    FEDERAL Opposition leader Tony Abbott has waded into the coal seam gas debate, telling media that landowners had a right to say no to CSG companies that wished to explore on their land.
    He told Sydneys 2GB radio on Friday that we cant do anything and mustnt do anything that destroys prime agricultural land. Well, what I dont want to do is sell out the long-term future for the sake of short term gain, he said. While describing it as a very concerning situation, Abbott highlighted the approach of Santos as an example of how CSG companies and landowners could get along, and affirmed his support for the industry, despite his concerns.

    While over the weekend Abbott would not elaborate upon his comments the Greens have jumped on his comments, putting pressure on him to support their moves to ban the practice outright. Queensland's new Greens Senator Larissa Waters bill will use the corporations power in the Constitution to require coal seam gas corporations to get written permission before entering a farmers land, Greens leader Bob Brown said. It is a simple solution to the growing alarm in rural Australia where, on the fertile Darling Downs alone, more than 40,000 drill holes to extract gas are proposed in the coming years. We would like to extend the bill to include open cut coal mines but feel that, at this juncture, we'd be better to confine legislation to the terms set by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott. This morning Abbott poured cold water on any potential cooperation with the Greens, telling reporters in Canberra that the Greens were pursuing a broader agenda. "We won't support the Greens because the Greens are just against mining full stop," he said. "They are particularly against the coal industry that they want to close down." Earlier Abbotts spokesperson told The Australian that the Greens were trying to hijack the debate and handballed the lands rights debate to the states. [He] stands by his recent comments that the coalition supports a vibrant coalseam gas industry, the spokesperson said. However, expansion of coal-seam gas should be in harmony with the rights of landowners and the protection of prime agricultural land for food production in the years ahead.
