1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This chapter describes the precautions in working, and the jig and tapes to use.
1.1 Overview
The tape splicing is a system that enables you to supply components to the modular placement
machine without stopping the machine; no more do you need to stop the machine to change
feeders whenever components run out.
To supply components, pull out only a tape reel before components run out, then splice tapes.
After splicing, put the tape reel back into the rack to complete the work.
The tape splicing improves the operating rate, quality, and workability of the placement machine
greatly.
For the component tape of 12 mm wide or over, you can also use the chip pocket overlapping
method instead of using the crimping jig. This method is easy and offers the greatest joint
strength; in some cases, however, it cannot be used. For details, see ‘2.3 Tape of 12–72
mm Wide (Chip Pocket Overlapping Method).’
Moreover, when you use the tape with the joint detection mechanism and the applicable feeder,
the placement machine will tell you the timing of supplying components.

∗1 The splicing tape for 8 mm width must always be used in conjunction with the crimping
hardware.
∗2 For the 12 mm-wide-or-over embossed tape requiring the splicing tape for 12/16 mm wide
or 24/32/44/56/72 mm wide , you can also use the pocket overlapping method instead
of using the crimping hardware.
∗1 The splicing tape for 8 mm paper tape can also be used for the embossed tape.
Depending on the material of the embossed tape; however, some trouble such as top tape
poor-peeling might occur. And it must always be used in conjunction with the crimping
hardware.
∗2 For the splicing tape for 8 mm embossed tape , 12 mm wide , or 16 mm wide , you
can also use only the splicing tape for joining without using the crimping hardware.
Depending on the surface condition of component tape or on the weight of encapsulated
chips, however, the prescribed strength might not be obtained with the tape alone.
∗3 For the 12 mm-wide-or-over embossed tape requiring the splicing tape for 12 mm wide ,
16 mm wide , or 24/32/44/56/72 mm wide , you can also use the pocket overlapping
method instead of using the crimping hardware.

1.3 Selecting the Splicing Methods
There are three methods for splicing component tapes as follows. Select and combine the
splicing methods.
TASP-018E
TASP-024E
TASP-062E
∗ The following show the methods and the prioritized combinations.
1. The overlapping method does not go well owing to the boss shapes of carrier tapes.
2. The total thickness of overlaid tapes exceeds 15 mm.
3. Since the chip pocket is deformed, an encapsulated chip does not fit in there.
∗ There are two types of splicing tape (joint tape): one is the blue tape to be used when the joint
detection sensor is not installed, and another is the black tape to be used when the joint
detection sensor is installed. And each one has some types according to the width of the tapes
to be spliced.

∗ The splicing tape (the joint tape) for 24–72 mm wide, unlike the one for 12/16 mm wide, comes
with a supplementary tape to be affixed to the underside of component tapes or to be used for
reinforcing top tapes.

TASP-004E
How to use the splicing tape (the joint tape) for 24–72 mm wide
TASP-039E
For the 8 mm tape, the joint where component tapes are spliced requires an empty
(no-chips-encapsulated) section. This prevents the following problems.
For the 12 mm-wide-or-over tape, however, it is not required.
• Ill pick-up posture owing to the pick-up position displacement at the joint
• Post-mounting θ displacement derived from the above
• Chips drop off or are turned upside down because too much top tape is peeled off at the joint.
• Worsened pick-up errors, or the rupture or ill transport of top tape derived from the above
For the 8 mm-wide tape, the empty section equivalent to 6–9 components is required on new tape.
For 12 mm-wide-or-over tape, no empty section is needed.

2. For the 32 mm-wide-or-over tape (both-side sending type), also crimp the other side.
∗ When the splicing jig truck is used, do as follows:
crimp one side, detach the tape from the crimping jig, rotate this 180°, and crimp the other side.
TASP-016P TASP-017P
3. Depending on the splicing condition, tape sending trouble or take-up trouble might occur, or the
pick-up rate might lower.

NOTICE
Overlapping, gap, or out-of-pitch, at the joint between the current tape in the feeder
and the new tape, should be avoided. Poor splicing condition may cause tape
sending trouble or take-up trouble, or may lower the pick-up rate.

∗ There are two taping methods according to the presence or absence of the joint detection
mechanism; choose the applicable one from the following procedures.
NOTICE
The joint tape should be affixed equally to the current tape in the feeder and the new
tape. If it is affixed unequally, the joint may disengage.
