ENGR3030U Computer-Aided Design Lab Manual 2 Steps:

1. Open Car Body part file (Please download it from WebCT).

Choose STARTMODELING Adjust the shading

Figure 3 Shading

2. Using the Through Curves macro, create the front bumper surface
Insert Mesh Surface Through curves Select your first spine Add New Set Click the second spine If your Surface is correct it will look like Figure 4 if your orange vectors are pointing in opposite directions (Figure 5), click the section you want on the list and reverse the direction

Figure 4 Correct Mesh Surface

Figure 5 Incorrect, reverse direction

Continue adding new sets until the bumper is complete

Figure 6 Through Curves Front bumper

3. With the Through Curves macro, make the rest of the surfaces shown below.

Figure 7 Five Through Curves surfaces

4. The Bridge macro can be used to attach two pre-existing surfaces

To connect the front bumper and side surface: Go to Insert Detail Feature Bridge

NOTE: if you cannot find Bridge command go to Help Command Finder right click the macro and Show on Menu (This will add it to the drop down menu) Figure 8 Show on Menu

Change continuity type to Curvature Make sure that both surfaces are Primary Faces Click the bottom corners of the surfaces to yield accurate directional vectors

Figure 9 Bridge the front For the rear bumper Click the two spines to get the correct direction Then press apply And Drag (using the top view) Left click the surface and hold, while dragging the mouse up to tuck the haunches of the surface in

Figure 10 Bridge the rear Lastly, bridge the Hood and Trunk surfaces

Figure 11 Bridge drag

Figure 12 Bridge the center

5. Section Surface will be used to blend the front bumper to the hood
Insert Mesh Surface Sections Sections Fillet Rho Select start guide as the bumper edge End guide as hood edge start face to the surface with the start edge end face to surface with end edge set Rho to .45 the Spine curve to follow is the Y-axis line at origin

Figure 13 Hood Section Surface apply the same method to create the rear trunk, set Rho to 0.75

Figure 14 Trunk Section Surface to create the side patch, continue with the Fillet- Rho macro notice that there are multiple segments needed to make up the guides and faces also, the Spine Curve is now the X-Axis set Rho to 0.5

Figure 15 Side Section Surface

6. Tail light patch with Through Curves mesh

Insert Mesh Surface Through Curves Mesh Choose the tip of the green spline to set a point as Primary Curve 1 Add new set Set to bottom edge as Primary Curve 2 cross curves 1 and 2 are the two vertical edges Under continuity select the two faces attached to the cross curves

Figure 16 Through Curves Mesh for taillight

7. Reuse Through Curves and Bridge to create windshields and roof

Insert Mesh Surface Through Curves Create windsheids

Figure 17 with windshields Go to Insert Detail Feature Bridge Make roof

Figure 18 Bridge for roof

8. Creating the side surface

First create a Ruled surface between the two splines sticking out of the tail light Insert Mesh Surface Ruled

Figure 19 Ruled surface

Next Insert Mesh Surface Sections Sections Fillet Bridge The macro will work similar to the other section surface we used to create the hood and trunk Choose the start guide as the roof edge End guide as the top edge of the surface strip we just made Choose start face as the roof, and end face as the ruled sheet

Figure 20 Start and end guides for Fillet Bridge Adjust the depth to 30 to round the surface near the roof line NOTE: you may need to reverse the direction of the roof face if the surface is concaved

Figure 21 front view to show convex shape

9. Removal of excess surface

Right click and hide the ruled sheet Insert Trim Trim Body Choose the overhang as Body 1 Select the taillight as the tool face Reverse direction if needed

Figure 22 Trim excess sheet

10. Mirror the features created

Create a datum plane in the XC-ZC plane Insert Associative Copy Mirror Body Select the whole side of the car to be mirrored for body Select the plane just created as the mirror plane
