This chapter describes the precautions in working, and the jig and tapes to use.

1.1 Overview
1. 概要

1.1 Overview

The tape splicing is a system that enables you to supply components to the modular placement
machine without stopping the machine; no more do you need to stop the machine to change
feeders whenever components run out.
To supply components, pull out only a tape reel before components run out, then splice tapes.
After splicing, put the tape reel back into the rack to complete the work.
The tape splicing improves the operating rate, quality, and workability of the placement machine
greatly.
For the component tape of 12 mm wide or over, you can also use the chip pocket overlapping
method instead of using the crimping jig. This method is easy and offers the greatest joint
strength; in some cases, however, it cannot be used. For details, see ‘2.3 Tape of 12–72
mm Wide (Chip Pocket Overlapping Method).’
Moreover, when you use the tape with the joint detection mechanism and the applicable feeder,
the placement machine will tell you the timing of supplying components.

1.3 Selecting the Splicing Methods

1.3 Selecting the Splicing Methods

splicing methods.

Affix the dedicated adhesive tape (the splicing tape) to carrier tapes and top tapes.

menda- and Affixing the splicing tape
tion 1 Crimp the crimping hardware to join carrier tapes.

Recom- Combination of Overlapping the chip pockets

menda- and Affixing the splicing tape
tion 2 Join carrier tapes by overlapping the chip pockets.
Priority Affix the dedicated adhesive tape (the splicing tape) to carrier tapes and top tapes.
This is easy and offers the greatest joint strength; in the following cases, however, it cannot
be used.

1. The overlapping method does not go well owing to the boss shapes of carrier tapes.
2. The total thickness of overlaid tapes exceeds 15 mm.
3. Since the chip pocket is deformed, an encapsulated chip does not fit in there.

1.4 Types of Splicing Tape (Joint Tape)

1.4 Types of Splicing Tape (Joint Tape)

∗ There are two types of splicing tape (joint tape): one is the blue tape to be used when the joint
detection sensor is not installed, and another is the black tape to be used when the joint
detection sensor is installed. And each one has some types according to the width of the tapes
to be spliced.

1.5 Empty Section at Joint

1.5 Empty Section at Joint

For the 8 mm tape, the joint where component tapes are spliced requires an empty
(no-chips-encapsulated) section. This prevents the following problems.
For the 12 mm-wide-or-over tape, however, it is not required.

• Ill pick-up posture owing to the pick-up position displacement at the joint
• Post-mounting θ displacement derived from the above
• Chips drop off or are turned upside down because too much top tape is peeled off at the joint.
• Worsened pick-up errors, or the rupture or ill transport of top tape derived from the above

The empty section length at the joint should be prepared as follows.

— For the 8 mm-wide tape, the empty section equivalent to 6–9 components is required on new tape.
— For 12 mm-wide-or-over tape, no empty section is needed.

1.6 Crimping Jig

1.6 Crimping Jig

Locking the crimping jig

TASP-008P

To fasten the crimping jig onto a workbench, use lock holes .

The mounting hole diameter is φ4.3 and the pitch is 37. Use M4 bolts to fasten it securely.

TASP-015P

State in which it is fastened to the splicing jig truck.

Unlocking the handle ratchet

TASP-007P

The handle has a ratchet to prevent insufficient crimping.

If you stop crimping, turn the ratchet inside the handle in the direction of the arrow.
If it is hard to turn the ratchet, close the handle a little, then turn it.

Page 1-10 TASP-E-OMA01-A01-01

1.6 Crimping Jig

Crimping jig precautions

1. For the 8 mm-wide paper tape and embossed tape, use the same coupling method.

2. For the 32 mm-wide-or-over tape (both-side sending type), also crimp the other side.
∗ When the splicing jig truck is used, do as follows:
crimp one side, detach the tape from the crimping jig, rotate this 180°, and crimp the other side.

TASP-016P TASP-017P

3. Depending on the splicing condition, tape sending trouble or take-up trouble might occur, or the
pick-up rate might lower.

4. Take care not to pinch your fingers in the crimping jig.

∗ For information about crimping, also see ‘1.6 Crimping Jig.’

NOTICE
Overlapping, gap, or out-of-pitch, at the joint between the current tape in the feeder
and the new tape, should be avoided. Poor splicing condition may cause tape
sending trouble or take-up trouble, or may lower the pick-up rate.

∗ For 24 mm-wide tape, do not fold it along the

perforations.

∗ For 24 mm-wide tape, apply the contacting

plate to the right sprocket-hole side (against
the tape-feed direction) in order for
positioning, and then affix the joint tape to the
top face of the top tape.

4. Affix and wind the joint tape around

the carrier tape, then press that against

6. Affix the supplementary tape torn off in

step 1.

∗ For 24 mm-wide tape, affix to the reverse

2.3 Tape of 12–72 mm Wide (Chip Pocket Overlapping Method)

2.3 Tape of 12–72 mm Wide (Chip Pocket Overlapping Method)

This section describes the procedure for joining the 12–72 mm-wide carrier tapes and top tapes
with the chip pocket overlapping method and the dedicated splicing tape (joint tape).
This is easy and offers the greatest joint strength; in the following cases, however, it cannot be
used.

1. The overlapping method does not go well owing to the boss shapes of carrier tapes. (Fig. 1)
2. The total thickness of overlaid tapes exceeds 15 mm. (Fig. 2)
3. Since the chip pocket is deformed, an encapsulated chip does not fit in there. (Fig. 3)

Outline of procedure

Cut off the end of tape. Overlap the chip pockets. Affix the joint tape.

2.3.1 Cutting off Tape

NOTICE
Carrier tape should be cut off at the center between chip pockets, from a direction
perpendicular (90°) to the tape length direction.

2.3 Tape of 12–72 mm Wide (Chip Pocket Overlapping Method)

1. Cut off the current tape at the boundary

between the chip section—containing
1 chips— and the empty section (the
center between chip pockets) on the rear
2 end.

tape is peeled off.

∗ Cut off the center between chip pockets

together with the carrier tape and the top tape.
