The Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) has the following vacancy

PhD-Student "Optimisation of heat transfer in micro-flows" (V35.395)

at Energy Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands considers as the core of their activities design, realization and analysis of new products, processes and materials. Besides the basis of (solid and fluid) mechanics, materials, control and thermodynamics, parts of mathematics, physics, chemistry and computing science are important supporting tools. The field is explored by a combination of modeling using fundamental concepts and applied engineering and technology. Automotive Engineering Science and Micro- & Nano-Scale Engineering are important departemental themes. The Mechanical Engineering Department comprises about 1000 students and 250 staff members. The Section Energy Technology performs research on heat transfer and thermofluids engineering. One of the research topics is heat transfer in micro-flows. This heat transfer is, due to the laminar nature of micro-flows, inextricably linked with the geometry of Lagrangian fluid paths. This offers a way to optimize the heat transfer in micro-flows by manipulation of the fluid-path geometries via electro-hydrodynamic (EHD) flow forcing. Principal research objectives in this PhDproject are investigation of the fundamental connection between heat transfer and fluid-path geometries in micro-flows and application of insight thus attained for the optimization of micro heattransfer problems. To this end both numerical and experimental studies are to be carried out. Tasks The tasks of the PhD-candidate will include: numerical analysis of heat transfer in representative EHD-driven micro-flows in terms of the Lagrangian approach mentioned above; design and development of a laboratory set-up for experimental studies using micro-PIV (velocimetry) and micro-LIF (visualization and thermometry); performance of laboratory experiments for validation of the numerical analysis; dissemination of research results by presentation on international conferences and publication in scientific journals; contribution to the educational programme of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The research is intended to result in a doctoral degree. Requirements The ideal candidate is a recently graduated mechanical engineer or physicist with a strong affinity towards heat transfer and fluid flow. Proven experience with numerical simulations and laboratory experiments on fluid-dynamical problems as well as an enterprising attitude are essential. Appointment and Salary We offer: A challenging job in a dynamic and ambitious university A full-time employment for 4 years, with an intermediate evaluation after 1 year. A salary of 2000 per month (gross) in the first year, increasing to 2558 per month (gross) in the fourth year. Support with your personal development and career planning. Attractive secondary labour conditions (including excellent work facilities, child care, excellent sport facilities and a compensation for the production of the PhD thesis).
