Introduction

The construction industry consumes huge amounts of natural resources and produces a significant quantity of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Construction waste can be considered as one of the main factor that can give serious impact to the environment. High demands of the infrastructure projects implementation especially in the commercial buildings constructions and residential construction becomes the main reason most of the construction waste comes from this sector. Therefore, construction waste management indeed is a big and important issue that should be emphasize in Malaysian construction industry Most construction waste goes into landfills, increasing the burden on landfill loading and operation. Waste from sources such as solvents or chemically treated wood can result in soil and water pollution. Construction is facing enormous pressure to find ways to conserve and make best use of our increasingly scarce natural materials. Some materials can be recycled directly into the same product for re-use. Others can be reconstituted into other usable products. Unfortunately, recycling that requires reprocessing is not usually economically feasible unless a facility using recycled resources is located near the material source. Many construction waste materials that are still usable can be donated to non-profit organizations. This keeps the material out of the landfill and supports a good cause.

The most important step for recycling of construction waste is on-site separation. One way to do this is to reuse, reclaim or recycle materials, the major source of which is from demolitions. In the past, building regulations were confusing. But providing the materials are suitable for their intended purpose, there is no reason why you can't reclaim or recycle them in line with building regulations. Objectives of Assignment The objectives of this project are as follows:

To introduce basic awareness of waste and environmental stress To expose students to general construction material wastage e.g how , why and what are wasted on site To create the awareness relating environmental issues relating to construction issues, such as landfill, non degradable waste, water pollution, To create an understanding of the impact of non reusing or recycling construction waste To allow student to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of material life cycle and recycling creatively

Learning Outcomes

Produce a complete documentation and analysis of waste on construction sites Understand and analyse the reason why waste is produced on site Explain innovative and creative method that can be adopted in reducing and recycling wastes Create a creative and meaningful object from construction waste to demonstrate their awareness and appreciation of environment and people

Tasks - Methodology Waste should become an obsolete term in the construction industry. The professional in the industry itself should be aware of the impact of waste to the environments and respond to the issue by rethink lot of issues such as design, site management, procurement, specification and etc which will assist in contributing toward a sustain able development with zero are minimal waste. To do this, you will be required to understand the properties, characteristics, application and environmental profile of various common building materials. Research and document

Traditional uses of a material Survey and document on site how waste is generated on site. How much is wasted? Documentation should be in the form of data collection, pictures, sketches and written

Analyse and Explain

Why waste is produced on construction site The environmental impact of particular waste Possibilities and limitations of recycling that material

Outline The method or ways that waste can be avoided or reduced, reused or recycled in the construction industry. Identify possible innovative ways to recycle the material and the issues involved in such recycling. The discussion will include the life cycle for the material, how it is currently being recycled and how it could be creatively recycled. Produce Produce an object from construction waste that is creative, beautiful and an environmentally meaningful. The object should be able to create the sense of environmental awareness in a person/public-NOTHING IS CONSIDERED WASTE

Submission Requirement

To exhibit beautiful object, made only from construction waste (except for fixings, provided there is no off-gassing from the fixing materials) that can be transported by one person and will remain beautiful for at least 3 weeks outdoors (size of object A3 X A3). If you need to use a base for your object, you are to use A3 sized MDF board as you base. 2A3 size Presentation Board of your findings and innovative solution. You are encouraged to use digital media for your presentation as your ability to use such media is taken in to consideration in grading your work (inclusive of pictures of individual creative production).
