Retreat from the world

I have just spent a few days in retreat. According to freedictionary.com, the formal definition of retreat is the act or process of withdrawing, especially from something hazardous, formidable or unpleasant, or it is a place affording peace, quiet, privacy or security. I would guess in this situation both of these definitions apply to what I chose to do with four days of my life. I withdrew from the noise and stress and busyness of this world. I would guess we could call those hazardous or at least unpleasant and I was in a place that afforded peace, quiet, privacy and security. Our own homes might qualify, but I chose a hermitage at a spirituality center in Wisconsin. A friend went with me and each of us had our own little hut in the woods complete with bath, kitchen, fireplace and other furnishings. She is a published author and needed to spend some uninterrupted time writing. I wanted to ponder, meditate, paint, read, walk and just be. We met for dinner at 7 p.m. on each of the four days and other than that we did not see or interrupt each others privacy or time. I would guess you could call it a vacation, though my purpose was beyond the relaxation a vacation offers. It was to go inside, be still, be with nature, meditate and To FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 2C

My paintings are like my garden, explained a smiling Barbara Nehring. I take a lot of care of them in the beginning and then they just seem to take care of themselves. Getting things off to a good start are words to live by for a woman like Nehring, passionately involved in a myriad of pursuits. She is tall, elegant and articulate with a composed demeanor, high cheek bones and deep-set eyes. Her love of authentic Native American art is evidenced by the dramatic bead and quill necklace and Indian earrings that she wears. This is my favorite piece, she said, fondling the necklace. The jewelry creator is now deceased, but Nehring knows her story. She also knows many stories, histories and narratives of other local artists. Nehring is a Green Bay

native whose family summered at a cottage on the bay. Her love of water developed there, as did her love of art. She had a young neighbor who also enjoyed painting and had taken art classes. They painted together and Nehring picked up tips from her. I didnt learn all the rules, so Im not bound by them, she said. Nehring attended St. Norbert College in De Pere and met Harold, the man she was to marry. His family had ties to the North Woods and he took his young girlfriend (and her parents) for a visit. She immediately felt a deep connection and, after she and Harold were married, they moved to Land O Lakes. I really fell in love with this country, she said. Painting took a back seat as Nehring raised four children To ARTIST, Pg. 2C

