square and even lesser in rectangular columns. This reduction in effectiveness of fiber wrap increases with the aspect ratio. The square and rectangular columns are to be given a curvature at the edges. This is done so that the confinement is effective which sharp edges reduce. In case of rectangular columns confinement is further reduced due to different side lengths. If the aspect ratio is very high the column does not show any effect of increase in load carrying capacity achieved by confinement. This effect is taken care by partitioning the longer side into parts so that it behaves like a square column and give good confinement. The carbon fiber Laminates are put in grooved spaces which are 25-40 mm deep depending on what is desirable. This laminates which are grooved and put inside the column also give extra strength in terms of shear failures. Application Method Surface Preparation and marking Surface is very well grinded with grinding machine to make it smooth and easy to work on. parallel lines marking on the surface as per the length of laminate in equal spacing as per the design. Grooving For round Columns Grooves are done on the marked area to the depth specified in design. It is done keeping the width and thickness of laminates in mind. For rectangular columns Each face of the column is marked according to its width. It is then grooved to depth specified in design. Primer Application and finishing Adhesion between the fiber wrap and the column, and also to alienate the the fiber wrap, a low viscosity Epoxy Primer is applied with a roller until the column surface is locally saturated. The bad and uneven sectors are corrected and leveled with the help of putty. Cutting and fixing of laminate In a clean area away from any chemical, the laminate is carefully measured and cut to the required length. Adhesive is applied on both sides of the laminate it is inserted inside the groove and is further pushed properly by rollers. Finishing Finally after inserting Laminates the column is further confined by means of fiber wrapping system throughout the length including junctions.

Column Pre-Stressing
It is an innovative technique for retrofitting of columns and joints of a RCC structure. It involves confining of column with Carbon/ Epoxy or Aramid/ Epoxy composites. Moreover these confinement belts are Pre-Stressed before application which changes a lot of things as compared to traditional confinement with Fiber Wrapping. This Pre-Stressing has a lot of added advantages. Pre-Stressing allows us to use the Superior Properties of FRP composites to a much greater extent. The difference lies in Active Confinement and Passive Confinement. Active Confinement is done by confineing the column by pre-stressed FRP composites. Which starts taking loads while there is no extra load given to column. On the other hand Non-Stressed FRP composite becomes active i.e. takes load only when extra load is being applied on to the column. Active confinement is very useful for seismic retrofitting apart from other strengthening properties. Marking After Grinding Marking of of machine area which clamps the fiber and pre-stress it. It is crucial for proper fitting of machine and hydraulic jack, to perform stressing of the composite while application and to hold it in pre-stressed state till it is cured and load transfer has happened Primer Application Primer is applied to increase the adhesion and alienate the fiber wrap from the concrete moisture. It also makes the surface smooth and easy to work on. Fiber Application This step is crucial as it fulfils the importance of previous prepration steps. It involves fitting of machine and clamping of Fiber wrap with it. Hydraulic jack is attached to stress the Fiber Wrap composite. Pressure is applied through hydraulic jack attached manually. The fiber is stressed to the retrofit design load . Curing and Quality control For the next 24 hours the fiber is kept in the stretched position with the help of stoppers attached to the machine. Column is then constantly monitored for any misformation or undesirable behaviour. Anchor placement and finishing Fiber Anchors, specially designed to lock the overlapping area which completely removes any possibility of fiber to peel off the column, are put in the previously drilled holes and fixed using the Epoxy Saturant. Finally one more layer of epoxy is applied and then sand is sprinkled so that the system is permanently preserved inside and plastering done.

CPRI, Bangalore
Reactor Safety Division (RSD), BARC along with Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) Bangalore conducted a round robin exercise and theme meeting on pushover test on prototype Reinforced Concrete structure at CPRI Bangalore. The test was Asias largest pushover test and was one of its kind. The structure built was a replica of a substructure of an existing office building at BARC. The structure was tested till failure in the tower testing facility present in CPRI. This structure was then repaired and retrofitted using Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites (FRPC). The institutes/organizations who participated in the second phase of the exercise included, BARC, NPCIL, DCS&EM, IIT Bombay, IISc Bangalore, CPRI Bangalore, SERC Chennai, Thapar Institute of Technology Patiyala, UVCE Bangalore, IIIT Hyderabad, SIT Tumkur and PSN College of Engineering Tirunelveli, Sardar Patel College of Engineering, Mumbai. All the Materials used and fibre wrapping on the structure was taken care by R&M International at the site. In order to evaluate the fundamental frequency of the structure in the two directions, before commencing the pushover test, a free vibration test was conducted for the retrofitted structure. Highly sensitive accelerometers were placed at different floors to pick up the vibration signal generated by the blow of a hammer. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the signal gave the information on the fundamental frequency of the structure. The conclusions involved the effect of fiber wrapping on the structure. The fundamental frequency determination of the structure after rehabilitation with fiber wrapping and before pushover test in two directions were also carried out. The testing gave a insight about earthquake resistance of rehabilitation with fiber wrap and also it was shown that almost 100% of strength was gained back by Fiber wrapping on the damaged structure.

IIT Madras

JNPT

IIT Bombay, A Masters project

A project for fire and heat resistance for Glass fiber reinforced polymer on structural members was studied and ways to enhance it were found. It was found that a coat of vermaceal gives a retention time against fire much higher than a plastered FRP. All the materials and technical support in collaboration with IIT Bombay professors was provided. This project successfully developed a system for making G-FRP resistant to fire for a much longer time so that it does not loose its stresngth and hence the structure becomes more resistance to fire damages.

In collaboration with Sardar Patel college of Engineering, tests and instrumentation was carried out in the three spans of the JNPT bridge at Karal. Different NDT tests were carried out and sensors were installed at various loacations to asses effect of rehabilitation. Following is the detail NDT tests consisted of Rebound Hammer test and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity test to assess the quality and durability of concrete present. Measurement of deflection using linear Potentiometers mounted at the center of bridge at the bottom face. Measurement of Flexural Strains and shear strains with foil type strain gauges mounted at centre of girder at bottom face and at the end at an angle of 45 deg. Measurement of change in crack-width using omega type displacement transducers. Which were tested on full capacity loading. Measurement of vibrations before and after strengthening by piezoelectric accelerometer and full load moving truck to induce vibration according to IS codes. The results have shown reduction in strains and vibrations hence showing the effect of strengthening.

All types of fibers were studied for their effectiveness in confining by fiber-wrapping technique. This was a comprehensive study which involved testing various variants of fibers with their thickness and number of layers varying. For achieving the objective different cube samples were prepared. These samples were then tested for compresive and flexural strength. The results gave us the capabilities and limitations of our services so that it can be further developed and used for betterment of the technique.

SHM Stands for Structural Health Monitoring. Structural health monitoring (SHM) in general sense is a process aimed at providing accurate and timely information about the condition and performance of a Structure. It can be either short term ( eg. repairs efficacy) or a long term (monitoring parameters continuously or periodically) process . A need for SHM arises with the fact that properties of both concrete and steel depend on large number of factors which are often hard to predict in practice. The representative parameters selected for health monitoring of a structure in general can be of mechanical, physical and chemical in nature. Critical buildings (or Lifeline Structures, as they are also called) like hospitals, schools, power plants etc and buildings with large public gatherings like sports arenas, stadiums, commercial buildings, are something which couldan cause harm to large amount of people at a time and are something to be taken care on a regular basis, if they suffer any damage due to any calamity, either natural or manmade.
