The authors have undertaken the attempt to present the past, present and future of the iron-processing technique from the viewpoint of shift of interest of the steel market and the research from “better” (better coke, better sinter, better steel and better aggregates) through “better and cheaper” (coke saving ete.) to “better and cheaper and environmentally friendly” - in order to ensure a sustainable development. ‘The book is aimed at University students of metallurgy and materials ‘engineering. Some sections, operational and statistical data and numerous references could also be useful for lecturers and experts in research institutes and stee! industry. A Web-adapted version of the book is available at http://meveus.ichk.rwth- aachen.de as a component of the online course “Virtual Lab Ironmaking”.