and worked in the business, The Trading Post, they had purchased from her husbands aunt and uncle. This iconic store was first opened in 1920 and was enlarged and taken over by Gene and Cele Best in 1945. Nehrings husband had worked there in his youth. He and his bride took it over from the Bests in the spring of 1964. They had living quarters adjacent to the store, where they lived until 2006. The Nehrings spent five years adding on and remodeling the lake home on the Cisco Chain that they purchased from their aunt. Every detail has been lovingly designed to give the home the feel of a 1940s resort. The approach to the log house looks like a primordial forest, as it passes through a spacious stand of Eastern hemlocks. The property is on a point, surrounded by water and every window has a lake view. There is a special area in the living room for the grand piano Nehring loves. She plays piano, as well as handmade wooden flutes. The floors and walls display her beloved Navajo rugs. While not made by woodland Indians, this type of rug was originally brought to the North Woods by the early summer residents who wintered in the Southwest and saw the rugs as perfect decorative pieces for their summer retreats. While Nehring paints a variety of scenic vistas, she is best known for the paintings which depict North American Indian arts and crafts, particularly Ojibwa. These arts are real art, she said. A room in the Nehring home was specifically designed to be her studio. Paintings in all stages of development are propped up on easels and the floor. I work on one and then leave it for a while and go on to another, she said. People ask me how long it takes to do a painting and I give them the answer an old Indian friend gave me: as long as it takes. The studio is neat and organized, with a lake view that resembles a perfect painting. A small easel and paintbrush await the eager hand and imagination of a grandchild. Nehring saves her husbands old shirts to turn into smocks for any of the seven grandchildren who may want to join their grandmother in the creative process. My children came first when I was raising them, Nehring said. The first of Nehrings four children was a son, Todd, who is autistic. When he was little, he could not be diagnosed and Nehring joined the efforts of local schools and organizations to optimize her sons and other handicapped youths development. Northland Pines High School offered a special education program, but Nehring wondered, Where are these kids going to go when they are through with school? The Headwaters Regional Achievement Center, Headwaters Inc., was established and is now a sheltered workshop and day-care center. Headwaters Inc. is under the supervision of the Human Service Center of Forest, Vilas and Oneida counties, which provides services in three areas: developmental disabilities, alcoholism and drug abuse, and mental illness. Nehring served this organization for 21 years. I have loved every time in my life, Nehring said. I love being a parent. I love working. I love to write, paint and sing. When she was at St. Norbert, she worked in a catch- all job at the Green Bay Press Gazette. She was editor of her college newspaper. When she moved to Land O Lakes, she became the Land O Lakes correspondent to the Vilas County News-Review for a while. As her children grew, she was able to take more time for painting and benefited from classes in art given by Nicolet College in the Land O Lakes area. She also met artist Louise Engelbrecht, who encouraged her to try watercolors, as she had only worked in oil. Its wonderful to paint with other artists, she said. Every Tuesday I paint with Shirley Surges and Louise Engelbrecht. Louise walks around behind me to look at what Im doing and I feel my neck prickle. Stop! she says. I get too detailed and dont know when to quit. Nehring founded the Headwaters Art League with Dorothy Grems and Jeannine Kamper-Crowe. She also started Art Impressions, the popular art and craft show (always held the fourth Saturday in July in Land O Lakes) along with Grems, Eleanor Lapp, Bea Morgansen and Mickey Clesen. I am a passionate amateur artist and am so happy to be a part of these groups in the North Woods, Nehring added. I couldnt have done any of it without the support of my husband and our aunt, who worked for us at the Trading Post. She also is a member of the Artistree Gallery and the Wisconsin Regional Artists Association. Her latest love is the Northwoods Singers. The conductor is Pamalyn Lee and there are about 30 members. They perform three concerts a year with a wide variety of music. I love living in Land O Lakes and the North Woods, Nehring said. I am on a lot of committees and am passionate about keeping the North Woods alive. This is a community of wonderful volunteers and I love being one of them. Some of Nehrings paintings can be seen at the Three Lakes Center for the Arts in the Northwoods at 1760 Superior St. during October. Her work also is at Artistree Gallery and Trading Post Internationale, both in Land O Lakes. more. When is the last time you took four days to spend with yourself in nature? I usually do this often as it helps me keep my balance, but it had been two years since I took this time and space. Last fall I was not prepared to be alone as I adjusted to Bills absence and death. I am still adjusting and grieving but feel more solid about being alone with me. If you have never retreated from the everyday world of your life, you might consider doing it sometime soon. I retreat daily as I take time to be quiet, pray, read and meditate. But taking time away matters. At home, the phone interrupts us, the doorbell rings, tasks sit in

front of us. At a retreat center, the only thing one must do is be. I chose to bring my watercolors and some books. I left the laptop at home because I knew it would be a trap, as the Internet is a click away and that means the whole world I wanted to leave for a while would be at my fingertips. I did bring a phone but did not answer. It was for emergencies only. Retreats are times of evaluation, looking inside, and more. They are whatever you want them to be. In this case, I just wanted to be still and see what would happen. In a later column, I will share that with you. In the meantime, why not plan a retreat of your own and see for yourself? You can choose a self-led retreat or find one with a leader and structure. Either way, in my opinion, a retreat is essential to well-being.

