Spelling Assignments

Spelling homework activities are listed below. You will be referring to this page each week.
1. Alphabetize Write your spelling words in alphabetical order. 2. Reverse Alphabetize - Write your spelling words in reverse alphabetical order. (Beginning at the end of the alphabet) 3. Define your spelling words - Look up the spelling words in the dictionary. Write the guide words for the page you find the word on, the first definition of the word, and its part of speech. 4. Make each spelling word plural Write the plural form of each of the words listed. 5. Use each spelling word in a sentence Write a sentence for each of the spelling words. The sentences must make sense and include proper punctuation. 6. Use ten spelling words in a story - Use ten of your spelling words in a story. Your story must make sense and use everything weve learned about writing good paragraphs. 7. Write the phonetic spelling of each word Using a dictionary for help, write the phonetic spelling for your spelling words. 8. Break each word into syllables Using a dictionary to check your work, break each of the spelling words into syllables. 9. Patterning - Write three other words that follow the same spelling pattern. 10. Antonyms and synonyms - Write each of the spelling words, next write an antonym (opposite meaning) or synonym (same meaning) next to the spelling word, then label each word pair with an A for antonym or S for synonym. Example: spell/misspell (A) or happy/cheerful (S).

11. Alliteration - Use ten of the spelling words in an alliteration phrase or sentence. 12. Write each word five times The words must be written correctly. 13. Stair Step Write each spelling word one time using the stair step method. 14. Illustrate Select five words to illustrate on an 8 x 11 inch piece of paper. The picture must include the word at the top and a definition at the bottom. 15. Figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification, etc.) Write a poem using a spelling word where you incorporate some aspect of figurative language. 16. Words in words - For each of your spelling words, make as many words as you can. For example, from unbearable you can make: be, bear, ear, a, able, near, etc. 17. Adding my words Choose ten spelling words. Add up the value of each spelling word. Consonants are worth 10 points and vowels are worth 5 points. Find the number value of the words. 18. Bubble Letters Write 10 of the hardest spelling words in bubble letters. You may shade or color each word. 19. Acrostic Poem Choose one of your spelling words. Write an acrostic poem for that word. You must also illustrate your poem. 20. Hidden Words Draw and color a picture. Hide your spelling words inside your picture. Once the assignment is returned, you can have a friend try to locate your words. 21. Word Sort Sort all of your spelling words into 2-5 groups that make sense. Explain your justifications for grouping them as you did. 22. Rhyming Words Select 10 spelling words. Write your spelling words and then 2 other words that rhyme with it. 23. Fancy Letters Write each of your spelling words using fancy letters. Your letters may have curly-qs or dots. Have fun!

24. Upper and Lower First write your spelling words normally. Then rewrite your spelling words. This time write the vowels in lowercase and the consonants in uppercase. 25. Cross Word Puzzle Create a cross word puzzle using 15 of your spelling words. The definition of the words should be used as part of the clue. 26. Vowels and Consonants - Write each of your spelling words. All vowels are to be written in one color and consonants are written in a different color. 27. Doodle Day Take the hardest spelling word of the week and write it on an 8 x 11 piece of paper. Doodle around each letter to create an interesting finished product. 28. Word Stems Using a highlighter, identify all the word stems contained in the spelling words for the week. Clearly identify the meaning of the word stems. Write what you think the meaning of the word would be based on just the word stems. Look up the actual meaning of the word in the dictionary and write it on your paper. Decide if your guess was close to the actual meaning. 29. Pneumonic Device take 5 of the hardest spelling words for the week and create a pneumonic device to help you remember how they are spelled and their meaning. 30. Analogies take 10 of your spelling words and create an analogy. For example: night: moon as day: sun
