HABITS

Match the following sentences (a-f) with the structure used (I. VI.) and its use (1.-6.): a) I hardly ever go to the theater. b) I dont like Rachel as shes always asking questions. c) Well sit out on the porch for hours just talking. Hed spend the entire day skiing. d) When I was a small girl, I used to live in Africa with my parents. e) I could never eat olives but now I am finally used to them. f) Now that we moved to the Czech Republic, my husband is slowly getting used to the culture here.

BE USED TO + Noun / -ing Present Continuous GET USED TO + Noun / -ing Present Tense + Adverbs of frequency USED TO + Infinitive WILL & WOULD

1. To express a past action or state 2. To express an action that was difficult, strange or unusual before but it is no longer so I am ok and familiar with it now. 3. To express a habit which happens often and maybe unexpectedly, more than usual and may even be annoying (criticism) 4. To express typical behavior both pleasant and unpleasant habits 5. To express the process of change from an unusual and unfamiliar situation to a familiar and usual one. 6. To state a habit using an adverb of frequency

1) PRESENT SIMPLE + Adverbs of Frequency Adverbs of frequency:

We rarely go to eat out. Peter very often writes his homework right before class starts. They sometimes visit us at the lake. Rewrite this sentence with a different position of the adverb: ___________________________________________________________ 2) PRESENT CONTINUOUS - to express a a habit which happens often and maybe unexpectedly and more than usual: I like Sarah shes always bringing me presents. to express criticism, annoying behavior I dont like Jessica. 3) WILL & WOULD + Infintive - to express typical behavior, both pleasant and unpleasant Shell come into the house and make a terrible mess! Hed listen behind the door and then tell our parents everything he heard. (Not to be used to express a state: Shed live in a big house.) 4) USED TO + Infinitive - to express a one-time past action or state When I was little, I used to drink a lot of milk. Question: ___________________________________________________ Negative: ___________________________________________________ 5) BE USED TO + Noun / -ing - to express an action that was difficult, unfamiliar or unusual in the past but now it if different I am now OK and familiar with it: I couldnt stand the smell or coffee roasting but now that my husband does it every weekend, I am used to it. I am now used to taking public transportation before, I used to have a car but now I dont. 6) GET USED TO + Noun / -ing - to express the process of change from unfamiliar to familiar My husband does not speak Czech but he is finally getting used to shopping on his own. The dog was almost getting used to the little girl when she accidentally kicked it and the dog became scared of her again. I am sure she will get used to living in England it is not that different.