Wildlife center completes busy summer

More than 20,000 tourists visited the Northwoods Wildlife Center (NWC), located in Minocqua, this past summer. NWC reported they were extremely busy with plenty of orphaned and injured animals this past spring and summer. Diane Chart, executive director of the center, said, Every day at the Northwoods Wildlife Center is an unexpected surprise. We never know what will be coming in, where we may need to go to rescue or how many visitors we will have to tour our facility. But, we are prepared and staffed for just about anything that comes our way. Carrie Canfield, assistant director of education and wildlife rehabilitation, manages the staffing needs for each season. Spring and summer are the busiest for us in terms of patients and visitors. In addition to our full-time staff of wildlife rehabilitators, we have 10 to 15 college interns during those seasons and a great team of dedicated volunteers, said Canfield. The NWC sponsors up to 20 college interns each year. The internship program is an 8- to 12-week program that provides students experience to enhance their education. The volunteers do everything from cage building and repair, feeding the 30 resident educational animals, administrative assistance, educational tours, transport, and just about anything else needed. Rehabilitators work around the clock to ensure baby animal are fed and cared for as they would have been in the wild. We see a significant increase of patients as the number of visitors to the area increases, said Mike Zielinski, a wildlife rehabilitator at the center. As more people are out enjoying the natural surroundings of the area, they encounter animals in need. According to NWC, the number of injured animals also increases during the summer, the majority from vehicles. Other injuries occur from fish hooks and garbage left behind, especially to animals such as loons and otters. The NWC is focused on educating the public on how best to handle wildlife situations they may encounter and creating an awareness to avoid injuries. Phone support for North Woods residents and visitors is provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week by NWC. For the public safety and the animals well being, NWC recommends calling the center before moving a wild animal. The trained staff at the NWC will rescue any animal in need. There are very few large wildlife rehabilitation centers in northern Wisconsin. We serve 22 counties and hundreds of communities. We put a lot of miles on, but that is what we do, its our business. Not only do we rescue throughout the area, we try very hard to ensure the animal is released back to its natural environment. This is also important for the ecological balance of the

When your hobby contains items with wing spans over 100 inches, some things will just not fit in your home. Paul Gerharts Eagle River basement is full of tools, kits and plane parts, so into other storage some things must go. Gerhart built rubberband-powered airplanes out of Popsicle sticks when he was 8 years old and was influenced by his father who built radiocontrolled airplanes. He taught himself how to fly models while in the military stationed in southern California. Since then, Gerhart and his father continue their hobby and find camaraderie with other modelers. His group, most of whom belong to the Academy of Model Aeronautics, currently meets on a grassy field north of Eagle River for local flyins. However, during winter months some members meet on nearby lakes. Extending their hobby into cold-weather months indicates a love of the sport. Noting that plane kits have changed in the past 30 years, Gerhart recalled, Wed buy a plan and a box of wood. Id glue, sand and add the covering to parts, then install the radio equipment. Many required more than 60 hours of assembly time. Nowadays, most kits

are sold nearly ready to fly, he said. Prebuilt kits have encouraged new people to enjoy the sport due to less time invested in building the model. Gerhart has built more than 60 radio-controlled models in his lifetime. He owns a variety of models, from a World War II plane with a 102-inch wing span, to an electric helicopter which weighs less than an ounce. Years ago, aircraft were exclusively gas run (fueled by GLO fuel which was alcohol based). Battery and motor technology have improved dramatically over the past five years. Battery life is longer, it takes up less space and is lighter, Gerhart stated. Aircraft, in general, have come a long way since the days of Buck Rogers. Parts are lighter and stronger, and vehicles fly faster. Many aircraft models are fashioned from those early days of air and space travel, others have been designed from military prowess. The Predator Drone is 30 feet long. Some people make models of it which are 6 feet. The military uses tiny craft powered with electric motors that fly over battlefields and contain cameras. We have similar models, Gerhart explained. Radio-controlled aircraft is limited only by imagination.

area, added Chart. Fall does not mean things slow down at the center. This is the time to repair cages, build new cages, do grounds improvement, prepare for next springs baby season, organize research projects and hire the next group of interns. In addition, the NWC education department provides educational programming to over 50 schools throughout northern Wisconsin. More than 10,000 people a year are edu-

cated through classroom programs, ITV programming and Community Association events. Schools, organizations or groups interested in a wildlife program may contact NWC. Fall/winter tour hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays at the center, located on Blumenstein Road in Minocqua. Local students to compete in conservation poster contest

