The Tutor

Dimitri was born in Greece but moved to Scotland in 1997. He remembers his first impressions were how wet this country was! Needless to say that his first impression of Scotland simply being one big puddle of dampness evaporated like dew drops in the morning sun as soon as he started visiting the highlands. He was totally overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of Northern Scotland and this, in return, led him to rediscover his fascination with photography. Like many other photographers he found that after starting a family he no longer had the time he needed to devote to photography, but this eventually began to change as his children grew up. After falling in love with the Scottish countryside he bought himself his first digital camera and this is where it all began. He is now shooting digital, medium and large format film depending on the situation. What is it that he likes so much about taking pictures of natural landscapes? He likes the feeling of being humbled by the beauty and majesty of locations. He also loves the quality of natural light as it touches every part of a scene, especially during the so called Golden hours. Does he have a favourite location? Not really. He is happy to be wherever there is beauty and that can be found all around him. Some of his work has been reproduced in the Daily Record and he has also had work published in a number of photography magazines and books including Outdoor Photography, Practical Photography, Amateur Photographer, Photoplus etc. He is currently writing articles every month for Landscape Photography Magazine and occasional articles in Outdoor Photography Magazine. In 2010 one of his images was commended in the Landscape photographer of the year competition and was included in the published book and also displayed at the National theatre on Londons South Bank. Dimitri enjoys his presentations to camera clubs around Scotland and they have been highly successful. He loves sharing his knowledge with other enthusiasts and this drove him to become a tutor and run Earths Beauty Tours.

Torridon & Wester Ross

15 Jan 2012 - 20 Jan 2012 Course price 850
The Torridon area of the Western Highlands is situated on the North / West coast of Scotland. The area is well known to photographers and countless visitors from around the world for what is considered to be some of the finest scenery in Europe. A 16,000-acre estate including some of Scotlands finest mountain scenery, comprising Liathach with its seven tops, Beinn Alligin and Beinn Eighe. The mountains, in addition to their scenic splendour, hold much of interest to geologists and naturalists. Beinn Eighe with its white quartzite upper reaches and its surprisingly complex and extensive topography is in my books as the most magnificent in Torridon. Of course its beauty comes very close to its westerly neighbour, Liathach. Who is this course for: For all beginners, intermediates and even advanced photographers, who want to improve or simply looking for new and adventurous places to photograph. What you should bring with you: Warm and weatherproof clothing and sturdy boots (also warm neoprene wellies) is a must as the weather in Torridon can be very unpredictable and harsh in January and the ground either boggy or freezing cold. All your photography gear (see faq) and a few prints or digital files of your previous work for constructive and honest feedback. What is included in the price: Five nights full board accommodation on a non sharing basis and with no single supplement. One to one and group tuition and all transport during the course. Lightroom tutorial on image processing, for those with not much knowledge on the subject. This will give you an idea on how to best present the beautiful images taken during the course. Also, screen presentations of Dimitri's own work and of your own images made in Torridon. Dimitri believes that feedback from the whole group, improves the way you see photography. Extensive technical notes to take with you and also, after course advice via phone/email. What is excluded: Cancellation insurance and transfers to and from venue (although pick-up and dropoff to and from Glasgow airport / railway station can be arranged). Course times: The course starts on Sunday 15 Jan at 5 pm and ends on Friday 20 Jan at 10 am. This course is rated as easy and all the walks are on almost flat ground and easily accessible so just a reasonable level of fitness will be required.

Inverpolly & Assynt

06 Feb 2012 - 12 Feb 2012 Course price 850
If remoteness, tranquility, total isolation and awe inspiring scenery is what you are after then this place comes on top of any other in my list of places in Scotland. The Inverpolly National Nature Reserve is a vast area of heather and grass moorland dotted with lochs and rocky peaks in the north-west of Scotland. As well as the moorland there are many bogs and patches of birch woodland on the valley slopes. With no roads and few tracks the area is very much a wilderness and receives relatively few visitors for a British nature reserve. Inverpolly just north of Ullapool is classic, with its iconic mountains like Stac Pollaidh and Suilven will provide a stunning backdrop to your pictures. This area is particularly rich for opportunities, with its mountains, lochs, beaches and seascapes, there is something for everyone. Who is this course for: For all beginners, intermediates and even advanced photographers, who want to improve or simply looking for new and adventurous places to photograph. What you should bring with you: Warm and weatherproof clothing and sturdy boots (also warm neoprene wellies) is a must as the weather can be very unpredictable and harsh and the ground either boggy or freezing cold. All your photography gear (see faq) and a few prints or digital files of your previous work for constructive and honest feedback. What is included in the price: Six nights full board accommodation on a non sharing basis and with no single supplement. One to one and group tuition and all transport during the course. Lightroom tutorial on image processing, for those with not much knowledge on the subject. This will give you an idea on how to best present the beautiful images taken during the course. Northumberland

