Empathy is emerging as a key ingredient of leadership and can build a strong bond of
trust between a head and his team.
Empathyit's not a word that generally comes up first and foremost when people talk about
leadership. But it should. Empathy is perhaps the most important leadership skill that involves
one's relationship with others. It is the leader's ability to understand the other person's point of
view. Many mistakenly believe that sympathy is the same skill as empathy - it's not.
Empathy is your ability to truly put yourself in the other person's shoes and understand how they
are feeling. It's the ability to understand the impact change can have on someone else, and taking
their feelings into consideration before making a change.
Empathy is a key ingredient of competence in all leadership styles; leaders with empathy are able
to attune to a wide range of emotional signals, letting them sense the felt, but unspoken, emotions
in a person or group. Such leaders listen attentively and grasp people's perspectives.
* All ears -Pay attention to others' body language, to their tone, to the hidden emotions behind
what they are saying to you, and to the context.* Don't butt in - Don't interrupt people. Don't
dismiss their concerns offhand.* Tune in- Pay attention to nonverbal communication. This is the
way that people often communicate what they think or feel.* Put a name - Use people's name.
Also remember the names of people's spouse and children so that you can refer to them by
name. It strikes a chord.
* Be there - When addressing or talking to your subordinates don't check your email, look at your
watch or take phone calls. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel if your boss did that
to you ? * Boost up - Encourage people, especially the quiet ones, when they speak up. Even an
attentive nod can boost rople's confidence. Lavish praise- When you praise someone, spend a
little effort to make your genuine words memorable. Show you care - Show people that you
care. Ask questions about their hobbies, their challenges, their families and their aspirations.