Students from local schools are now preparing their posters for the 2011 Conservation Awareness Poster Contest sponsored by the Vilas County Land and Water Conservation Committee and Olson Memorial Library. The contest theme this year is Forests For People More Than You Can Imagine, connecting people to the forest. According to the committee, everyone has a connection to the trees in the forest that provide wood for homes, furniture, or cork for the center of baseballs. Trees help clean the air we breathe and play an important part in the lives of many farmers across the nation. Forest management yields useful products received from them as well as recreational opportunities such as hiking, hunting and bird or wildlife watching. The public is welcome to view the students posters at Olson Library in Eagle River starting Tuesday, Oct. 18. Three local professionals will evaluate the posters at the library Monday, Oct. 24. Criteria that the judges will look for will include relevance to the annual theme, originality, neatness, readability and accuracy of the conservation message. An art reception and award program will be held Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the library for all poster contest participants, their families and teachers. The awards program will begin at 6 p.m. First-place winners in each age division will receive a free art lesson with artist/biologist Terry Daulton of Mercer. First-place posters will move on to compete in the regional poster contest to be held in Wausau Thursday, Oct. 27. Vilas County students or teachers interested in additional information about the conservation poster contest may contact Carolyn Scholl, county conservationist with the Vilas County Land and Water Conservation Department, at (715) 479-3747.

Three hundred sixth-graders attend annual Positive Alternatives Conference

___________

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-REVIEW

Sixth-grade students from seven area schools recently arrived by bus to the St. Germain Park and Community Center to attend the seventh annual conference sponsored by the Positive Alternatives Coalition. The purpose of the conference is to expose students to activities in the community that do not involve alcohol or illicit drugs and help them to find positive alternatives. School districts represented were Arbor Vitae/Woodruff, Lac du Flambeau, Lakeland Union High School, Minocqua/Hazelhurst/Lake Tomahawk, Phelps, Northland Pines and North Lakeland. By 9 a.m., the 300 students had gathered at the park pavilion, received a breakfast bar and water bottle and divided

into 10 groups, each headed by a youth coalition volunteer and chaperones from the schools. After a brief orientation to the days activities by Vilas County Youth Development Agent Nancy Miller of the Vilas County UW-Extension, the groups began moving at halfhour intervals to stations scattered throughout the park and community center complex, including the St. Germain Fire Department. Activities presented to the students included sessions on outdoor activities such as fishing and archery, led by experts from the Department of Natural Resources. Every student had an opportunity to shoot arrows using a modern bow and learn about the sport of fishing and how to use a fly rod. The community center gymnasium was the site for a workshop on traditional American Indian powwow-style dancing, complete with drumming and

rattles, giving the students a chance to try a Johnny Cakes Dance led by volunteers from the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council in Lac du Flambeau. The fire department annex had a dozen exhibit tables with everything from raising worms for compost to learning to decipher paw prints of local animals. The St. Germain Old Guys demonstrated the renovation of a bright yellow 1939 Chevy pickup truck and a blue and silver flame-painted 1932 Ford street rod. On a more serious note, sessions were held using video examples on restorative justice and a workshop on alcohol and drug abuse. Nicolet Area Technical College representatives presented a break-out session focused on career choices and the importance of preparing for the future. Three representatives from Vilas County Teen Court held a

truth or consequences quiz which required students to guess the outcome of laws applying to juveniles. Volunteers from the St. Germain PrimeTimers packed 350 lunch bags with apples, chips and cookies and handed out a choice of beverages and hot dogs for each of the students and volunteers. Food was donated by Trigs and there were other donations.

HISTORY LESSON Historical interpreters re-enacted life during the fur trade era in the Great Lakes region last Friday and Saturday during a program on the grounds behind Rocking W Stables, just north of Northland Pines High School in Eagle River. While more than 500 students from area schools attended the site Friday, the program was open to the public Saturday. Those attending the program toured through 20 historically accurate sites which portrayed various aspects of life from 1600 to 1840. The sites depicted the lifestyles of Native Americans as well as European trappers, traders and cartographers. There also were exhibits featuring traditional clothing, cooking, sheep shearing, blacksmithing and long guns. The program was sponsored by a $25,000 donation from the Forest County Potawatomi Foundation, making the event free to all ages. --Staff Photos By JEAN FITZPATRICK

United Way begins fund drive

The Northwoods United Way recently kicked off its annual fund drive at YMCA of the Northwoods in Rhinelander. The organization has set its largest goal ever at $225,000. With the money raised this fall, the United Way will help fund 37 programs from 34 human service agencies in Vilas, Oneida and Forest counties. Northwoods United Way Executive Director Tracy Beckman explained, Within the past several years, many of our partner agencies have seen decreases in government funding. In conjunction, theyve seen increases in the use of their services. This is an ambitious goal but not one that cant be met with the help of our community, she stated. We all have to step in and help our local agencies continue to provide their needed services. United Way is the perfect way to help bridge the gap, she concluded.

