Takotoranga
Ka pānuitia tētahi tuhituhinga, ā ka whakautu pātai mō taua tuhituhinga. Ko ngā pātai hei aromatawai
māramatanga ki ngā kōrero Māori pākeke: māramatanga whāiti (arā ko ngā kupu ake, me ngā
mokamoka) māramatanga whānui hoki (arā ko ngā ariā matua, me ngā whakapaetanga). E 10-15
katoa ngā pātai, kei roto i ngā tūmahi e toru, e tika ana hei kohikohi taunakitanga i tēnā, i tēnā o ngā
taumata paetae.

Ko ngā tūmomo pātai:


• whakautu pātai i te reo Māori
• whakautu pātai i te reo Pākehā
• whakapākehā i te rerenga kōrero.

Ka meatia ko tēhea te reo whakautu (reo Māori, reo Ingarihi rānei) e hiahiatia ana mō ia pātai. Me
whāia ēnei tohutohu kei whakararu. He whakamātautau pānui, nā tēnā he poto noa iho, kotahi
rerenga pea, te whakautu me tuhia.

Horopaki
Ko te roa o te tuhituhinga e 750-800 pea ngā kupu. Ka tangohia mai i Te Tautoko i Te Wharekura, i
ēra atu momo rauemi pakeke rānei.

Format of the assessment


Candidates read a passage in Māori and answer a series of reading comprehension questions. The
questions are designed to examine the candidates comprehension of advance written text in Māori at
both micro( eg. specific words and details) and macro levels (eg. Overall, meaning and inference).
There are a total of 10-15 questions, arranged within two tasks, that collect evidence for each of the
achievement levels. Evidence from higher-level questions can provide replacement evidence for
lower achievement levels.

Question types will include:


• short answer questions in Māori
• short answer questions in English
• translating given phrases or sentences from the passage into English.

Candidates will be instructed as to the language (Māori, English, or a choice) required for the answer
to each question. Candidates must follow these instructions or they will be disadvantaged. As this is a
reading examination, only short answers of up to one sentence are required.

Content/Context details
The reading comprehension passage will be 750-800 words in length. It will be drawn from Te
Tautoko, Wharekura or other advanced sources.

• Moteatea – waiata aroha and waiata tangi
• Formal oratory – karanga, whaikōrero, proverbs
• Stories told in typical Māori styles

Format of the assessment

Candidates read either sentences or passages in Māori and answer a series of questions. The
questions are designed to examine the candidate’s ability to analyse and understand grammar. All
grammar structures and vocabulary are drawn from levels 1-3 of the Te Reo Māori i roto i te
Marautanga o Aotearoa, Te Pou Taki Kōrero, Te Tāhūhū o te Mātauranga, 1996.
There are a total of 15-20 questions.

Question types may include


• identifying mistakes in a sentence and rewriting it correctly
• negating sentences
• translating given phrases or sentences into English
