INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is a vehicle offered by mutual funds to help
you save regularly. It is just like a recurring deposit with the post office or bank
where you put in a small amount every month. The difference here is that the
amount is invested in a mutual fund.
The minimum amount to be invested can be as small as Rs 100 and the frequency
of investment is usually monthly or quarterly.
An SIP allows you to take part in the stock market without trying to second-guess
its movements.
An SIP means you commit yourself to investing a fixed amount every month. Let's
say it is Rs 1,000. When the NAV is high, you will get fewer units. When it drops,
you will get more units. { NAV : Net Asset Value , or the price of one unit of a
fund. Can be computed as follows : NAV = [ market value of all the investments
in the fund + current assets + deposits - liabilities ] divided by the number of units
outstanding.}

SIP SCORE

It makes you disciplined in your savings. Every month you are forced to keep
aside a fixed amount. This could either be debited directly from your account or
you could give the mutual fund post-dated cheques.
As you see above, it helps you make money over the long term. Since you get
more units when the NAV drops and fewer when it rises, the cost averages out
over time. So you tide over all the ups and downs of the market without any
drastic losses.
Also, a number of mutual funds do not charge an entry load if you opt for an SIP.
This fee is a percentage of the amount you are investing. And if you do not exit
(sell your units) within a year of buying the units, you do not have to pay an exit
load (same as an entry load, except this is charged when you sell your units).
If, however, you do sell your units within a year, you would be charged an exit
load. So it pays to stay invested for the long-run.
The best way to enter a mutual fund is via an SIP. But to get the benefit of an SIP,
think of at least a three-year time frame when you won't touch your money.
Of course you would lose money if your units lost value over time.
There are two ways in which you can invest in a mutual fund.
1. A one-time outright payment
If you invest directly in the fund, you just hand over the cheque and you get your
fund units depending on the value of the units on that particular day.

Let's say you want to invest Rs 10,000. All you have to do is approach the fund
and buy units worth Rs 10,000. There will be two factors determining how many
units you get.
Entry load
This is the fee you pay on the amount you invest. Let's say the entry load is 2%.
Two percent on Rs 10,000* would Rs 200. Now, you have just Rs 9,800 to invest.
NAV
The Net Asset Value is the price of a unit of a fund. Let's say that the NAV on the
day you invest is Rs 30.
So you will get 326.67 units (Rs 9800 / 30).
2. Periodic investments
This is referred to as a SIP.
That means that, every month, you commit to investing, say, Rs 1,000 in your
fund. At the end of a year, you would have invested Rs 12,000 in your fund.
Let's say the NAV on the day you invest in the first month is Rs 20; you will get
50 units.
The next month, the NAV is Rs 25. You will get 40 units.
The following month, the NAV is Rs 18. You will get 55.56 units.
So, after three months, you would have 145.56 units. On an average, you would
have paid around Rs 21 per unit. This is because, when the NAV is high, you get
fewer units per Rs 1,000. When the NAV falls, you get more units per Rs 1,000.

How to invest in a mutual fund

Load in Funds
An exit load is a fee you pay the fund when you sell the units, just like the entry
load is a fee you pay when you buy the units.
Initially, funds never charged an entry load on SIPs. Now, however, a number of
them do.
You will also have the check if there is an exit load. Generally, though, there is
none. Also, if there is an entry load, an exit load will not be charged.
An exit load may be charged if you stop the SIP mid-way. Let's say you have a
one-year SIP but discontinue after five months, then an exit load will be levied.
These conditions will wary between mutual funds.
MINIMUM INVESTMENT AMOUNT IN SIP
If you do a one time investment, the minimum amount that you have to invest is
Rs 5,000.
If you invest via an SIP, the amount drops. Each fund has their own minimum
amount. Some may keep it at least Rs 500 per month, others may keep it as Rs
1,000.
Cool funds for a hot market
INVESTMENT PERIOD AND TIME TO INVEST
It would depend on the fund.
Some insist the SIP must be done every month. Others give you the option of
investing once in three months or once in six months.
They also give fixed dates. So you will get the option of various dates and you will
have to choose one. Let's say you are presented with these dates: 1, 10, 20 or 30.
You can pick any one date.
5

If you pick the 10th of the month, then on that day, the amount you have decided
to invest in the fund has to be credited to your mutual fund.
METHOD OF PAYMENT
You can opt for the Electronic Clearance Service from your bank; this means the
mutual fund will, as per your instructions, debit a certain amount from your
account every month.
Let's say you have a SIP of Rs 1,000 every month and you have chosen to invest in
it on the 10th of every month. Under this option, you can instruct your mutual
fund to directly debit your bank account of Rs 1,000 on the due date.
If you don't have the required money in your account, then for that month, no units
will be allocated to you. But, if this continues periodically, the mutual fund will
discontinue the SIP. You need to check with each mutual fund what their
parameters are.
Alternately, you can give cheques to your mutual fund. In this case, they may ask
for five Post Dated Cheques upfront with your first investment.
Since these cheques are dated ahead of time, they cannot be processed till the date
indicated.
The importance of choosing the right funds
PERIOD OF SIP
Yes. You will have to state whether you want it for a year or two years, etc. If,
during the course of this period, you realise you cannot continue with the SIP, all
you have to do is inform the fund 15 days prior to the payout.

