Andrew CE Primary School Nursery Class, Term 1 September 2011 Curriculum Bulletin
Dear Parents/Carers, Welcome to Nursery! I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to the term ahead. We have had a very busy and fun first week together and the new children as well as me have settled very well and started to build relationships with their peers. Your child has been assigned a key worker which enables a close, secure adultchild relationship. The key worker has primary responsibility for gathering in-depth knowledge of your child, based on
observation and for maintaining your childs portfolio. Where possible, your childs key worker will be the person you speak with if you wish to discuss your child or if you have any concerns. To help you remember who your childs key worker is, I have mounted the childrens peg photographs on 3 different colours. If they have a pink background, I am their key worker, a green background it is Miss Williams and blue is Mrs McGranaghan. If you have any questions, please just ask. I look forward to getting to know you and your children much better over the coming weeks and thank you in advance for all your support.

Early Years Foundation Stage: Curriculum focus for the term

Knowledge and Understanding of the World: This topic lends itself beautifully to exploration of the human body and our five senses. We will also be learning about the seasons and looking in depth at the features of Autumn. Physical Development: This term, the fine motor focus is on developing hand eye coordination when using tools and pens as well as independently managing buttons and zips. The gross motor focus will be moving safely within the environment showing an awareness of others. Creative Development: The children will be exploring their creativity through collage and painting, music, dancing, singing and role-play.

Ourselves!
Personal Social Emotional Development: This term, we will be focussing on settling the new children, learning the routines, sharing, independent toileting, making friends and good listening. Communication Language and Literacy: We will be reading a range of fiction and non fiction that focuses on things to do with Ourselves such as books about families, starting school, body parts and the senses. We will be learning to recognise our names and begin to write the letters. In phonics, the children will be learning to distinguish one sound from another in preparation for learning letter sounds in Reception. Problem Solving Reasoning and Numeracy: This term, we will be exploring and creating patterns, using a range of resources and sorting criteria. We will also be securing our understanding and recognition of numbers through daily counting opportunities, rhymes and games.

Important Information!
Please, please, PLEASE name every item of your childs clothing. I have had to name several items of clothing in the last few days and will not accept any responsibility if they are lost. Due to the muddy conditions in the garden, it is advisable for your child to have a pair of named Wellington boots that they keep in the Nursery. We ask for a 1 a week contribution to a cooking fund. This is the only way we can buy ingredients for cooking or baking every week which the children love. If you would rather pay termly, it is 6 for this term. Your child can put the money in the money box in class. .

The Early Years uniform has changed slightly for this academic year. Both boys and girls are to wear jogging bottoms rather than skirts and trousers. This encourages independence when changing and using the toilet. However, if your child already has a skirt/trousers etc, they may continue wearing this until you need to buy new.

Please can your child bring in a water bottle each day. This is to be taken home at the end of the session to be cleaned and refilled for the next day.

We are encouraging the children to bring home a book from the book corner to share with their grown ups at home. They can change this everyday or keep for a few as they wish. Please share this book with your child, talking about the pictures and the story.

We need you!
Please make sure you are on time when dropping your child off at Nursery and when collecting them. It Is very distressing to the children who are left, especially when the are taken to big school to wait with the older children in the late room. We are always appealing for helpers to support us with cooking, sewing and other activities in Nursery as well as to come with us on trips. If you are interested please let a member of the Nursery team know. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate younger siblings.

If your child stays for lunch, they can either have school dinners or bring a packed lunch. If you opt for the latter, please ensure it is in line with the schools healthy eating policy e.g. no crisps, chocolate, sweets or food with a high salt content and only water is permitted for drinking. Fresh homemade lunches are the best. Whether you opt for school dinners or packed lunches, you need to stick with your choice for the term.
