Jo coxes at national rowing titles
Jo Cripps, the daughter of Bill and Sally Cripps of Blackall, coxed two Brisbane club crews at the Australian rowing championships at Nagambie Lakes in Victoria recently. Jos main event was the under 17 womens coxed quad scull. She and her crew of Brisbane & GPS club rowers got as far as the semi nals, which they contested from an outside lane after a failure of timing equipment in their repechage gave them a poor lane draw. They were eliminated after coming third in a lane exposed to extreme crosswinds, but recorded the sixth fastest time of the semi nals and gained much respect for their effort from the rowing fraternity. Shortly afterwards ofcials cancelled racing and scheduled the rest of the days events as time trials to give all competitors an even chance. Jo also coxed a combined UQ/ Toowong/Commercial/Brisbane GPS under 19 womens eight, which was eliminated at the repechage stage. It was Jos rst experience of national competition. Throughout the week she had the chance to watch some of Australias elite rowers in action, including James Tomkins and Drew Ginn who paired up with Queenslanders Duncan Free and Sam Conrads to create a new Oarsome Foursome and win the mens coxless four at the championships. Olympic cox Michael Toon was also in action for the Toowong club during the week.

Three events were contested at the Blackall Clay Target Clubs monthly shoot on Sunday, March 11. The rst event was the 25 target double barrel off 15m in which K Harlow came rst with 25/25. D Isaac with 24/25 came in second while L Doonar 23/25, L Driver 23/25, L Marsh 23/25 all came in third. The second event for the day was the 25 target single barrel off 15m. W Dendle with 24/25 came rst and K Harlow 21/25, L Doonar 21/25, Max Driver 21/25 all came in second. J Webber 20/25 and L Driver 20/25 both came in third. The Clubs monthly trophy shoot a 25 target double barrel shoot off handicap was the third event, which L Driver won with 24/25 from 16m. In second place with 21/25 were L Doonar (19m), K Harlow (21m), D Isaac (17m) and J Webber (17m). Third place went to P Molle (17m) and W Dendle (15m), each taking 20 targets. Due to the Easter break the next shoot will be held on April 15 with a 9 am start. All 13 to 80-year-olds are welcome to attend.

Cattle spelling centre gets the green light

A cattle spelling and transhipment centre is now a reality for the Blackall saleyards following an announcement of $220,000 in federal funding by the Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott last week. The grant will go towards the overall cost of $420,000 to construct the centre, with the Blackall Shire Council contributing $200,000 to the project. The announcement of this funding is a big boost for our yards and for Blackall as a whole, said Blackall mayor Les Wheelhouse. We are already receiving enquiries from trucking rms from the north and the west so the demand is certainly there. The increased turnover is sure to bring extra business and revenue to the town. Mr Scott said the new yards would provide a high quality rest facility to reduce driver fatigue, which Blackall was ideally placed to supply, being on the national highway stock route servicing Mt Isa and Darwin. Further, once the centre is complete it will be better able to meet the new regulations for animal welfare.

Blackall housing market hot

House prices in Blackall have doubled in the last 12 months according to local solicitor Peter Skewes. A recent private sale realised $190 000 and a government house in Thistle Street was sold at auction last Saturday for $117 000. Mr Skewes said there were other houses on the market at present for $150 000. This trend was conrmed by Ray White Rural agent Virginia Minnis, who said that sales had been extremely hot for the last eight to ten months. Where sales in the past were at a rate of 1-2 houses a month, they are currently moving at 1-2 houses a week, she said. An average house price in recent years was $60-75 000 but the prices have slowly crept up to $85-120 000. Virginia said RWR only had two houses on the market at present and new listings were greatly sought after. She attributed the interest to a number of factors, including talk of mines going ahead in the Blackall area and people moving to buy their own home instead of renting. Mr Skewes thought people nearing retirement were inuencing the market as well. A house in Blackall is quite a cheap retirement base, he said. You can buy a house for much less than on the coast and use the rest of your money to travel. Blackall mayor Les Wheelhouse said it was good to see the rest of Australia acknowledging what he had known for many years that Blackall was a great place to live in. Id only be guessing but it looks as though people are preparing for retirement and moving here for lifestyle choices, and there may be some dealing going on as well, he said. Cr Wheelhouse said he had heard the mining speculation but the only activity he was aware of was exploration and development work in the Aramac/Alpha area. Mr Skewes said the rst thing mining ventures would do if they

were expanding into an area would be talk to council about infrastructure but he said that hadnt happened. Many people from mining areas are signing contracts though, from Nebo and central Queensland, but I dont think theyre speculators. He described the boom as very good for the town. Once houses get to a certain value, the value of the land goes up too and people subdivide their lots. Were starting to see that happen now. Mr Skewes was unsure where house prices would peak. In my time in business here Ive seen three booms when Denison Resources were talking of putting in an ammonium nitrate plant, when things were good in the wool industry in the early 90s, and the period when roo prices were very high for a while. Id still like to see more families coming, and we still need more employment options for people, he cautioned.