The SIP will be discontinued. You can continue to keep your money with the fund
and withdraw it when you want.
FUNDS WHICH ARE SIP
No. Liquid funds, cash funds and floating rate debt funds do not offer an SIP.
These are funds that invest in very short-term fixed-return investments. Floating
rate debt funds invest in fixed return investments where the interest rate moves in
tandem with interest rates in the economy (just like a floating rate home loan).
All types of equity funds (funds that invest in the shares of companies), debt funds
(funds that invest in fixed-return investments) and balanced funds (funds that
invest in both) offer a SIP.
TAX IMPLICATIONS
Let's say you have invested in the SIP option of a diversified equity fund.
If you sell the units after a year of buying, you pay no capital gains tax. If you sell
if before a year, you pay capital gains tax of 10%.
Let's say you invest through a SIP for 12 months: January to December 2009.
Now, in February 2010, you want to sell some units.
CAPITAL GAINS TAX IN MUTUAL FUNDS
The system of first-in, first-out applies here. So, the amount you invest in January
2009 and the units you bought with that money, will be regarded as the units you
sell in February 2010.
For tax purposes, the units that you sell first will be considered as the first units
bought.

HOW WILL AN SIP HELP?

When you buy the units of a fund, you may do so when the NAV is really high.
For instance, let's say you bought the units of a fund when the bull run was at its
peak, leading to a high NAV.
If the market dips after that, the value of your investments falls and you may have
to wait for a long while to make a return on your investment. But, if you invest via
a SIP, you do not commit the error of buying units when the market is at its peak.
Since you are buying small amounts continuously, your investment will average
out over a period of time.
You will end up buying some units at a high cost and some units a lower price.
Over time, your chances of making a profit are much higher when compared to an
one-time investment.

BENEFITS OF SYSTEMATIC INVESTMENT PLAN

Power of compounding: The power of compounding underlines the essence
of making money work if only invested at an early age. The longer one
delays in investing, the greater the financial burden to meet desired goals.
Saving a small sum of money regularly at an early age makes money work
with greater power of compounding with significant impact on wealth
accumulation.
Rupee cost averaging: Timing the market consistency is a difficult task.
Rupee cost averaging is an automatic market timing mechanism that
eliminates the need to time one's investments. Here one need not worry
about where share prices or interest are headed as investment of a regular
sum is done at regular intervals; with fewer units being bought in a
declining market and more units in a rising market. Although SIP does not
guarantee profit, it can go a long way in minimizing the effects of investing
in volatile markets.
Convenience: SIP can be operated by simply providing post dated cheques
with the completed enrolment form or give ECS instructions. The cheques
can be banked on the specified dates and the units credited into the
investor's account. The SIP facility is available in the Principal Income
Fund, Monthly Income Plan, Child Benefit Fund, Balanced Fund, Index
Fund, Growth Fund, Equity fund and Tax Savings Fund.

SIP features :
Disciplined investing is vital to earning good returns over a longer time frame.
Investors are saved the bother of identifying the ideal entry and exit points from
volatile markets. SIP options such as equity, debt and balanced schemes offer a
range of investment plans. While there is no entry load on SIP, investors face an
exit load if the units are redeemed within a stipulated time frame. The success of
your SIP hinges on the performance of your selected scheme.

MUTUAL FUND CONCEPT

A Mutual Fund is a trust that pools the savings of a number of investors who share
a common financial goal. The money thus collected is then invested in capital
market instruments such as shares, debentures and other securities. The income
earned through these investments and the capital appreciation realized are shared
by its unit holders in proportion to the number of units owned by them. Thus a
Mutual Fund is the most suitable investment for the common man as it offers an
opportunity to invest in a diversified, professionally managed basket of securities
at a relatively low cost. The flow chart below describes broadly the working of a
mutual fund:

FREQUENTLY USED TERMINOLOGY

Net Asset Value (NAV)
Net Asset Value is the market value of the assets of the scheme minus its
liabilities. The per unit NAV is the net asset value of the scheme divided by
the number of units outstanding on the Valuation Date.
Sale Price
Is the price you pay when you invest in a scheme. Also called Offer Price.
It may include a sales load.
Repurchase Price
Is the price at which a close-ended scheme repurchases its units and it may
include a back-end load. This is also called Bid Price.
Redemption Price
Is the price at which open-ended schemes repurchase their units and closeended schemes redeem their units on maturity. Such prices are NAV
related.
Sales Load
Is a charge collected by a scheme when it sells the units. Also called,
Front-end load. Schemes that do not charge a load are called No Load
schemes.
Repurchase or Back-end Load
Is a charge collected by a scheme when it buys back the units from the unit
holders.

