Our purpose is to: Follow Jesus Together We do this by: Opening our hearts to people and to Christ in worship and fellowship, so that we know God and each other more fully, Opening our minds to deepen our Christian faith, understand our heritage, and think together to solve common problems, and Opening our doors in welcome and hospitality, even as we go out of those doors to invite people into God's church and be in service to all of our neighbors everywhere.

Whenever I go to Annual Conference, I am impressed. I am impressed with the mission and ministry that United Methodist churches in Wisconsin are making happen. Some people told stories of food pantries and clothing closets in many communities, work with education, the health ministry of parish nurses, and the thousands of people served by United Methodist Childrens Services. We were told about the many people still in need from flooding two years ago, and the help that the church was giving to them via a federal grant. We were told about the good work that several United Methodist-related schools are doing, including several colleges started for the education of African-Americans when segregation was still in effect. North Central College in Naperville is a United Methodist school in Naperville, Illinois, and has amazing programs for such a small college. We heard of work that Wisconsin people were doing in Chile, in Eastern Angola, and in Cuba. We heard about the situation of Methodists in Korea, and deepened a connection that our conference has with the Dong Bu Conference in South Korea. We are connected to some amazing mission work around the globe! I hope to be sharing some of this information soon by projecting short videos before worship. Its exciting stuff, and I think youd get excited, too. ~~Jim Through Friday, August 27th, the church office will be open Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The church office will be closed on Mondays.

Mary Mink Smoky Springs 940 S. Enota Dr. Gainesville, GA 30501 Note from Mary Mink: I am now in an assisted living facility. It is huge: three stories, lovely grounds, etc. Havent really counted the occupants, but I guess there are between 65 & 75. I get three meals a day, a studio apartment, and transportation to the doctor, etc. There is a library, chapel and a lively knitting group. I also have a private patio where I am attempting to grow tomatoes. There are also special outings to concerts, fireworks, etc. Love to all and I miss seeing all. ~~Mary Mink

Annual Pork Chop Dinner

The Missions Committee is looking for a volunteer to take charge of the Pork Chop Dinner. This dinner is to raise funds for our missionary, Paul Webster. The dinner is normally held sometime in September. We will have plenty of people willing to help with the dinner, but we need a talented, dedicated person who would be willing to oversee everything. If you are that person, please contact the church office, Eileen Bennett, or Beth Burnard. Thank you!

Happy 60th Anniversary!

Wes & Gloria Karow celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends during Fellowship Time on Sunday, June 27th. We wish them many more happy years together!

Family-Friendly Friday Night Film, July 9th7 p.m.
July and August films will be focused on themes that fit our emphasis for Vacation Bible School. We will be "Going Green" this summer and helping the children learn more about caring for the wonderful world God has given us. We will feature "Jungle Book", a Walt Disney film, this month. This film, according to an article by Dr. Whitley of Cambridge University, is one that has played an important role in educating the public about the environment. In this 1967 film, a ten year old feral child ( Mowgli) who was found and raised by Bagheera the panther needs to return to the world of human beings to escape Shere Khan the tiger. Mowgli demonstrates not just a desire to protect the animal kingdom but to become part of it. Viewers will see and hear messages about the consumption of our natural resources. As always, volunteers for ushers, food servers, set up and clean up are always needed. Come and join this growing family ministry!

Mission Offering for July

Our Mission Offering for July will be for United Methodist Childrens Services, which is a comprehensive, multifaceted social service agency serving the Milwaukee community. The services include a food pantry, the Family Resource Center, the Growing Tree Childrens Center, and the Transitional Living program. UMCS has also taken on an expanded role in their neighborhood by convening the Washington Park Partners organization, which will determine the priorities for the neighborhood in order to build a strong, stable, safe neighborhood. Remember, we are also collecting items throughout the summer for Welcome Kits for families in the Transitional Living program. The box is located in the entryway. ~~Your Missions Committee

True North to be here at both services on July 25.

True North, an excellent acoustic gospel group, will be leading worship at Columbus United Methodist Church on July 25th for both services. If you didn't hear True North the last time they were here, you're in for a treat. They play traditional bluegrass, and more contemporary gospel music. They use mandolin, guitar, upright bass, violin, banjo, penny whistle, and occasionally flute and cello blend to create a unique and appealing sound. They have played in churches, prisons, and special events throughout Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.

Fun with Sewing

For the last couple of months, some of our church women have been getting together on Thursday nights to sew dresses for African girls who live in remote villages. Zanie Rahn suggested this idea after reading an article found in a Nancys Notions brochure. So far about 70 dresses in various sizes have been sewn. Contributors are Zanie Rahn, Mildred Henke, Margret Barnhardt, Della Dartt, Dot Heathman, Carol Balfanz, Beth Burnard, Louise Elske, Dorothy Hake, Kerri Shea, Peggy Goestch and Julie Jensen. We all had a great time and look forward to more opportunities to work together.