20 Feb 2012 - 24 Feb 2012

Course price 695

Starting from Berwick-upon-Tweed, and ending our trip all the way south-east and around the castles of Warkworth and Edlingham, this proves to be one amazing journey. The area of Northumberland, with all its magical castles, magnificent beaches with sand, pebbles or weathered rocks, winding rivers, National Parks and vast moors or sand dunes, is definitely one of the most beautiful areas on the British isles. And only the idea of witnessing a sunrise by the feet of Bamburgh castle or Dunstanburgh castle, is enough to bring shivers to your spine. Northumberland was for centuries the scene of bitter border conflicts, and today it has more castles and peel towers than any other English county. These are the scars and reminders of that era. What is included in the price: Four nights full board accommodation on a non sharing basis and with no single supplement. One to one and group tuition and all transport during the course. Lightroom tutorial on image processing, for those with not much knowledge on the subject. This will give you an idea on how to best present the beautiful images taken during the course. Situated off the West coast of Mainland Scotland, the isle of Skye is the largest and best known of the Inner Hebrides. Sometimes referred to in Gaelic poetry and song as Eilean a Che (The Misty Isle), Skye is renown for its natural beauty, history and wildlife. The island has been occupied since the Mesolithic and has a colourful history including a time of Norse rule and a long period of domination by clans Leod and Donald. At 1,656 km (639 mi), Skye is the second-largest island in Scotland after Lewis and Harris. The coastline of Skye is a series of peninsulas and bays radiating out from a centre dominated by the Cuillin hills. The main peninsulas include Trotternish in the north, Waternish, Duirinish, Minginish and Strathaird to the west and Sleat in the south. Isle of Uist
19 Mar 2012 - 24 Mar 2012 Course price 795
Dramatic geological forces, combined with numerous ice ages and lately weather forces such as wind and rain, have all contributed in the creation of a chain of islands on the north west of Scotland known as Outer Hebrides or Western isles. This chain of islands stretches for more than 100 miles and is always in the mercy of the Atlantic Ocean. Here, we will concentrate on the central part of this chain, the part that includes the isles of Berneray, north Uist, Benbecula and south Uist. All these islands are connected with causeways. Boggy moors and craggy hills rule the east side of these islands and make access simply impossible in parts. In fact, its hard to tell whether the moorland is sprinkled with lochs or the sea is dotted with islands. What is included in the price: Five nights full board accommodation on a non sharing basis and with no single supplement. Return ferry transfers from Uig to Lochmaddy. Cornwall

16 Apr 2012 - 21 Apr 2012

Course price 795

In the last decade Cornwall has emerged as one of the worlds iconic destinations. From the dramatic coastline of the north to the sheltered bays in the south, from ancient moorland to soft river estuaries. Cornwall forms the tip of the south-west peninsula of the island of Great Britain, and is therefore exposed to the full force of the prevailing winds that blow in from the Atlantic Ocean. The coastline is composed mainly of resistant rocks that give rise in many places to impressive cliffs. It is those winds and waves that are constantly changing the look of the coast and the ever changing light, makes it a pleasure but also a great challenge, for every landscape photographer to capture its beauty. The north and south coasts have different characteristics. The north coast is more exposed and therefore has a wilder nature. The Isles of Lewis and Harris are at the North west corner of the group of Islands known as the Hebrides, or Western Isles. The Hebrides are known as the long islands as they stretch for 100 miles, with Lewis being the largest. Gaelic is spoken alongside English, and Eagles live alongside Otters and people. The contrast of the ages and cultures is experienced all over the isles of Lewis and Harris (both joined) both in the towns and out in the hills and mountains. The name of MacLeod (son of Leod) is seen regularly in the phone books and on the name boards of shops, and the ending of bost on the place names, giving witness to the Viking past of the Isles.

