Students Say
"The only really common feature to Bryn Mawr women is an intense commitment to our studies. Other than that,
everyone here really does her own thing," students agree. Even so, they see some dominant strains within their
ranks; they detect, for example, a strong contingent of women who are "preppy, liberal, and open to homosexuality.
Because it is an all-women school, there are a lot of gay students, and those who aren't gay are accepting of the
gay community." There are also conspicuous minorities of "high school misfits who come here to fit in, as well as
students who take Harry Potter a little too seriously. They wear capes every day." Women here agree that "the
community is overwhelmingly liberal politically, and the more moderate or conservative approaches or viewpoints of
an issue can get lost in the majority at times. It would be nice to see more diversity of political opinion at Bryn
Mawr." Otherwise, Bryn Mawr students "run the gamut from the well-groomed New Jersey girl, to the vegan Girl
Scout, to the hairy rugby player."
"In order to excel at Bryn Mawr, you need to be willing to do more work than you've ever done in your life,"
undergrads at this small, prestigious women's college warn. Most are willing, in fact. They "challenge themselves,
always doing their individual best" to meet the demands of the school's "insanely rigorous, but rewarding,
academics." Why? One student writes, "I feel that the hours and hours of work are worthwhile. The students know
that their work isn't just busy work and that there are high standards; that pushes us to improve and learn in a way
that wouldn't otherwise be possible." Bryn Mawr's "great track record for sending students to medical school" attests
to the success of the school's approach; students' devotion to the school does likewise. Undergrads here especially
appreciate the important role they play in running the school. One student explains, "With the oldest self-governing
association in the entire country, Bryn Mawr prides itself on the close communication between everyone in the
community, from the president of the college to the incoming freshmen, each year." A student-administered honor
code, one of the school's many treasured traditions, "makes taking final exams incredibly easy. Almost all exams
are self-scheduled, so you can take them when you're ready, not when they're assigned." Additionally, "the student
curriculum committee is very active in fulfilling the students' needs and desires for the academic process."
Academic partnerships with Haverford, Swarthmore, and Penn heavily supplement the "sometimes pitiful course
selection" here.
"Because Bryn Mawr is all women, the social life is different from the traditional college experience," students here
explain. "When you're a freshman, traditions like Lantern Night, Hell Week, and Parade Night really make you feel
like a part of the sisterhood' of Bryn Mawr." Undergrads also point out that except for the aforementioned traditions,
"you really have to go off campus if you want to party. Fortunately there are so many colleges in such close
proximity, including Villanova, Haverford, Swarthmore, and Penn, that you can always go out to a party if you want
to, and you get to come home to a clean and quiet dorm." Many here report that "we spend most weekends in
Philadelphia." For those who stick around campus on weekends, activities "usually include watching a movie and
ordering out or going to some campus activity." The surrounding town, students agree, "is pretty boring." On a more
positive note, "the campus is gorgeous. Imagine a Welsh castle," one undergrad suggests.

Visiting Campus
Visiting Bryn Mawr
Transportation:
Philadelphia International Airport is 20 miles from campus. Taxis, limousines, and trains are
available. No advance arrangements are needed for a taxi. For limousine service, call Main Line
Airport Service at 610-525-0513 (or 800-427-3464 in PA) for information and reservations, or use
the courtesy phone at the airport (push Main Line). If you want to use the trains, take the airport
shuttle from the airport (it leaves every 20 minutes) to 30th St. Station in Philadelphia. From 30th
St., take the SEPTA R-5 train to Bryn Mawr (leaves approximately every half hour). Amtrak trains
and Greyhound buses serve Philadelphia from all over the country. Take the Amtrak train to 30th
St. Station in Philadelphia. From 30th St., take SEPTA commuter train R-5 (Paoli Local or Bryn
Mawr Local, which goes from Lansdale and Doylestown to Downingtown and Paoli) to Bryn Mawr;
the R-5 takes approximately 18 minutes to reach Bryn Mawr. The campus is a 5-minute walk from
the station; walk straight ahead (on Morris Avenue) as you get off the train. After 2 blocks, turn
left on Yarrow St.; the college stretches to your right and straight ahead. Bennett Taxi Service can
be called on a direct phone line from the Bryn Mawr train station if you don't want to walk. If you
want to call Bennett in advance, the number is 610-525-1770. From the Greyhound Bus terminal,
walk to the Market East train station and take the SEPTA R-5 train to Bryn Mawr (see preceding
directions).
Driving instructions:
From Center City Philadelphia Take I-76 west (Schuykill Expressway) to the City Avenue exit 339
(Route 1 South). Once on City Avenue, travel about 2.5 miles and turn right onto Lancaster
Avenue (Route 30 West). Travel about 4 miles to reach the center of Bryn Mawr. Turn right onto
Morris Avene; a gas station will be on your right and a Starbucks on your left. Follow Morris
Avenue as it curves left under the train-track bridge then bears right. Cross Montgomery Avenue
(at the traffic light). The Benham Gateway, which houses the Office of Admissions, is located on
the corner of Morris Avenue and Yarrow Street . The driveway entrance is on Morris Avenue and
ample visitor parking is available. Distance from turnpike to the College: under 7 miles. Driving
time: approximately 10-15 minutes.