The books of the previous five years can be read for credit in the reading program. Sometimes, someone tells us they dont like our books but really we have many good ones and sometimes we need to inform ourselves about things we dont like. Some of our books have even been on the Best Seller listsuch as Three Cups of Tea, The Kite Runner, Amish Grace, and The Shack. We hope youll consider joining us. We meet the last Thursday of the month at 9:30 a.m. at the church library. You dont have to attend to be a reader, but we hope you will! Lorna Will is our chairperson, so speak to her.

If you are interested in an updated directory, please call the church office at 623-3625 and one will be prepared for you!

Discussion in Worship
Many of you felt very positive about the process we used in talking about whether or not we should do a relational covenant. That conversation led to us putting the idea on hold indefinitely, but wanting to continue to explore how we relate to one another as Christians. Some have expressed the desire to have other conversations in worship. If you have a topic you would like us to discuss, see Pastor Jim.

Patsy Takes the Next Step!
Patsy Roe, our Lay Leader and a Certified Candidate for Ministry in the United Methodist Church, will be going to Licensing School July 18-30 in Indiana. Attending Licensing School is a step toward serving as a Licensed Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church. Patsy has already been approved by our own church, studied with a mentor, been approved by the District Committee on Ordained Ministry, and taken some tests. This next step will be a fairly costly one, for materials, housing, food and instruction. If you would like to contribute toward furthering Patsys education, you are invited to drop an envelope in the collection plate or take it to the church office. Congratulations to Patsy, who has been assigned the task of finding preachers for the pulpits of the Shared Covenant Ministry at Lowell, Horicon and Juneau. She will be preaching in those pulpits frequently herself. Since the reward of a job well done is usually another job, we can assume that they like and trust Patsy at the Shared Covenant Ministry!

Child Care for Praise Band

If you would like to give to support the child care that is provided for praise team rehearsals, it would be very helpful. This is a non-budgeted item, and was fully covered by donations last year. This year, the donations have not kept up with the expense.

Evaluation Report Available

A committee has completed its evaluation of our 10:30 service, and the report is available in the church office. The report will be highlighted in worship at a future date.

Special Music
In June, we were delighted to have some extraspecial music. Greg Burnard (son of Dan & Beth) played the prelude and played with Karen on the hymns on June 13. Loren Glasbrenner sang (also on June 13), which is always a treat. Barbara Dick, who is an editor of many United Methodist publications, sang June 20 it was a treat to have her with us. If you would like to share your musical gifts with our congregation, let Karen White know. We would like it at any time, but the summer is especially helpful.

No 10:30 Worship on July 4th

We rarely cancel worship, but we will cancel the 10:30 service on July 4th. By the time that service would normally end, the parade traffic and crowds will have made it hard for some people to get home. So, come at 9 a.m. and go get your spot for the parade!

Rotation Sunday School Summer Sunday School is well under way and going great! Susan Williams and Julie Jensen continue to staff the two and three year old class so that the activities are age and developmentally appropriate for our toddlers. Older students view our summer Bible story videos and have gathering circle together. Special activities to highlight the story are planned throughout the summer. We are setting up a staff schedule to assure consistency for both staff and students.

Safe Sanctuary Training Training is in the final stages of review and policy writing. We look forward to the implementation process. Vacation Bible School I will meet with Christian education committee, Sunday School staff, and all interested people during this month to finalize plans for our August Vacation Bible School. Tentative dates will be August 23, 24, & 25. It will be VBS program 9 until 12 and then noon to six "Afternoon Adventure" for children needing a full day program. Please contact me if you would like to be part of this planning process. We will be using Cokesbury "Going Green" curriculum. This exciting new resource packet includes multi medial opportunities to spark the interest of students and staff. We only purchase parts of the materials that we can reproduce and adapt as needed and budget dictates. You can view this resource on line by mid July. Check it out and maybe you will discover something that you would like to help with!! Thanks for prayers and cards and visits and food and love and care during my surgery. I am getting better each day with some restrictions. I am back in the office most mornings and catching up with the great things to do for our children and youth! Love and blessings to you all. ~~Mary Baker

Taking War Out of Our Words

On October 1 & 2, our church will be hosting a workshop led by Sharon Strand Ellison as an outreach to our community. We have noticed in the past how disagreements have led to polarization in the Columbus Community, and this workshop is designed to help people relate better to one another. Sharon will teach: How to ask questions with less emotional intensity, so that people drop their defenses and speak freely. How to make statements with no hidden agendas, while responding honestly to the actions, attitude, and/or body language of the other. How to set practical limits that protect you and increase the chances that the other person will respond in a positive way.

We will be providing lunch on those days, so servers will be needed. We also hope that many church members will take advantage of this opportunity and attend the workshop. The cost is $75 for Friday only, and $150 for both Friday and Saturday, payable to CUMC. However, no one will be turned away for lack of ability to pay. The hours will be from 9 4:30 on Friday and 8:30 4:30 on Saturday. While there is no specifically religious content to the workshop, the workshop will help us follow Christs call to be peacemakers.
