ORDER OF ADJECTIVES

We can call it as susunan kata sifat in Indonesian. It often happens that we use both types of adjectives (determiners and descriptive adjective) in one sequence to modify a noun. We should know that each type has its own pattern.

Order of Descriptive Adjectives

Descriptive Adjectives are divided into 2 large groups : natural quality (opinion) and physical state (size, age/temperature, participle, shape, color, origin/location, material, purpose).

Opinion
An opinion adjective explains what you think about something (other people may not agree with you). EX : beautiful, ugly, gorgeous, hard.

Size
A size adjective tells tou how big or how small something is. EX : huge, little, big, small.

Age/ Temperature
An Age adjective tells you how old or young something or someone is. EX : modern, young, old. A temperature adjective tells how cold or hot something is. EX :warm, cool.

Participle
EX : bored, repaired, broken.

Shape
A shape adjective describes the shape of something. EX : Round, circle, flat.

Color
A color adjective describes the color of something. EX : yellowish, black, white.

Origin/Location
An origin or a location adjective describes where something or someone comes from. EX : French, Germany, Japan, Greek.

Material
A material adjective describes what something is made from. EX : cotton, silk, paper.

Purpose
A purpose adjective describes what something is used for. These adjectives often end with ing. EX : frying pan, sleeping bag.

We need more than one descriptive adjective to modify a noun. We do it to give more detailed descriptions. For EX, saying the beautiful woman may no tell our listeners or the reader the exact description of the salesman. But by adding red-haired and young will give more detailed information to the picture we are trying to give to our listeners or readers. *The more descritive adjective we use to describe, the more exact description we give. However, it is very rare to use all the groups of adjectives in the descriptive adjectives to modify a single noun. *Generally, people use bot more than 3 adjectives. *We can always use as many adjectives as we want, but theres one thing which we should always keep in our mind : that whatever adjectives are used be placed in the proper order.
