Barter

The poem Barter is written by Sara Teasdale. The poem is about how wonderful life is and compares life to different things, but people need to give something to get a lovely life. You can say that the poem is based on a manner of speech that we use in Sweden, that goes 'Nothing is for free'. The mood of this poem is happy but also a bit sad, there is figurative language and the form of the poem helps to divide the authors meaning and mood. It There are not many different figurative languages in this poem. However, the two first stanzas are metaphors and there are also some similes in the poem. The first stanza that states, 'And children's faces looking up. Holding wonder like a cup' is a simile that rhymes. This shows that kids in life are curious and want to try to new things. The second stanzas that includes the line, life has loveliness to sell; music like a curve of gold' shows that life is like music and gold. The author is trying to say that life is full of happiness and if you feel this happiness your life will be more interesting and fun. The mood of this poem is happy and also a bit sad. It is happy because the author writes happy things like 'All beautiful and splendid things.' And 'Eyes that love you arms that hold.' in the poem. These are happy lines because the words she uses are positive, love and beautiful are both positive words. However, the poem is also a bit sad because it talks about how much you could have done for love but that it is too late now. For example, Give all you have been or could be which means that the person needs to give everything they have-be nice, do good things, in order to have a good life-but it can be very hard to give up everything. If you really want this, you can do it. This is sad mood because it means that you might not have done you should have in order to have a good life. The structure of the poem is three stanzas. The first two stanzas are about how lovely your life is. The third stanza is about what you should have given for love and that it is too late now because it is hard to change what you have already done. Since there are three stanzas the poem means that two parts of your life you have done what you think is right but the last stanza, or the last part of your life, you have started to doubt how lovely your life really is. The rhymes in this poem goes AA for both the first and the second stanza. There are no rhymes in the third stanza. The reason why Sara Teasdale used rhymes in her poem is because it flows better. The message the poet is trying to convey is that life is beautiful but it comes with a cost. The mood is both positive and negative. The figurative languages are similes and metaphors. There are also rhymes and that helps the poet to convey her message. Sara Teasdales message is that love is wonderful but people need to trade for it and that is why it is called Barter.
