1 INTRODUCTION
Maliya is predominately a Muslim Village. Electricity is available in most of the villages. However there are number of remote villages which lack the basic needs such as drinking water, road, hospital and primary school. The literacy of the village is 32.8%. There are two Government schools and private high school. The quality of the education is very poor in these schools. Motivation among the children to attend the school is found to be very low and many discontinue their studies. Since the parents are uneducated they are not showing much interest in their childrens education. Girl children are forced to remain at home to look after their young ones when their mothers go for work and boys are compelled to work at their field or in the salt pan fields.
The health conditions of the people are very poor. Most of them are living in the unhygienic surroundings with little access to the health services. Unhygienic living conditions and lack of awareness among the people about their health problems leads to high rates of occurrences of diseases. Malnutrition among the children and women are found to be very high. The
social status of the women is low. Women are socially isolated and are not permitted to go out of the village. They are ignorant about their rights and privileges in the society. Discrimination in the society, lack of education and social awareness prevent the women from leading a dignified life in the society. Earthquake which happened in 2001 caused a vital damage to this village.
