Il paese fu interamente ricostruito a pochi chilometri di distanza dando vita al museo en plain air pi grande del mondo. Numerosi artisti contribuirono, infatti, alla ricostruzione punteggiando il paesaggio con sculture e architetture ardite che si possono ammirare passeggiando per le vie. Anche i ruderi del terremoto furono trasformati in opera d'arte da Alberto Burri che, ricoprendoli con una colata di cemento, ne fece un enorme Cretto. Al Museo Civico di Arte Contemporanea si possono ammirare le opere dei principali artisti che operarono a Gibellina nel periodo della ricostruzione: Accardi,

Consagra, Rotella, Guttuso, Schifano e Sanfilippo, solo per citarne alcuni. Nel periodo estivo, la rassegna delle Orestiadi continua la vocazione avanguardista del luogo con una rassegna di teatro, poesia, arti visive e musica. n 1968 the earthquake of the Belice Valley destroyed Gibellina. landscape with bold sculptures and architecture which can be admired whist walking through the streets. The ruins from the earthquake were also transformed into a work of art by Alberto Burri who, covering them with a cement cast, made an enormous Cretto. In the Civic Museum of Contemporary Art, the works of the main artists who worked in Gibellina during the reconstruction phase can be admired: Accardi, Consagra, Rotella, Guttuso, Schifano and Sanfilippo, to name but a few. During the summer period, the Orestiadi collection continues the avant-garde vocation of the town, with a theatre, poetry, visual arts and music review.

ul fianco scosceso della montagna su cui sorgeva Gibellina Vecchia si dispiega un'enorme coltre di cemento bianco, il Grande Cretto di Alberto Burri: una straordinaria opera d'arte ambientale che come un bianco sudario, ricopre i ruderi della citt. Per la sua collocazione Sud Sud-Est e le vaste proporzioni, risulta ben visibile da lontano e dalle vicine Salaparuta e Poggioreale: l'impressione che suscita amplificata dal singolare contrasto con l'aspro ambiente circostante, a tratti coltivato con filari ordinati di vigneti sulle colline. La nuova Gibellina, una sorta di citt giardino, osservata dall'alto, ricorda il profilo di un'enorme farfalla distesa lungo il nastro della

vicina autostrada Palermo-Mazara del Vallo. Dalla strada statale che conduce a Santa Ninfa, la campagna si mostra in tutto il suo splendore, offrendo dolci e verdeggianti pianure, ampie vallate e rigogliosi complessi boschivi come quello di Monte Finestrelle. n the steep slopes of the mountain on which Gibellina Vecchia rose there is an enormous cast of cement, the Cretto by Alberto Burri, an extraordinary work of environmental art which, like a white shroud, covers the

ruins of the city. Due to its southeast position and its vast proportions, it is visible from afar and from the nearby towns of Salaparuta and Poggioreale: the impression it gives is amplified by the singular contrast of the dry surrounding area with parts cultivated with neat lines of vines on the hills. The new Gibellina, a sort of town-garden, seen from above is reminiscent of a large butterfly lying along the strip of nearby motorway. From the main road which leads to Santa Ninfa, the countryside can be seen in all its splendor offering gentle, green , plains, large valleys and thriving woodlands like that of Mount Finestrelle.

Di Andrea Cascella la Fontana in marmo travertino, che, come tutte le sculture poste lungo le vie, diventata un punto di riferimento per orientarsi nell'impianto urbanistico a farfalla.La candida scultura frontale De Oedipus Rex, Citt di Tebe, elemento scenografico dell'Edipo re rappresentato ai Ruderi di Gibellina di Pietro Consagra che ha anche realizzato Tris e le porte del cimitero e dell'orto botanico. Per le Orestiadi Arnaldo Pomodoro ha progettato numerose macchine sceniche tra cui l'Aratro, per La tragedia di Didone di Christopher Marlowe, che oggi fa da arredo urbano. A Fausto Melotti si devono le sculture a grande scala intitolate Contrappunto, con elementi geometrici isolati e Sequenze, un

insieme di lastre continue su tre diverse giaciture. T Simeti con uri una lastra di travertino, Impronta, sperimenta una modificazione del contesto e dell'habitat, provocando una pausa nello spazio, mentre Salvatore Messina con T ensione lo rende dinamico, spingendolo verso il nuovo e verso il rinnovamento. ibellina nuova is the biggest contemporary outdoor work of art in the world, with an extraordinary collection of works by important artists such as Carla Accardi who created the panels in ceramics Senza titolo - untitled (1987-1988), situated under the colonnade of the town hall, Nino Mustica, creator of a Fontana Fountain, or Mimmo Rotella, creator of the Omaggio a Tommaso Campanella - Homage to Tommaso Campanella. Fausto Melotti created the urban sculptures on a large scale entitled Contrappunto Counterpoint, with isolated geometric elements and Sequenze - Sequences, a union of continuous slabs dug in deeply on three different positions. Turi Simeti with a slab of travertine Impronta - Imprint, (1979) wanted to experiment a modification of the context of the habitat provoking a pause in the space while Salvatore Messina with Tensioni gives it dynamicity, pushing it towards the new and renewal.

l Museo Civico d'Arte Contemporanea di Gibellina ospita quasi duemila opere di circa seicento grandi artisti tra cui Guttuso, Pirandello, Accardi, Sanfilippo, Beuys, Rotella. Vi sono conservati i bozzetti delle opere architettoniche di Gibellina Nuova e del Cretto diAlberto Burri. Unico nel genere il Ciclo della natura, dieci grandi tele di Mario Schifano eseguite dall'artista durante un laboratorio in citt nel 1984. Le Case di Stefano, un antico baglio restaurato, sede del prestigioso Istituto di Alta Cultura Fondazione Orestiadi. Nella casa baronale ospitato il Museo delle T rame Mediterranee che raccoglie oggetti d'arte decorativa, costumi, gioielli, tessuti, ceramiche e oggetti d'arte dei popoli dell'area mediterranea: testimonianza dei segni della trama cheaccomunaleculturerivierasche.Il sistema espositivo fa convivere opere d'arte contemporanea e manufatti di cultura materiale. L'imponente struttura del Granaio della Fondazione accoglie la sezione d'arte contemporanea con le pi significative opere di artisti di tutto il mondo che, negli anni '90, hanno frequentato gliAtelier delle Orestiadi.

La Fondazione dispone della importante Biblioteca Empedocle con pi di 5000 volumi, anche in lingua. It holds, in the baronial house, Museum of Mediterranean Themes which has collections of costumes, jewellery, ceramics, textiles and objects of art of populations and cultures of the Mediterranean, to show the signs and themes which the coastal populations have in common. The exhibition system is unique in the world in that it keeps together works of contemporary art, and manufactured objects of material culture. The imposing structure of the barn holds a collection of contemporary art with important works donated by artists from all over the world who have frequented the laboratories workshops. The foundation has the library Empedocle with more than 5000 volumes.
