ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

DESCRIPTION:
As an environmental technician, you will operate, maintain, and repair environmental testing equipment. You may also monitor emissions and air quality, collect air and/or material samples, analyze data to determine actual and potential health risks.

Duties:
Conduct pollution surveys, collecting and analyzing samples such as air and ground water Review technical documents to ensure completeness and conformance to requirements Perform laboratory work such as logging numerical and visual observations, preparing and packaging samples, recording test results, and performing photo documentation Provide technical engineering support in the planning of projects, such as wastewater treatment plants, to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and policies Produce environmental assessment reports, tabulating data and preparing charts, graphs and sketches Work with customers to assess the environmental impact of proposed construction and to develop pollution prevention programs

SKILLs:
Ability to work as a team, communicating technical information in an organized manner Good oral and communication skills Ability to work within a timeline and deal with unexpected situations effectively

EDUCATION:
Completion of a three year college program in civil/environmental engineering technology or a closely related discipline is required for civil engineering technicians Certication in civil engineering/environmental technology or in a related led is available through provincial associations of engineering/applied science technologists and technicians and may be required for some positions

OVER THE NEXT 2 DECADES 40% OF NEW JOBS WILL BE IN SKILLED TRADES AND TECHNOLOGIES

SALARY: $31,000 to $51,000

The Environmental Technician program is designed to create well-trained and diversely skilled graduates who wish to pursue a career in the environmental industry. The job opportunities for a graduate of this program are plentiful on the provincial, national and global scale. A graduate from this program could choose to work in the eld, in a laboratory or in an ofce setting.

GETTING STARTED
THE FOLLOWING ARE 3 SIMPLE WAYS OF GETTING STARTED IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY:

You can begin by applying for a job directly in the Civil Construction Industry. Once you begin working with a Construction Company or Contractor you will quickly gain the necessary skills needed to advance yourself through in-house, work-as-you-learn training. You can enrol in a University, Community College or a Private Technical School to study and prepare yourself for a Career in Civil Construction. All of this information may be found through our website. You can get started through an apprenticeship program by combining on the job training with technical in-class training gaining experience and increased responsibility. You can work in the industry, get paid and work towards earning credits.
