Element Management Craft Terminal

With the extensive introduction of SDH and WDM in the transport network, centralized and integrated network management is mandatory for Network Operators to realize the potential cost savings and required Quality of Service. Based on extensive experience in provisioning of telecommunication networks, Alcatel provides a comprehensive range of Network Management Applications compliant with ITU-T Telecommunication Management Network Principles. The Alcatel OPTINEXTM 1320 CT (Craft Terminal) is an Element Management Application that provides the Network Operator with facilities for the first set-up and continuous field maintenance of SDH and WDM network elements locally or remotely.

Craft Terminal Overview

The 1320 CT (Craft Terminal) is the maintenance terminal for field operation technicians managing Alcatel SDH and WDM Network Elements locally or remotely. Particulary the 1320 CT supports the new OPTINEXTM Multi-Service Nodes (MSN), Multi-Service Gateways (MSG), Optical Network systems (ON), and Microwave Radio Link

systems (MW). It is part of Alcatels network management solution for the operation of SDH/WDM transmission networks. The main purpose of these networks is the transport at 2, 34 and 140 Mbit/s or optical wavelength level using PDH, SDH and WDM lines (e.g. for leased lines, voice and data communication or video distribution). The Element Manager 1353 SH and

the Regional Manager 1354 RM provide a complete end-to-end subnetwork management solution in small, medium sized and large SDH/WDM transmission networks. The Element Management Craft Terminal provides in this scenario the necessary local operation and maintenance functionality using the same platform as the Element Manager 1353 SH.

Main Features
The Craft Terminal for the Alcatel SDH/WDM NEs provides:

Main Tasks of the System:

M

These services include: Management of Applications and system parameters Provisioning of the network element(s) Management of the operating parameters and status of the network element(s)

Configuration Management for handling operational data of the network elements Performance Monitoring to set up, collect, log and display performance data associated with the managed network elements according ITU-T G.826 Security Management to take care of the data integrity and operator access.

local operation and maintenance of the connected network element(s) activate/deactivate the supervision of a network element setting of transmission configuration real-time monitoring of the connected network element(s) for any kind of fault via alarms and for normal operation via event notifications cross-connection management of VC-4, VC-3, VC-2, VC-12 and wavelength level

Cross Connection Management

The cross connection management provides a set of functions to set up cross connections in the network elements and to monitor the actually implemented connections for maintenance purposes. The connection configuration is done in an easy-to-use list based application.

Supported Network Elements

M

The Craft Terminal manages all Q3 Network Elements in the Alcatel Transmission Catalogue (SDH/WDM) In particular, the Alcatel 1641 SX Multiservice Metro Gateway starting with Release 5.3-2, the new Multiservice Node and Gateway and the new Optical Network systems are managed. During 1999, almost every existing SDH/WDM Network Element is switched to the Q3 protocol and managed by the 1320 CT.

Configuration management
The 1320 CT Craft Terminal provides functionalities to set-up, initialise and modify equipment configuration parameters.

Fault Management
The fault management comprises a number of functions, which allow realtime supervision of the status of the managed network resources. Faults are detected and isolated and corrective actions can be taken by the operator.

Security Management
The security management provides a set of functions to protect the system against unauthorised access by users, procedures or other influences. Access rights are based on FADs and NADs (Functional Access Domains / Network Access Domains). The offered FADs allow setting up several operator levels with predefined access rights to applications. The different operator rights can be set according to the relevant operating tasks (e.g. Administrator or simple network Supervisor). The NADs allow partitioning of the network and splitting of the access to the network elements into different operator areas, e.g. according to the geographical responsibility of an operator.

These services include: Display of the current alarms of the network element(s) Alarm filtering, printing and logging Enabling/Disabling of secondary alarms Alarm severity setting

picture at the highest level, going down to block diagram views , thus offering very detailed easy-to-analyse information about the status of the network element. Throughout all presentation layers, consistent alarm information is propagated. For all views and tasks, a context sensitive on-line-help system is provided. This provides the network operator hints and explanations for the different operational situations he is in. In addition, the complete product documentation is accessible via the online help system.

Software-Architecture
The Craft Terminal is fully based on the common Alcatel Management Platform ALMAP. This ensures an open platform, using HP environment (HP OpenView DM, HP-UX). For generic tasks like Alarm Management and Graphical Network Presentation, standard Alcatel components are used. The 1320 CT is the common platform for the different applications coming with the Network Element. It offers common services and ensures a homogeneous look & feel and operating philosophy throughout all Alcatel SDH and WDM Network Elements.

Performance Management
The performance management provides a set of functions to start and stop monitoring activities on physical network resources, and to collect, process and display the available data graphically. The provided data are according to G.826 recommendation for SDH NEs, depending on the capabilities of the network elements. The performance monitoring functions allow setting of performance thresholds for certain resources, generating a Quality of Service alarm if those thresholds are crossed. This gives the operator the opportunity to monitor in detail the individual Service Level Agreements fixed with his customers.

The graphical User Interface of the Craft Terminal is the same as used for the individual network elements on 1353 SH level. Starting from a map display of all managed resources, Ilog Views based screens provide a zoom-in to network element views to get details about notified alarms. The graphical view of the network elements offers a quasi-photographic

The Craft Terminal Architecture is fully based on the Alcatel Network Release 5 concept: For all Q3 network elements, a common Craft Terminal / Element Manager approach is followed. The management application is developed once and as is used then consequently on Craft Terminal and Element Management Level. This ensures a high commonality between CT and EML (same look & feel). The Craft Terminal is based on the ITU G.774 and ETSI-ETS 300-304 Information Model standards.

HP B1xx series workstations which provide a high performance to run the software platform and the management applications especially for usage in fixed offices (e.g. as Remote Craft Terminal). This platform is available for the 1641/64 SX Multiservice Gateway.products

QECC, using flexible IS/ES routing protocols on existing transmission lines.

Migration towards the new Craft Terminal

The transition from non-Information Model systems to Q3-based Information Model systems has been kept as smooth as possible, without restricting the advantages coming with the new technology. For ADM Craft Terminal applications this means that the NT-PC environment will run existing NECTAS based applications as well as new 1320 CT based applications. For DXC Craft Terminal applications, the transition from former UAE-SUN environment to HP B-series Workstations or NT-PCs is performed.

Hardware
Two types of Hardware solutions are offered:
M

Physical connection to the network element(s) is achieved via serial connection, local 10baseT LAN or any other remotized DCN with a minimum bandwidth of 56 kbit/s like X.25. If the Craft Terminal is used to manage several NEs, only one gateway NE has to be connected directly. Communication to the other managed NEs can be achieved via internal

Personal Computers (Notebooks, Desktops) running Microsoft NT especially for mobile Craft Terminal applications (e.g. for Service Technicians).
