November 15-December 20, 2011
SR1 Residents and organizations donated 31 coats and jackets to this effort last year! We can do it again! Just go through your closet and weed out those gently used but outgrown jackets, that winter coat you NEVER wear, anything extra just taking up space. You may not know who they are, but SOMEONE out there will be grateful for any jacket or coat you give them!

MANAGERS CORNER
Heard the one about why is the spa closed and when will it open? Here is the story.. It appears that when the spa was renovated about three years ago, Management took the initiative to seek to determine what new legal changes were in the wind for your safety and made the changes before they were law. The specific law being referred to is the Virginia Grahame Baker Law. This law was instituted as a result of an individual getting held down in a spa / wading pool by the pump suction from the bottom drain. The management of Spanish Ranch fulfilled the requirements of this law before it was even a law with the assistance of the County of Alameda Department of Environmental Health and submitted the proper paperwork that was required at that time. Fast forward two years and six months later, the required paper work was changed, and the paperwork submitted by Spanish Ranch was unavailable in the Countys files. The spa is now open and the good news is that while the spa was closed the management of Spanish Ranch installed a new high efficiency filter and pump. The filter is a diatomaceous earth filter replacing the old style sand filter. This new filter will filter materials down to less than six microns in size (much smaller than is visible to the human eye). A micron is one millionth of a meter in size. School is back in session. Please use the upmost caution when driving with the children going to and from school. Parking continues to be a challenge here in the park. On street parking and resident parking in visitor parking areas is an area of concern. Please be aware that on street parking is ONLY allowed when loading and unloading passengers and freight into your home. Visitor parking is for VISITORS ONLY and not for your second, third or fourth vehicle. Visitor parking is NOT for your commercial vehicle that you use for work. Your attention to these parking issues is greatly appreciated. Remember, the Rules and Regulations of Spanish Ranch dictate that pets are to be in-house pets and that if they are out of doors, the animal MUST be on a leash. Any enclosures that may be used for the purpose to leave your pet out of doors unattended are not allowed. In order to help us help you, please enclose your check or money order WITH your payment stub that has your name, address and space number. We are seeing more checks and money orders simply dropped into the office mail slot with no identification at all. THANKS!! Emergency TIP: In the event of an area wide catastrophic loss of water pressure, remember, you can use your water heater water for drinking, washing and flushing toilets. There are a few things to keep in mind if this occurs: 1. Turn off or turn down the thermostat to the vacation setting 2. If there is no water pressure for an extended period of time, go to the top of your water heater and close the inlet valve supplying fresh cold water to your hot water heater. This will prevent the possibility of water from being siphoned back into the main line and emptying your hot water heater. The cold water fill pipe extends all the way to the bottom of the tank when it fills. Remember: in the event of a major loss of water pressure that is area wide, the club house pool will be a good source of water for washing and flushing of toilets. Club House Reservations: Remember, we normally are booked up about six to ten weeks in advance. Also, Bingo is generally using the large clubhouse the first Saturday and the last Saturday of each month. If it is your desire to use the BBQ area for a BBQ, you must reserve that area just as if you were reserving the club house. Guillermos Corner: Guillermo is busy working around the small club house rebuilding the damaged awning. Trash and graffiti continues to occupy a great deal of Guillermos time during the morning hours. Guillermo says keep those reports about the non-operational street lights coming. It takes a while to troubleshoot and order parts, but little by little he is getting the list smaller. Cigarette butts around the club house and in the car wash areas are getting to be a real pain. Please pick up your butts and dispose of them properly. Jeff Stoops, Asst SR1 Manager

Exterior changes to Your Home Require a Permit!