17 Oct 2011 - 21 Oct 2011 Course price 595
We all know of the beauty of Yorkshire dales and its famous national park, where millions of people visit each year. How about the Yorkshire coast though? Well, here we go. Lets start from the north/ east side and head south. Saltburn by the Sea has maintained much of its original charm as a Victorian seaside resort including its pier, the colourful Italian Gardens and walks through Riftswood. Saltburn has the oldest water balanced cliff tramway in Britain, linking the town with the pier 120 feet below. Heading south and along the coast, Staithes has all the charm of a place lost in time, this small North Yorkshire fishing village gives the appearance of having grown out of the cliffs, the villages of Staithes and Cowbar are divided in two by Staithes beck, a small river that has carved a route from the moors to the sea. Lake District
30 Oct 2011 - 04 Nov 2011 Course price 695
Millions of years in the making and still working its way forward. This has become one of the most breathtaking areas in the British Isles. And one has to remember that it was once considered as the ugliest one, because of its ruggedness. This glacial area is now the host of a great number of lakes and mountains. Thousands of acres of woodland that ever changes face with the mood of every season. The semi-natural woodlands add texture, colour and variety to the landscape and also provide a home for native animals and plants. The high rainfall in the core of the National Park favours woodlands rich in Atlantic mosses and liverworts, ferns and lichen.

Santorini

07 June 2011 - 14 June 2011

Course price 850

Santorini is one of the most magical islands of Greece. It is a barren, rocky island just opposite a volcano, with black and red beaches and towns situated on high cliffs offering breathtaking views and fantastic sunsets. Santorini has a dramatic beauty as opposed to lush and green islands. The volcano is still active, and the last eruption was in 1950, causing an earthquake that destroyed many villages on the island. The islands official name is Thira and its main town, Fira, is also the capital of the Cyclades islands.

Who is this course for: It does not really matter if you are a beginner or a well advanced photographer, you will find yourself that this island has something to offer for everyone. What you should bring with you: Mainly cool clothes as it gets lovely and warm during June. The temperature is usually between 20 - 30 Celcius however, a light jacket is some times necessary as during the evening it gets cooler. Light walking boots is also a good idea as there is uneven terrain to walk to. Your photography gear and a few prints or digital files of your previous work for constructive feedback and discussion within the group. What is included in the price: Seven nights accommodation, breakfast, lunch, transport to and from airport. One to one and group tuition and all transport during the course. Lightroom tutorial on image processing if needed and on one to one basis, for those with not much knowledge on the subject. Mykonos

01 July 2011 - 08 July 2011

Course price 950

This small and really barren Cycladic island, has always been concidered by ancient Greeks as the island of poverty. Not any more, not since the 70s anyway. I think films like Zorba the Greek, Shirley Valentine and visits there by Greek tycoons, have made the island the destination in the Med these days. Over a million people visit Mykonos every year, many of them Local and international celebrities. Besides the colourful hordes of people visiting however, Mykonos has remained very charming, always dressed in that white on blue Mediterranean colour and always bathed in sunshine and before you ask, we will visit Ag Ioannis, the film set for Shirley Valentine. Who is this course for: It does not really matter if you are a beginner or a well advanced photographer, you will find yourself that this island has something to offer for everyone. What you should bring with you: Mainly cool clothes as it gets lovely and warm during July. Corfu

