NoVa Plans a Streetcar Revival

Fairfax, Arlington officials plan to open first stretch in 2016
Columbia Pike has always been a key east-west corridor through Northern Virginia, starting in Annandale and ending at the Pentagon in Arlington. But traffic on The Pike is regularly difficult, and some stretches were not seen as aesthetically pleasing. Thats all changing, and faster than you might think. Arlington has been methodically and impressively redeveloping the Pike, without displacing families. And for traffic, it is leading the charge back to the future: streetcars. The last time streetcars ran in Northern Virginia was in the 1940s. Now, Fairfax and Arlington counties are working together to make the first 4.7-mile stretch along the Pike into a streetcar showcase. The two counties have set up their own funding streams for streetcars and will apply for a

Historic Lincoln Theatre May Be Forced to Close

Board members overseeing Washingtons historic Lincoln Theatre on U Street say its uncertain how much longer the theater can stay open without support from the city. Board member Rick Lee says the theater has just $50,000 in cash on hand. But the theaters monthly operating costs are $60,000. The board is appealing to Mayor Vincent Gray to provide funding from the citys surplus tax revenue. (AP)

key federal grant that will provide a large chunk of the initial cost, last estimated at $160 million. The hope is to have the first stretch open in 2016, with a second leg that would run south through Crystal City to the Alexandria line, and then the potential to fan out through the eastern part of Northern Virginia. The streetcars would run most-

ly in the right lane, with embedded tracks and electric wires above, with low floor vehicles for easy access from the curb. There will be designated stops. In addition to the Columbia Pike streetcars, plans for a second leg that would take the route down the length of Crystal City to Four Mile Run and the border with Alexandria are well under way.

Arlington Board Chair Chris Zimmerman said the Pike is following in the footsteps of Shirlington and Clarendon, once-quiet areas of Arlington that benefited from smart planning and easy access that are now booming. Arlington is big enough to do cool stuff, Zimmerman said, and small enough to get it done.

Police: Onions Capitol Tweets, Article Not Credible

The U.S. Capitol Police issued a statement calling conditions at the Capitol normal Thursday in an apparent response to a series of tweets and an article from the satirical website the Onion. It has come to our attention that recent twitter feeds are reporting false information concerning current conditions at the U.S. Capitol. Conditions at the U.S. Capitol are currently normal, read a press release from Sgt. Kimberly Schneider. There is no credibility to these stories or the twitter feeds, Schneiders release read. The U.S. Capitol Police are currently investigating the reporting. A Twitter search indicates a few tweets from the Onion regarding the Capitol on Thursday.
