Outdoor and Adventurous Activities [Orienteering]

Level 1: I can
• Recognise features on an orienteering map and can tell how they relate to the
ground.
• Orientate the map to show the direction I am looking.
• Understand what is suitable clothing for orienteering and why.

Level 2: I can also


• Recognise most symbols on an orienteering map.
• Navigate along a single path or track.
• Use a ‘thumbing’ technique when using a map.
• Understand what a line feature is.

Level 3: I can also


• Use features on the map to move from path to paths.
• Select a correct route to arrive at a control on a basic orienteering course.
• Find a few of the controls on a basic orienteering course.
• Understand the basics of using a compass.
• Understand the basics of using double pacing.

Level 4: I can also


• Work out distances using the map.
• Find most of the controls on a basic orienteering course quite quickly, selecting
the correct route.
• Use pacing to help find controls.
• Use a compass with some accuracy on a basic orienteering course.

Level 5: I can also


• Find most of the controls on a basic orienteering course in a reasonably fast
time, selecting the correct route.
• Use pacing accurately to find controls.
• Find a number of controls using orienteering techniques on a more demanding
course.
• Use a compass very accurately on a basic orienteering course.

Level 6: I can also


• Understand what the appropriate clothing is for more advanced orienteering
courses and why.
• Find all of the controls on a basic orienteering course in a fast time, selecting
the correct routes.
• Find the majority of orienteering controls using orienteering techniques on a
more demanding course.
• Understand when and how to use attack points and aiming off techniques.
• Measure distances and use pacing to find controls.
• Use fine orienteering techniques over short distances.
Level 7: I can also
• Find all of the controls using orienteering techniques on a more demanding
course quite quickly.
• Use attack points to find controls.
• Use the technique of aiming off to find controls.
• Estimate distances well using the map as a guide.
• Understand what equipment is required for more advanced orienteering courses
and why.
• Understand what to do in the case of an emergency.

Level 8: I can also


• Work as an individual on a more demanding orienteering course finding most of
the controls.
• Work as an individual on an advanced orienteering course finding some of the
controls in a competition.
• Understand contours and estimate distance with accuracy.
• Understand when to use handrails and line features and when to employ attack
points.
• Understand when to use catching features.
• Understand how to orientate the map using a compass.

Level 9: I can also


• Work as an individual on an advanced orienteering course finding all of the
controls quite quickly.
• Navigate through different types of terrain.
• Use a compass and pacing at the correct time.
• Use handrails, attack points and catching features with accuracy.
• Complete rough orienteering over long legs.
• Understand competitive techniques.
• Understand the colour coding system of orienteering courses.

Level 10: I can also


• Work as an individual on an advanced orienteering course finding all of the
controls very quickly.
• Navigate well through a variety of different types of terrain.
• Use handrails, attack points, compass bearings, pacing and catching features
very accurately.
• Employ competitive techniques in competition.