Nicolet College classes offer late fall start

Nicolet Area Technical College announced that its not too late to start college classes this fall. Students may enroll in any one of several occupational, general education or university transfer courses that will begin in late October and November. These courses are perfect for anyone who wanted to start classes at the beginning of the semester but for whatever reason was unable to make that happen, said Rose Prunty, dean of the University Transfer Liberal Arts program at Nicolet College. These late-start classes are a great way for students to begin their college education, pick up additional credits that can count toward a degree theyve already started, or brush up on skills for future college classes, she said. Upcoming classes, which count toward a wide variety of degrees, and the dates they start include: written communication, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5 to 8 p.m., Oct. 24 to Dec. 19; music appreciation Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9:40 to 11:40 a.m. Oct. 25 to Dec. 21; psychology of human relations Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:50 to 3:50 p.m., Oct. 25 to Dec. 18; and introduction to college writing Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 to 9:50 a.m., Oct. 25 to Dec. 20. Classes also include prealgebra Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 to 11:50 a.m., Oct. 25 to Dec. 20; introduction to reading and study skills Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30 to 2:20 p.m., Oct. 25 to Dec. 20; and fundamentals of speech Tuesdays, 8 to 11 a.m., Nov. 1 to Dec. 20. This will be a hybrid class that will include classroom and online instruction. In addition to the above, Nicolet College will offer a series of Microsoft 2010 application courses that will meet Tuesdays from 4 to 7:30 p.m., Oct. 25 to Dec. 13. These occupational credit classes include beginning and intermediate Word; beginning, intermediate and advanced Excel; beginning and intermediate Access; and beginning and intermediate PowerPoint. For more information or to register, contact the Nicolet College welcome center at (715) 365-4493, 1-(800) 5443039, ext. 4493, or visit nicoletcollege.edu.

Oneida health department notes breast cancer month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, reminds the Oneida County Health Department. Since the program began in 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined, according to the Oneida County Health Department. The department noted that although this is exciting progress, there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection at all and others who do not get screening mammograms and clinical breast exams at regular intervals. If all women age 40 and older took advantage of early detection methods mammography plus clinical breast exam breast cancer death rates would drop much further, up to 30%, said Charlotte Ahrens, RN, BSN. The health department stated that annual mammograms cannot find every breast cancer and it is critical that women continue monthly breast self-exams, along with yearly examinations by their health-care provider. Quilting presentation set at center for the arts

Land O Lakes Area Artisans Inc. (LOLA) will host a lecture titled Quilts and the Art of Quilting with fiber artist Sandra Hodgman Friday, Oct. 21, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Land O Lakes Center for the Arts. A lifelong sewer and lover of fabrics of all kinds, Hodgman began quilting by making baby quilts for her children. After the children were grown, she continued to learn about fabrics, sewing and quilting. Hodgman expanded her knowledge by collecting antique quilts and quilt tops in the early 1980s. She has since taken numerous classes on antique fabrics and fabric restoration. She is now able to do appraisals of antique quilts and restores at least one per year. During the lecture, Hodgman will explain the art of quilting and how something made out of necessity became an expressive outlet and creative pastime for almost every household in America. She will display examples of antique quilts from her collection. Hodgman is a summer resident of Watersmeet, Mich., and a member of Artistree Gallery. For more information, call Wendy at (715) 5473950 or 547-5361.

Sayner, Wis. 715-542-2020 The Plum Lake Library Book Club will hold its monthly meeting Monday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. in the library. This months book is West With the Night by Beryl Markham.
