"Left to their own resources," a member of the 1960 health planning group said, "most Junior Chambers would eventually turn to health projects for community improvement. With a little encouragement, all of them will." This statement points up a prime reason for a health program. Most people and particularly Jaycees have a burning desire to serve. The Jaycee Healthguard Program is an attempt to harness that desire to achieve the best possible results. Resolve now to have your chapter adopt a defined health program to consist of one or more of the ten health phases. A publ ic information project is good. An action campaign is better. Information plus action is best. The key to any successful project in the field of publ ic

The ten health phases were chosen by the national Jaycee Health Advisory Committee, composed of noted doctors and surgeons, not because the doctors thought they would be "fun to do", but because the committee thought that emphasis on these health areas was needed by the nation as a whole. Your job will be to determine needs in your community and adopt a defined program. (California State Jaycees urged chapters to adopt at I.,ast two phoses.) The brochures are divided into the following sections: The Problem; The Jaycee Healthguard Program; How to Get Started; Other Project Ideas; Sources of Additional Information and Material. Under Sources of Information, you wi II find names of organi zation s to wh ich you can wr ite to secure materials to help in your program. Any special problem should be referred to the Community Health and Safety Department of the national Jaycee office. Since many people and organizations are active In the health field, cooperation is a necessary ingredient in any project. Work closely with locol publ ic health officials and the county medical society to insure a successful program.

In our own nati on, the number of person s 45 years of age and older has increased from approximately 13.5 million in 1900 to nearly 50 million in 1960. The number 65 years of age and over has increased from approximately 3 million in 1900 to almost 15 million in 1960. By 1975, the number is expected to reach 21 million. State and community interest in the problems of aging continues to grow, stimulated by the spreading awareness of the rising number of middle-aged and older people and by recognition of the contribution they can make to community and national life.

The Jaycees can fill a vital need in the community by adopting a sound, realistic "Care of the Aged" program. Here's how: 1. Actively promote job opportunities for those older persons who desire gainful employment and are physically and mentally capable of such activity. There are jobs that can be filled by the elderly. There are employers in the community who want the services of older persons. Getting them together can be the job of the Jaycees. 2. Work with the aging person directly. One of the best methods of promoting mental and physical well-being is to show that society Walts them and 'the contributions they can make.
