UNIDO at a glance
UNIDO was established in 1966 and has 173 Member States The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations, whose mandate is:
to promote and accelerate sustainable industrial development in developing countries and economies in transition; to work towards improving living conditions in the worlds poorest countries by drawing on its combined global resources and expertise

UNIDO has a network of 45 field offices, 41 National Cleaner Production Centre & 11 Investment & Technology Promotion Offices

Thematic focus on RE & EE

Industrial Energy Efficiency
Energy management systems and standards ISO 50001 Energy systems optimization (steam, compressed air, etc.) Industrial benchmarking Low carbon and advanced process technologies Productive uses Industrial applications Biofuels (industrial processing) Solar (ISEC) & Small Hydro (ICSHP), China ICS Trieste (Geothermal and Biomass), Italy ECOWAS RE & EE Centre, Cape Verde ICHET Hydrogen Centre in Turkey

RE in Industrial Applications potential towards 2050

UNIDO study published January 2011 Manufacturing industry 1/3 of global E use Global industrial production x4 by 2050 - 50 EJ/yr Up to 21% of final E-use possible from RE Biomass, solar thermal, heat pumps Bio energy by far largest potential - 37 EJ/yr Solar thermal about 5.6 EJ/yr by 2050

Clear opportunity also for India

Solar thermal systems for process heat Sectors

Half of 2050 potential in food industry
Low & medium t (<80;<250C) commercially available In many industries e.g. dairy UNIDO work in India; Ukraine Break-even in countries with high insulation, e.g. India

Chemical & petrochemical industry

Requires about 11 EJ of heat in 100 - 400C range Modern CST plants can provide this - in principle Expensive (approx. 20% higher than gas; 150% than coal)

Brick-making, ceramics, cement industry

Require 17 EJ of heat, above 1000C Biomass co-combustion common Potential role for solar in pre-drying/heating
