Yuriko Akino Dr. Casino ESL 1A 8 May 2003 Lifes Decisions Living an effective life requires skillful decision-making. Any decision one makes today will impact his future. For example, a high school student needs to decide which college he would go to, because of potential limitations or vast opportunities a college may offer. Ones college degree could affect ones future significantly. A persons satisfaction in his job also depends on the choices he has made earlier. An individuals chosen career could

usher in a promising or non-promising job. But once a person ends up in a very good job, it is pretty difficult to change work sites. Yet having secured a promising job puts him in a position of stability and substantial economic base that would enable him to live a productive life. The Beginning What about decisions that people make on a daily basis? There are a variety of decisions in ones life. Some of them may not be as essential as others since they do not have a direct bearing on their future. But still they are considered important because one way or another they help a person the develop skills of decision-making. Lets think about a persons day for instance. In the morning, one needs to decide whether he eats breakfast or not. The

decision causes two possible consequences. If one eats, he will be able to focus on lessons or work. If one does not eat, he will be starving and will not be able to concentrate in class or office. In this way, the consequences are often clear or even predetermined. People should develop the skill to independently make decisions in life. A personal case in point proves how important it is for me to make good decisions. Last summer, I had to decide to come to Seoul. To make this decision right and effective, I had considered the pros and cons of my coming here. One good thing about me coming to Seoul is that I would be with my family. Secondly, I would benefit from getting a good education in English. The negative side of my coming includes leaving my home country and my friends, which is a sad thing to do. After a long period of careful consideration, I thought the positive consequences would provide me an effective life and decided to come to Seoul. Conclusion Clever decision-making is necessary to living a successful life. People are faced with the challenge to choose from a variety of lifes options. Yet they cannot put on apathy or carelessness when the opportunity to decide comes. Through the minor decisions one makes everyday, he is able to develop an important life skill of decision-making. And in the process of skills development, one becomes keener in choosing that which is the best from what is just good or better. For there is really no substitute for making the right choices in life.