About 100 secondary students from as far north as Mornington Island and west to Mt Isa converged on the Blackall showgrounds for the North West touch football trials last Friday and Saturday. The carnival was the rst North West event in Blackall for a number of years. Hosted by Blackall State School, students attended from the Gulf, Mt Isa, Mid West and the Central West sporting districts. North West acting school sports ofcer Linda Ashburn said the trials were the best she had been to this year. The standard of play continues to improve and perhaps was best evidenced by the open boys selections where the decision on the make up of the team was not made until the nal round, Ms Ashburn said. She praised carnival organisers school principal Bobby Harding, HPE teacher John Gilmore and

registrar Deanne Richardson for their organisation and running of the trials. Without these people who tirelessly volunteer their time, students in the North West region would not have such fantastic opportunities to participate in school sport, she said. Mt Isa won the open and under 15 boys categories, while the Central West team took out the under 15 girls competition. Year 12 girl Megan Richardson has been selected to be part of the North West open girls team. Megan is a keen sportsperson and its good to see her go to the next level and test her ability against the best in the state, Mr Gilmore said. Local students taking on Central West representative duties at the carnival were Kyle Richardson, Matthew Wemyss, Bradley Hayes and John MacNamara for the open boys, Megan Richardson in

the open girls and Trent Harlow for the under 15 boys. Mr Harding, who lent his hand to refereeing, said he was very impressed with the behaviour of the students and the spirit in which they played the game. I would like to give special thanks to Tony Holloway for offering up his time for the school and refereeing over the two days, Mr Harding said. Visiting female players were accommodated at the Blackall Arts Centre on the Friday night while the boys stayed at the showgrounds. Year 11 students cooked up a barbecue on the Friday evening while the schools P&C provided breakfast and food during the Saturday. Blackall will now host the North West primary school league and netball trials in May.

Young Blackall rugby league player Jeffrey Russell is participating in a Brisbane Broncos Elite Player development program in Rockhampton. Jeff is the son of Peter and Ann Russell and is at school at St Brendans College in Yeppoon. He received an invitation to join the Broncos program at the start of the year. The invitation said that a skills coach and strength and conditioning coach would coordinate his physical and technical development as a rugby league player, designing a program to match his initial results, and providing diet and nutrition sessions too. Jeffs mother Ann said he had really enjoyed his rst training session. He said he picked up heaps and learnt a lot of new ball skills, she said. Jeff is also training for the Rockhampton schools competition due to start in term two, where he will play in the under 14s.

Hanson married in Blackall

Recent excerpts from Pauline Hansons soon-to-bereleased autobiography reveal that her rst marriage took place in Blackall in 1971. According to the segment taken from Untamed & Unashamed: The Autobiography published in the Sunday Mail on March 17, Ms Hanson was only 16 and pregnant when she was married to Walter Zagorski at the Presbyterian Church on January 2, 1971 by the Rev John Martin. The excerpt details a bus trip she made to Blackall to tell Walter of her pregnancy. When ooding between Charleville and Blackall prevented the bus from completing the journey, she was given a lift in a small plane. Her arrival this way surprised Walter, who had tried to drive to Charleville after nishing his night shift, to collect her. With the police alerted to Ms Hansons underage visit to Mr Zagorski by her parents, it was then cut short but they later consented to the couples marriage. Ms Hanson gave birth to the couples rst son, Tony Zagorski, later in 1971. Pauline and Walter on their wedding day.

Getting dirty for the environment

Overseas

-- by Greg Harse, Jesse Negus, Adan Wilson and Nicholas Kinsey

On Friday, March 2 Blackall State School students did their part in Clean Up Australia Day by cleaning up their own school. Prep to Year 12 classes were designated certain areas of the school to clean. Afterwards the students from Years 5, 6 and 7 weighed and analysed their rubbish. They had a total of 13 kilograms of rubbish including a large plank of wood found in the grounds. Students found the most common item to be the plastic straw wrappers from tetra juice drinks. Students enjoyed the afternoon, and one was overheard saying, This was fun! He went on to ask, Can we do this every day? Clean up Australia Day, which ofcially occurred on Sunday, March 4, gave the students a chance to make their school environment a better place to be. School principal, Mr Harding, on his return stated, I immediately recognised the school was cleaner. If we did not litter, the world would be a more beautiful place, he said. Hopefully next year the clean up will not have to be done as students will have kept the school clean.

Townhouse bursary for Haylee

Tambo student Haylee Ogden is the latest recipient of the Blackall Student Hostel Townhouse bursary. Haylee completed Year 10 at the Tambo State School in 2006 and is now in Year 11 at St Ursulas College in Toowoomba. She has been a very active member of the school community in Tambo, taking on the roles of school captain and chairperson of the student leadership team for the past two years. She was presented with School Leadership and Teamwork and Academic Achievement awards at her Presentation Night at the end of the year. Haylee will put the $2500 bursary towards the expenses involved in completing her secondary education. As there is no longer a boarding facility in my area, my parents and I decided it would be necessary for me to attend boarding school in Toowoomba, she said.

The bursary was established with surplus funds from the sale of Blackalls student hostel and was set up to assist students who need to live away from home to further their education. Haylee is focussing on becoming a teacher in rural areas of the state once she completes her schooling. She is already heavily involved in community life, having represented youth on the Tambo RADF committee and playing a major role in the towns commemorative services for Anzac and Remembrance Day over the past two years. She worked part time in a local business and received the Tambo shires Australia Day Young Citizen award in 2006. Haylee is a keen swimmer and triathlete, participating in the local Tambo Triathlon series as well as representing the region at state competition.
