1. Lead in to link the language focus part of the lesson with previous listening and prepare the students for the following task

Procedure
Ask SS if they remember (from the listening task) who the interviewer agreed with (Amanda and Pablo in particular) and disagreed with (Johnny). Ask if they remember any expressions he used to agree/disagree (students in pairs). Ask SS to work in pairs and find in the text of the interviews, the expressions which the interviewer used to agree and disagree. Make it clear that SS dont have to read the whole text but only look for specific examples. Give out recording script (only look at first three dialogues ignore the last one). 30 sec. ICQ: - how many people do you work with? (1) - do you need to read the whole text? (N) - what are you looking for? (how he agreed/disagreed) - where in the text do you think it will be beginning or end of the dialogue? (end) Feedback Now ask SS to work in the same pairs and find from each dialogue (without the last one) 1 example of giving a personal opinion. 1 min. ICQ: - what do you need to find (how to express an opinion) - how many examples do I need? (1 from each dialogue) Feedback (ask pairs that did not speak before).

10 min 2. Language focus to revise and extend SS knowledge of expressions for agreement, disagreement, giving and asking for an opinion.

Lesson Number 3 / Date 9-8-11

Instructions: Look at exercise 4 on p.19. You have different expressions for agreement, disagreement, giving and asking for an opinion. Divide them into these 4 categories. Ill give you each a handout to write this down. If you dont know something write it down at the bottom of the page (point out where). Work on your own first. Youll have 2 min. T gives out handouts and asks not to start yet. ICQ: - do you work on your own first? (y) - what do you do if you dont know where to put the expression? (write it at the bottom box) Time start and countdowns (while T prepared the board for the next task). SS peer checking in groups of 3, encourage SS to check with each other for things they didnt know. Feedback with peer nominations. T clarifies points which are still unclear encouraging SS to deduce the meaning of unknown phrases from the context of the recording script (apart from two obvious ones, all the rest appeared there) and check understanding with CCQ if appropriate. T asks SS to work in pairs and try to mark the stress in the phrases giving the first one (Absolutely) as an example. Tell SS that they will listen to it in a minute to check for answers so they dont worry if they dont know. 2 min. T plays the recording stopping after each phrase, asking SS where they think the stress is, drills and boarding the correct answer. T asks SS to mark the stress on their sheets.