13

Schemes according to Maturity Period:

A mutual fund scheme can be classified into open-ended scheme or close-ended
scheme depending on its maturity period.
An open-ended fund or scheme is one that is available for subscription and
repurchase on a continuous basis. These schemes do not have a fixed maturity
period. Investors can conveniently buy and sell units at Net Asset Value (NAV)
related prices which are declared on a daily basis. The key feature of open-end
schemes is liquidity.
A close-ended fund or scheme has a stipulated maturity period e.g. 5-7 years. The
fund is open for subscription only during a specified period at the time of launch
of the scheme. Investors can invest in the scheme at the time of the initial public
issue and thereafter they can buy or sell the units of the scheme on the stock
exchanges where the units are listed. In order to provide an exit route to the
investors, some close-ended funds give an option of selling back the units to the
mutual fund through periodic repurchase at NAV related prices. SEBI Regulations
stipulate that at least one of the two exit routes is provided to the investor i.e.
either repurchase facility or through listing on stock exchanges. These mutual
funds schemes disclose NAV generally on weekly basis.

TYPES OF MUTUAL FUND SCHEMES

Wide variety of Mutual Fund Schemes exist to cater to the needs such as financial
position, risk tolerance and return expectations etc. The table below gives an
overview into the existing types of schemes in the Industry.

Schemes according to Investment Objective:

A scheme can also be classified as growth scheme, income scheme, or balanced
scheme considering its investment objective. Such schemes may be open-ended or
close-ended schemes as described earlier. Such schemes may be classified mainly
as follows:
Growth / Equity Oriented Scheme
The aim of growth funds is to provide capital appreciation over the medium to
long- term. Such schemes normally invest a major part of their corpus in equities.

15

Such funds have comparatively high risks. These schemes provide different
options to the investors like dividend option, capital appreciation, etc. and the
investors may choose an option depending on their preferences. The investors
must indicate the option in the application form. The mutual funds also allow the
investors to change the options at a later date. Growth schemes are good for
investors having a long-term outlook seeking appreciation over a period of time.
Income / Debt Oriented Scheme
The aim of income funds is to provide regular and steady income to investors.
Such schemes generally invest in fixed income securities such as bonds, corporate
debentures, Government securities and money market instruments. Such funds are
less risky compared to equity schemes. These funds are not affected because of
fluctuations in equity markets. However, opportunities of capital appreciation are
also limited in such funds. The NAVs of such funds are affected because of
change in interest rates in the country. If the interest rates fall, NAVs of such
funds are likely to increase in the short run and vice versa. However, long term
investors may not bother about these fluctuations.
Balanced Fund
The aim of balanced funds is to provide both growth and regular income as such
schemes invest both in equities and fixed income securities in the proportion
indicated in their offer documents. These are appropriate for investors looking for
moderate growth. They generally invest 40-60% in equity and debt instruments.
These funds are also affected because of fluctuations in share prices in the stock
markets. However, NAVs of such funds are likely to be less volatile compared to
pure equity funds.

16

Money Market or Liquid Fund

These funds are also income funds and their aim is to provide easy liquidity,
preservation of capital and moderate income. These schemes invest exclusively in
safer short-term instruments such as treasury bills, certificates of deposit,
commercial paper and inter-bank call money, government securities, etc. Returns
on these schemes fluctuate much less compared to other funds. These funds are
appropriate for corporate and individual investors as a means to park their surplus
funds for short periods.
Gilt Fund
These funds invest exclusively in government securities. Government securities
have no default risk. NAVs of these schemes also fluctuate due to change in
interest rates and other economic factors as is the case with income or debt
oriented schemes.
Index Funds
Index Funds replicate the portfolio of a particular index such as the BSE Sensitive
index, S&P NSE 50 index (Nifty), etc these schemes invest in the securities in the
same weightage comprising of an index. NAVs of such schemes would rise or fall
in accordance with the rise or fall in the index, though not exactly by the same
percentage due to some factors known as "tracking error" in technical terms.
Necessary disclosures in this regard are made in the offer document of the mutual
fund scheme. There are also exchange traded index funds launched by the mutual
funds which are traded on the stock exchanges.
What are sector specific funds/schemes?
These are the funds/schemes which invest in the securities of only those sectors or
industries as specified in the offer documents. e.g. Pharmaceuticals, Software, Fast
Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), Petroleum stocks, etc. The returns in these
funds are dependent on the performance of the respective sectors/industries. While
17

these funds may give higher returns, they are more risky compared to diversified
funds. Investors need to keep a watch on the performance of those
sectors/industries and must exit at an appropriate time. They may also seek advice
of an expert.