A permit is required for most physical changes to your home. The State Department of Housing & Community Develop ment (HCD) requires a permit for exterior changes, such as: awning extensions room additions air conditioner installations storage shed construction porches decks Park managers are required by HCD to sign off on a permit appli cation for exterior items. HCD also requires permits for changing your homes interior as well, but management does not get involved in this area. The management office has plot plan forms required for the permit application. Reported Crime: It was reported to Neighborhood Watch that one of our known drug dealers was arrested in the park and taken away in a police car. The person was then seen two hours later, back in the park. This particular person was supposedly evicted from the park but keeps coming back. NW wonders why management cant seem to keep him out of the park. Managements Report: report from Management No

Minutes of the SR1 Board Meeting 9/1/2011

Meetings of the elected Spanish Ranch I Executive Board are held on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the main clubhouse. ALL residents are welcome to attend!
The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m.. All members were in attendance except for Kathi Calvert and Marvin Daley. Jeanie Schultz was excused. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved. theme of the basket will be Wrapping, which will include materials for all-occasional gift wrapping. Dawn will provide decorative gift boxes, Judy Allen-Rodgers will provide gift tags and Scotch tape. Patty Little and Peggy Nichols will provide scissors and tissue paper. This is a handy gift for people who need gift wrapping for those Christmas gifts all-in-one place! Raffle tickets will be sold at the Fair for $1.00 for one, or 6 tickets for $5.00.

Treasurers Report:
Treasurer Peggy Nichols reported no change in her report from the last meeting. A check was made out to Judy Allen-Rodgers for the total amount of $40.00 to cover the cost of flyer copies for the Crafts Fair. Dawn Plaskon okayed and signed off for it.

Charity Fund Drives:

Tools For Schools drive is over for now and was a big success! Thank you all for donating valuable school needs for the those students less fortunate. The current charity drive is for Community Shelters. Toiletries and personal items are badly needed for Womens Shelters and other charities. You can contact Dawn Plaskon for donation pickup, or bring items to any Saturday Bingo Games. Items to donate are listed in the September el Toro. The next drive will be for coats and jackets for the One Warm Coat program through Hayward CAN. Missing El Toros: There was some confusion as to the location of some boxes of El Toros that were to be distributed in Jeanies absence. They were taken inside one concerned persons house, as they were left in Jeanies carport. Eventually this mystery got solved and the El Toros were properly distributed. Going forward, it was suggested that we have a designated person to co-ordinate the distribution and be in charge in the event that the editor is gone.

N.E.R.T. Disaster Plan Meeting:

There was a very good turnout on the Disaster Planning Meeting in August, with about 40 people in attendance to discuss options of Disaster preparedness for the park. We had a lot of engagement from many residents with helpful suggestions. Dawn took down names for volunteers for various responsibilities. Some people had fire safety experience and others could help as language translators. We had interpreters for Spanish, Vietnamese, and Chinese. Some people had experience in First Aid and ham radio knowledge. Rutherford (Park owner) was asked to provide the Disaster Plan, required by law, to Dawn or Jeanie in advance of this meeting. The document was received the night before and it goes back to 2007. A more recent plan either has not been drawn up, or Rutherford has not notified Management or us. Dawn is looking into further information on this. We hope we can be in agreement with a park-wide disaster plan, working with management and the residents of SR1. Dawn received an e-mail from Rutherford and will send out a file of the information to everyone on the Board.

Halloween Party:
The Halloween Party will be on Saturday, October the 29, unless changed. It will be in the main clubhouse and Stacia Higman, Kathi Calvert, and Pat Smith will be in charge of it. We could use volunteers for setting up, decorating and clean-up. Contact Stacia if you are interested in helping. [Ed note: this event is a no-go as of press time.]

Crafts Fair
Flyers have been distributed to residents about the Crafts Fair in November, with another reminder flyer in midOctober. Dawn will contact the PennySaver paper for an ad. Jeanie has posted the information in the September El Toro, as well. As of this date, Patty Little has received money for 10 tables, with more people reserving tables. We will need volunteers to help set up on Friday, November 11, and early on Saturday, November 12. We will have someone monitor the clubhouse Friday night and make sure it is locked up for those vendors that want to set up their tables that night. Barbara Sacks and Clint Dean might be able to volunteer for this. We will be doing a raffle at the Crafts Fair for a Gift Basket, made up by members of the Association. The

Spectrum Meals:
As of now, the Spectrum Meal Program has been cancelled due to lack of volunteers. The person in charge, Tara has not returned Denises phone calls, so with no forward momentum on this, the program has been cancelled. It is a real shame, as this is a most worthwhile program for seniors and others in the park. There was no other issues and the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 pm. Respectfully submitted, Judy Allen-Rodgers in the absence of the secretary
