OHIO PRIVATE INVESTMENT SURVEY 2008 - 2009 - 2010
The Ohio Department of Development annually compiles a database on announced business expansions and attractions. The database is gathered in a yearlong process of surveys of state agencies, chambers of commerce, and local development agencies. To be listed, the project has to meet one of the following three criteria: a) b) c) Investment minimum of $1,000,000, or Square footage of 20,000 or more, or Job creation of 50 or more.
The project, to be considered, needs to be classified as Manufacturing, Distribution, Office, or Research & Development. While projects take several years to complete, the project is generally credited to the year that it was first announced. Ohio's 2008, 2009, and 2010 databases were compiled from published reports appearing in Ohio newspapers and the F.W. Dodge Construction Reports. Further data were collected from the Ohio Department of Developments Office of Business Development and the twelve Economic Outreach Offices. The database is compiled and maintained by the Policy Research and Strategic Planning Office. The report lists the projects alphabetically by county within the twelve economic development regions of the state. Generally, the project is identified by the private-sector company that will be the tenant of the facility. The North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) is a numeric classification system that defines the operations of the company. The NEW category recognizes facilities (existing or new) on a site that is new to the company. Investment, jobs, and square footage numbers are listed as published in news releases by the companies. While not a census, this survey of private investment activity attempts to be as complete and comprehensive as possible. Projects from the 2010 list were submitted to Site Selection magazine, which annually ranks states based on the number of qualifying projects. State rankings usually are published in early March.
ANNUAL SUMMARIES
2010
The Ohio Department of Development identified 304 projects; Private investment totaled just under $4.8 billion; Job creation associated with the 304 projects totaled 16,341 when the projects are fully operational; Of the total, 183 projects involved manufacturing operations; and 51 of these projects had some form of international investment.
2009
The Ohio Department of Development identified 364 projects; Private investment totaled just over $3.4 billion; Job creation associated with the 364 projects totaled 16,768 when the projects are fully operational; Of the total, 211 projects involved manufacturing operations; and 37 of these projects had some form of international investment.
2008
The Ohio Department of Development identified 487 projects; Private investment totaled just over $11.5 billion; Job creation associated with the 487 projects totaled 27,486 when the projects are fully operational; Of the total, 255 projects involved manufacturing operations; and 59 of these projects had some form of international investment.