The investments of these schemes will predominantly be in the stock
markets and endeavor will be to provide investors the opportunity to benefit

capacities and are willing to think long term. Equity Funds include

RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY

33

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The word research methodology comes from the word advance learners
dictionary meaning of research as a careful investigation or inquiry specially
through search for new facts in any branch of knowledge for example some
authors have defined research methodology as systematized effort to gain new
knowledge.

Research Methodology can consider research as movement, a movement from the

known to the unknown. The term Research methodology is an academic activity
and as such the term should be used in technical sense. According to Clifford
Woody research comprises defining and redefining problems, formulating
hypothesis or suggested solutions, collecting, organizing and evaluating data,
making deduction and reaching conclusions and then testing of the conclusion to
determine whether they fit the in the formulating hypothesis.

Research is thus an original contribution to the existing stock of knowledge

Making for its advancement it is the pursuit of the truth with the help of the study,
observations, comparison and experiment.

34

TYPES OF RESEARCH
The various types of research are :

Descriptive : Descriptive Research

includes survey and fact finding

enquiries of different kinds. The major purpose of descriptive research is

description of the state of affairs as it exists at present. In social science and
business research we quite often use the term Ex-Post Factor research for
descriptive research studies.

Analytical Research : According to analytical research the researcher has

to use facts or information already available and analyse these to make a
critical evaluation of the material.

Applied Research : Aims at findings a solution for an immediate problem

facing a society or an industrial/business organisation.

Fundamental Research : Aims at mainly concerned with generalization

and with the formulation of a theory.

Quantitative Research : Quantitative Research is based on the

measurement of quality or amount. It is applicable to Phenomena that can
be expressed in terms of quality.

Qualitative Research : Qualitative Research is concerned on the

measurement qualitative phenomenon i.e. relating to or involving quality or
kind. For instant when we are interested in investigating the reasons for
human behaviour.

The study conducted is a conclusive descriptive statistical study. Conclusive

because after conducting the study the researcher comes to a decision which is
precise and rational.

35

TOOLS OF ANALYSIS
To know the response. I have used the questionnaire method in sample survey. If
one wishes to find what people think or know, the logical procedure is to ask
them. This has led researchers to use the questionnaire technique for collecting
data more than any other method.
In this method questionnaire were distributed to the respondents and they were
asked to answer questions in the questionnaire. The questionnaires were structured
non-disguised questionnaire because the questions, which the questionnaire
contained, were arranged in a specific order besides every question asked were
logical for the study, no question can be termed as irrelevant.
The questionnaire, were non-disguised because the questionnaire were constructed
so that the objective is clear to the respondent. The respondents were aware of the
objective. They knew why they were asked to fill the questionnaire.

36

DATA COLLECTION
PRIMARY DATA SOURCES

Through interaction with investors

SECONDARY DATA SOURCES:

Through internet, various official site of AMCs

Through pamphlets and brochures of the companies.

Journals & Magazine

Source of Data for this project primary & secondary. In reference to the theoretical
concept as well as for information are collected through secondary sources from
paper published material i.e. newspaper, journal and magazine & from printed
electronic media i.e. internet websites. The primary data was collected through
questionnaire filled from the respondents.

37

SAMPLE SIZE

CONCLUSION
&
SUGGESTIONS

87

CONCLUSIONS
Systematic Investment Plan is a service option that allows investors to invest on a
regular schedule, usually through bank account deductions.
It was found that systematic investment plan give less return as compared to One
Time Investment plans. It was found that SBI Mutual Funds are giving better
returns as compared to Escort Mutual Funds.
It was also observed that due to market movements SBI and Escort Mutual funds
have not performed well.
Investors have also rated SBI better in terms of returns, schemes and risk as
compared to Escort Mutual Funds.

88

SUGGESTIONS
Analysis of schemes must be done before investing.
If the investors dont have enough money to invest in one time
investment plan they must invest systematically as money gives good
returns.
Systematic investment must be promoted by the AMCs.
Industry as whole should try to boast up the investor's confidence by
not repeating mistakes made in past.
It should try to attract more & more retail investors, who are the
backbone & provide stability & growth of the mutual fund industry.
Ethical challenges should be addressed more strategically.
Finally my sincere advice to investors is that before just blindly
investing investor should try to identify funds, evaluate past
performance, look for consistency , diversify, monitor & review.
