Recyclables go from
household to reincarnation
Andy Nash believes in the reincarna-
tion of inanimate objects — specifically
plastic bottles, glass jars and aluminum
cans.
“Maybe a plastic bottle recycled
from Anna Maria Island has come back
to use — as the fiber to make a T-shirt,
a ski jacket or a carpet,” said Nash,
spokesperson with the American Recy-
cling Coalition.
Each of the Island communities
has a recycling program. Anna Maria
and Holmes Beach contract with Waste
Management Inc. for both recycling
and garbage removal. Bradenton Beach
operates its own recycling program in
concert with its garbage collection.
“We collect approximately 250,000
pounds of recyclable material per year,”
said Char Patterson, deputy director of
Bradenton Beach public works depart-
ment.
In Anna Maria, about 800 tons of
recyclable material is collected a year.
In Holmes Beach, Waste Manage-
ment collects about 1,550 tons a year.
“We recycle because No. 1 it is the
right thing to do and No. 2 it is the more
cost-effective thing to do,” said Waste
Management spokesperson Frank Brun-
ner.
The recycled amounts are tracked
because recyclables are a commodity.
“The vehicle goes across the scale
and we know,” Brunner said. “It’s
always important to be accountable. And
certainly today recyclables are what we
consider a commodity, not a refuse.”

The Islander newspaper will host a critter corral in front of the newspaper office from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. Prizes will be offered for
pets in the scariest, most original and silliest costumes, as well as pet-owner look-alikes. Contestants will gather in a corral outside the office,
5404 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, with registration beginning at 5 p.m. and judging scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Trail of Treats begins at 3:30 p.m. at the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce office with a kid’s costume contest and then a trick-or-treat-
ing adventure in downtown Holmes Beach. All trick or treaters are welcome to visit the corral and view the costumed animals.

The Anna Maria Island Cham-
ber of Commerce is revving up for
Bayfest, which again will feature a
classic car show, as well as some-
thing new to view — a motorcycle
show.
Anna Maria’s Pine Avenue will
be the site of the annual Island
Bayfest, set for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 18. Admission to the
festival is free.
In addition to the car and
motorcycle shows, the event will
feature numerous arts and crafts
displays, a Taste of the Island food
court, a children’s play area and
lots of entertainment.
Children can expect a variety of
amusements, including the possible
appearance of representatives from
the Tampa Bay Rays.
“ Th ey w i l l s o m e h o w b e
involved, whether they are here or
they give us some giveaways,” said
Bayfest organizer Cindy Thompson.
“They’ve participated in Bayfest
every year.”
For the music stage, the cham-
ber has booked five bands — Dr.
Dave Band, Koko Ray and the Soul
Providers, the Blues Alternators,
Highway 41 and Kettle of Fish.
“The music is always a high-
light,” Thompson said.
She added that so many qual-
ity bands applied, the chamber
decided to resume its Friday Fest
concerts in January, and continue
with the nighttime events every
other month.
“There are a lot of wonderful
bands out there,” Thompson said.
“But at Bayfest, there are just five
spaces from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.”

festival. It was never really designed
to be that. This a chamber event —
we are businesses supporting each
other.”
Thompson said about 20 food
vendors can be accommodated, so
additional applications are being
sought.
“Sometimes they even get in on
the day of the event,” she said.
