Introduction
Brainstorm ‘animation’ who do they know, what have they seen, when did it start? In pairs think of
two possible ways of animating a person. (use a willing student as an ‘example’) Discuss with class

Main activity
Watch a selection of animations that illustrate a variety of techniques. Students to write notes on
techniques and narrative.
Discuss; What was unexpected? How are they made? What techniques identified?
In pairs storyboard one of the animations; break narrative down into 8 frames

Plenary
What ideas do students have?
How had their ideas changed and/or developed after watching the films?

Homework

Research either the animation they watched and chose to storyboard, or one of their own
choosing. Write analysis using specialist vocabulary.

LESSON 2

Introduction
Review the last lesson. Who can remember one of the narratives? How would an animator start to
plan a music video?
Main activity
1. In pairs storyboard one of the films they saw last lesson, preferable one they chose to write
about for homework. Break story into 8 frames. Show one of the films, did they get the sequence
right? How many scenes? What camera angles? How does the music relate to image?
2. Introduce project; in groups to make an animated music video for an imaginary or obscure band.
Write rules on the board. Divide into groups. Record list of group members. Each group to decide
what genre of music video they are to make? Who is their target audience? How can they be
original? What techniques do they want to use? Will they use their own music or found music.

Plenary
What have the students learnt? What will they need to do next?

Homework
Group to make or find I minute of music save on CD. Each student to fill a page in sketchbook
describing their ideas and listing tasks.

LESSON 3
Learning Objectives

Introduction
Review of project and homework. Play music from each group. Each group to tell class why they
have chosen that particular music, what kind of animation would be appropriate, what is their basic
narrative is. etc.
Main activity
Working individually each student to spend 15 minutes on a basic 8 frame storyboard. When
completed the groups rejoin to discuss each members ideas. The aim being to generate a number
of possible outcomes and to prevent one person dominating ideas. On a fresh sheet group work to
build a firmer storyboard, detailing scenes camera angles, techniques etc.
Plenary
One member for each group to discuss progress with the class. Input from other students invited
and noted. Potential difficulties discussed, are they being original etc etc

Homework
Each student to fill a page in sketchbook including the storyboard and detailing their chosen
narrative..

LESSON 4

Introduction
Review of project and homework. Play music from each group. Each group to tell class why they

Main activity
Working individually each student to spend 15 minutes on a basic 8 frame storyboard. When

and refining work as it progresses.

Introduction
Review of project. Introduce concept of collaborative working and decision making I context of
project. Remind students of the need to record all individual work for moderation.
Discussion on artwork, what order should you work in; background or main characters? Close up
shots etc. Reminder of different techniques. Aim for two techniques in each animation. How many
scenes? Aim for 6.
Main activity
Working in their groups students to decide tasks and who will do what. Individual students to
record in their own workjournals what they need to do, make, collect etc.
Some students will begin to make artwork.
Plenary
Potential difficulties discussed, are they working well in the groups, who is working hardest? Who
is being lazy? Are they keeping on task in relation to animating the music? Are they working to
their strengths?

Homework
Each student to work on individual tasks, collecting props materials etc

Introduction
Introduce equipment and use of. Remind of health and safety issues and risk.
Introduce concept of image capture and system of file management.
Ensure lighting adequate and consistent
Demonstrate image capture process; close up shots etc.
Main activity
If one rostrum; Students to take it in turns to film; First group to have access to equipment for the
remainder of this and 2 more consecutive lessons. However the students filming will need
supervision from a technician or teaching assistant.
**** Students not filming will spend this lesson completing workjournals.

Students not filming to be set alternative tasks *****

Main activity
If one rostrum; First group to have access to the equipment for this and next lesson.
**** Students not filming will spend these lessons on a either a series of alternative tasks to
reinforce the project ie ; Zeotrope, Flickerbook. Or another project for their coursework. If more
PC’s and cameras are available students could explore the editing software taking images a digital
still camera.
Repeat lessons 11 and 12 with each group in turn

***** At this stage progress of the project will depend on the availability of equipment. With 8
groups in class of 24 filming could potentially take a further 14 lessons. Two rostrums will halve this
and so on. Finding time off timetable will speed up the filming process.

LESSONS 12 and 13

work of others.

Technical Vocabulary

Introduction
Demonstrate software. Remind students of timings and synchronisation
Main activity
Each group to create a folder with another folder inside it called project_stills. Download still
images to this folder and keep them as numbered files to help sequence them correctly. Open
editing software, choose the PAL Video CD setting for project, browse to project_stills folder and
drop the images in turn onto Video Track 1 on the Timeline. Save your project to main folder.
Preview the movie and adjust timings if desired. Make a title frame and end credits. Add transitions
between scenes and any special effect that contributes to the narrative, but use only one at most.
Play the movie through and log timings for the soundtrack accurately to open this folder and drop
your sound files onto Audio Track 1 on the Timeline. Adjust the volume at appropriate points, or
add additional sound effects on Audio Track 2. Preview and edit the soundtrack. Save movie and
choose MPEG Video (*.mpg) as the file type,
