Some of these conditions affect their learning capacity and are the cause of absenteeism, school dropouts
and poor performance. The nutritional transition is characterized by a low consumption of fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, cereals and legumes. Added to this is a relatively high consumption of foods rich
in fats, sugars and salt, such as meats, refined grains and processed foods. These dietary characteristics
constitute a key factor that generates an increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity.
In the last 14 years, the consumption of vegetables and fruits has decreased 30%. Another key factor is the
decrease in physical activity of the population. All of this contributes to the genic obese environment that
currently exists; In Mexico, only 35% of people between 10 and 19 years of age are active. More than half of
teenagers spend 14 or more hours a week watching television, and a quarter of them spend up to three
hours a day on average. Among adolescents and young adults (12 to 29 years old) only 40% practice some
type of physical activity and sedentary lifestyle is greater in women than among men. Obesity is currently
considered a growing epidemic on a global scale. The phenomenon affects children and adults, and is
associated with the early appearance of chronic non-communicable diseases that previously seemed
exclusive to adults, but can even occur at an early age in life. Genetic alterations determine about 5% of the
causes of obesity, and the remaining 95% appear as a consequence of exogenous or nutritional factors,
favored by a genetic predisposition.