Corfu is a piece of natures art. Green and fertile, with areas of unique beauty, from high ground to sea level. The Ionian sea with its beautiful colours and full of life, that has traveled the locals for thousands of years, with the mythical ships of Feakes and bringing it to the present years as we know it. Small and classic Greek villages, perched on the sides of the hills and surrounded by Cypress and Olive trees, resemble fairy tails from Greek mythology books. An old city with narrow lanes and washing lines connecting opposite houses, small shops that attract tourists and a few old forts, not to mention the countless bays around its coastline. Who is this course for: It does not really matter if you are a beginner or a well advanced photographer, you will find yourself that this island has something to offer for everyone. What you should bring with you: Mainly cool clothes as it stays lovely and warm at this time of year however, a light fleece is some times necessary as during the evening it gets cooler. Your photography gear and a few prints or digital files of your previous work for constructive feedback and discussion within the group. Entrance ticket to Achileon. One to one and group tuition and all transport during the course. Lightroom tutorial on image processing if needed and on one to one basis, for those with not much knowledge on the subject. This will give you an idea on how to best present the beautiful images taken during the course. Also, screen presentation of your own images made during the course. Dimitri believes that feedback from the whole group, improves the way you see photography. Extensive technical notes to take with you and also, after course advice via phone/email. What is excluded: Cancellation insurance, drinks and flights. FAQ
What kind of camera do I need for these tours? In order to take full advantage of the opportunities and techniques we will cover in our workshops, we would recommend an SLR camera. However, at the end of the day, our tours are not about the media used to capture the image but more like the way we see the scene and light that effects its mood. In a few words, any camera will do. This could be a consumer, prosumer, medium or large format, panoramic, digital or film. What other equipment will I need? Your camera comes first of course but most importantly we recommend a cable remote shutter release for your camera and a sturdy tripod, the reason for that is that a tripod allows you to take your time and concentrate on composition as well as keeping your camera shake free and the cable release helps for long exposures and bracketing. We also recommend (if you have them of course) a set of neutral density graduated filters of 1/2/3 stops of exposure compensation. Also a polariser or any other filters that you own. Of course if you have a camera bag that keeps your equipment dry and safe, please bring it with you. You dont have to have all the above extras of course but they will help you to gain the most out of your workshop/tour. How many people per group? Our aim is to deliver intensive and very helpful tours & workshops and the only way to achieve this is to keep the group as small as possible. The group size is up to 8 people per tutor. This way we can pay more attention to all members and make sure they go home with a much better understanding of the subject and as much experience gained as possible. What does the price cover? On every tour, there is specific information about what is included in the price and what is not. There are no hidden charges or any other add on, we like to be very clear on this. I am interested in a specific tour but it is unavailable. Some of the tours are popular hence they are fully booked as soon as they become available. If you would like to take part on one of them, send us an email via our contact link and we will add your name to the list for the next one. Then you will be the first to know about it. Insurance cover, why? We highly recommend that you obtain the appropriate travel insurance cover before you travel with us (whether abroad or in the UK). The insurance must cover the loss, expenses and damages arising from the cancellation of the holiday (whether in whole or in part). It should also cover personal accident, injury and medical costs as well as the loss of personal belongings and flight cancellations and delays. Earths beauty is not liable for all above.

Deposit, full price, what? We usually require a deposit of 100-200 per person at the time of booking. Then around eight weeks before the tour date we will ask (via email) for the outstanding balance. However, if you try to book a course within the last 8 weeks of it taking place, you will need to pay for the entire amount. What if there are 2 of us booking together? If two partners or simply two friends are willing to share a double room and we can save them money on accommodation, we will gladly do so. It all depends on the tour and the hotel we are staying of course. Please contact us as we might sort out a better deal, if you are thinking of bringing your other half with you. Do you usually visit well known areas? We visit some of the best areas around and to be more specific the prime locations of these areas and during the best times of day for the ultimate light available. We aim to give you a supreme experience of these landscapes and we always go the extra mile to make sure you leave the course with the most amazing memories and much more confidence on your photographic skills. Our own experience, research and organisation help us to achieve this. How strenuous are your tours? We usually care for all ages and for this we allow our tours to be comfortable for everyone however, if any of the tours require strenuous walks, it will be specified in the tour description. We try to keep on well developed and safe trails. Who can take part on these tours? Anyone with photography in mind or simply one that is just looking for new and exciting places to visit. As for photographers, anyone is welcome. A beginner for instance that is looking for some help and guidance or learning the photography techniques in general. A more advanced photographer who could do with some extra help and experience or even a well advanced photographer who is simply looking for new and unknown places to visit. How many memory cards or film will I need? Aaah, a very good question. You see, memory cards or film are never enough and our answer would be to get as much as you can. You need to remember that we will be shooting almost all day and if the tour is a long one especially, you will need as much as you can get. Digital users with a laptop or a memory bank will be fine, as long as you remember to bring it along. Having said that, we always try to pass on the theory of shoot less and take better care of those images. Better leave the course with 30 stunning images than 2000 very average ones, you get the point. Single occupancy? Of course. Unless otherwise stated in the details of a workshop, one participant occupies one room and that is without any surcharge.
